After the ban on ALTT, Ekta Kapoor lashes out in anger, 'Jise bhi iski fikr ho...'

Yesterday, the government took a big step and banned many OTT platforms serving vulgar content, one of which was ALTT. Its earlier name was ALT Balaji, whose co-founders were TV queen Ekta Kapoor and her mother, Shobha Kapoor. Jeetendra's daughter Ekta Kapoor's Alt Balaji has been in controversy many times due to its content. Now, as soon as the government has banned it, Ekta has spoken out on social media. What has Ekta Kapoor said? Soon after the ban on ALTT, Ekta Kapoor issued a statement expressing her anger and distancing herself from this OTT platform. She issued a statement on her Instagram account saying that she has nothing to do with ALTT anymore. She broke ties with it in 2021 itself. Ekta Kapoor's post further said, 'There are reports in the media that ALTT has been banned by the authorities; however, contrary to these reports, Ekta Kapoor and Mrs. Shobha Kapoor are not associated with ALTT in any way and they severed their ties with ALTT in June 2021 itself. Any allegation contrary to the facts stated above is strongly denied and the media is requested to present the correct facts.' While sharing a post, Ekta Kapoor wrote in the caption, 'Jise bhi iski fikr ho.' It is known that a few days ago, Ekta Kapoor had defended the content being served on ALTT in an interview. Which apps have been banned by the government? The government has mandated the shutdown of websites and applications belonging to 25 OTT platforms, such as Ullu, ALTT, and Desiflix, due to the presence of obscene, vulgar, and in certain instances, pornographic material. Among the applications flagged for breaching various regulations are ALTT, ULLU, Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, ShowHit, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mojflix, and Triflicks, according to officials. The ban earlier imposed on House Arrest Previously, the web series House Arrest was removed by Ullu in May following intervention from the ministry. Officials indicated that all 25 platforms were instructed, in September of the previous year, to stop disseminating obscene, vulgar, and in some cases, pornographic content, yet they persisted in doing so. They noted that five platforms, which had been blocked earlier in March 2024, resumed publishing obscene content on new website domains.

Ekta Kapoor issues statement as government bans apps hosting ‘obscene content', says she isn't associated with ALTT

In the wake of the government's ban on 25 OTT platforms, including ALTT and ULLU, for allegedly hosting vulgar and obscene content, Ekta Kapoor issued a clear statement distancing herself and her mother, Shobha Kapoor, from ALTT. Posting on Instagram, Ekta Kapoor emphasised that neither she nor Shobha Kapoor have any current connection to ALTT, having stepped down from the platform's association as far back as June 2021. Addressing media speculation, Ekta Kapoor clarified, 'Media reports have been in circulation about ALTT being disabled by the authorities, however, contrary to such reports, Ms Ekta Kapoor and Mrs Shobha Kapoor are not associated in any capacity whatsoever with ALTT and they had stepped down from their association with ALTT way back in June 2021. Any insinuation contrary to the above facts is strongly denied and media is requested to report the accurate facts.' She further stated, 'Balaji Telefilms Limited is fully compliant of all applicable laws and continues to operate its business with the highest standards of corporate governance,' concluding her statement with the caption, 'To whomsoever it may concern.' In an earlier conversation with Faye D'Souza, Ekta Kapoor reflected on her time running ALTT, formerly known as ALTBalaji, saying she was 'offending a new person every day.' She explained her intention to portray content in a progressive light, sharing, 'Because everyone is telling me that you are making these women wear sarees, it is regressive. I think that it is equally progressive and this is equally progressive. Why not celebrate women in costumes like you celebrate women in sarees?' Officials identified platforms such as Big Shots App, Gulab App, HotX VIP, and Mojflix among those violating legal provisions. The action follows complaints from the National Commission on Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and public concerns raised over the past year. Notifications were issued under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and IT Rules, 2021, to ensure these platforms are inaccessible. Authorities noted the content involved sexual innuendos and explicit scenes lacking any social message or storyline. Despite warnings issued last September to cease publishing such material, several platforms continued violations, prompting the ban. Notably, some had resumed distributing banned content under new domains after previous blocks in March 2024. Earlier this year, ULLU had voluntarily removed the web series House Arrest following ministry intervention.

Government blocks 25 OTT platforms for obscenity

This is a representational AI image (Pic credit: Lexica) NEW DELHI: In a sweeping crackdown on digital obscenity, the ministry of information and broadcasting has directed internet service providers to block public access to 25 OTT platforms, including Ullu, ALTT and Desiflix, for hosting sexually explicit, obscene, and, in some cases, pornographic content. The directive, issued on July 23, also covers 26 websites and 14 mobile applications associated with these platforms. The action follows repeated warnings to these platforms and comes after consultations with the ministries of home affairs, electronics and IT, the department of legal affairs, industry bodies like FICCI and CII, and experts on women and child rights. Sources said the decision was triggered by growing public grievances and the platforms' persistent violation of IT Rules, 2021, and Indian obscenity laws. Platforms like Ullu and ALTT had been flagged by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) in 2024 for content containing sexual innuendo and nudity with little or no narrative context. Ullu had to remove its series House Arrest in May 2025 after govt intervention. A similar crackdown took place in 2024 when 18 OTT platforms, such as Dreams Films, Rabbit, Hunters, and Prime Play, were blocked. In many cases, government officials said, the content violated sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 292 of IPC, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn More - How Watching Videos Can Boost Your Income TheDaddest Undo Former Central Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar, who heads the 'Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation', lauded the govt for banning the applications and websites, calling it a "digital surgical strike". Mahurkar added in a statement, "However, this is only the first battle. A one-time ban is not enough. We need systemic legal and technological reforms to permanently safeguard our cultural values and make Digital India a truly value-based and safe space for our children."

I am still awaiting their reply.' The caption accompanied a video from a show on ULLU streaming platform called 'House Arrest', hosted by Ajaz Khan. The clip, which went viral and sparked widespread criticism, shows Khan asking contestants to show sex positions on camera. Also read: Full list of 25 OTT platforms banned by Indian govt over 'pornographic' content In a follow up post on X, Chaturvedi wrote, 'This is great news. Had been talking about these two apps -Ullu and Alt Balaji in particular for their content, had raised it in the standing committee of Communication and IT. Glad @GoI_MeitY paid heed & did what was needed to be done long time ago!' Chaturvedi was one of the leaders who spearheaded criticism against that show and other such 'vulgar' content on OTT platforms. The show was taken down from the platform in May. Also: How OTT platforms skirted warnings against 'pornographic' content; now ALTT, Ullu, Hulchul among 25 banned Centre bans ULLU, ALTBalaji The Centre has taken strict action against apps and websites allegedly showing vulgar and 'pornographic' content. As many as 25 apps and websites have been banned, including ALTBalaji, ULLU, Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, and Gulab App, official sources said. According to sources in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the government has ordered the blocking of websites and applications associated with 25 OTT platforms over allegations that these platforms were hosting content deemed 'obscene,' 'vulgar,' and, in some instances, 'pornographic.' They added that the action was taken after the content was found to be in "serious violation" of laws in India. The action comes after the OTT platforms apparently ignored or circumvented warnings issued months ago. Sources in the broadcasting ministry said, 'While the platform removes or edits the web series for a temporary period, it either re-uploads or publishes the unedited version after a certain period, thereby attempting to circumvent the warnings.'
