Agra woman arrested for pushing 9-year-old ‘adopted' daughter into prostitution
The Agra police have arrested a woman for allegedly forcing a 9-year-old girl into prostitution and assaulting her, said officers Monday.
According to the police, the girl approached a man around 4 pm Sunday and asked him to take her to a police station.'She told the man that the woman had adopted her and had been forcing her into prostitution for the last two years,' said Hemant Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Agra (Sadar Bazaar).
Kumar said the police filed an FIR based on the man's complaint, and took the woman into custody. 'She said during interrogation that she adopted the girl two years ago, and since then, she has pushed her into the flesh trade. We are investigating the case further,' said the ACP.
According to the police, the FIR was filed under section 70(2) (rape) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.
When contacted, Kumar told The Indian Express that the woman had 'bought' the child from an acquaintance for Rs 60,000. 'She had not legally adopted her, but she had an affidavit from the person from whom she had taken the kid. Prima facie, it looks like all of them are involved in human trafficking,' said the ACP.
The woman, the police said, would call people at her house to rape the girl. Apart from the woman, the police have booked three men.

Espionage case: YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra's judicial custody extended by two weeks
A court in Hisar on Monday (June 24, 2025) extended the judicial custody by 14 days of social media influencer Jyoti Malhotra arrested last month on the suspicion of espionage. The Hisar Police arrested Malhotra, who ran a YouTube channel 'Travel with JO', on the suspicion of espionage on May 16. Hailing from Hisar, the Youtuber was arrested at the New Aggarsain Extension and booked under provisions of the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Malhotra's lawyer Kumar Mukesh said, "Her judicial remand has been further extended by 14 days and the next date of hearing has been fixed by the court on July 7." The 33-year-old YouTuber appeared before the court through video-conferencing, he said. Earlier on June 9, another court here had rejected her regular bail plea. Police had opposed the bail and argued that the investigation in this case was still going on. After her arrest on May 16, Ms. Malhotra was remanded to five days of police custody by the court. Following the completion of the remand, the court extended the custody by four more days after the police sought to question her further. On May 26, the court remanded her to judicial custody for 14 days, which was further extended later. The Hisar Police previously said no evidence had emerged to indicate Ms. Malhotra had access to any military or defence-related information but claimed she was in contact with some people, aware that they were Pakistani intelligence operatives. Police sources had previously said she was in touch with Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a staffer at the Pakistani High Commission, since November 2023. India expelled Danish on May 13 for allegedly indulging in espionage. Police had last month claimed that Pakistani intelligence operatives were developing Malhotra as an "asset".
