Government blocks 25 OTT platforms for obscenity
NEW DELHI: In a sweeping crackdown on digital obscenity, the ministry of information and broadcasting has directed internet service providers to block public access to 25 OTT platforms, including Ullu, ALTT and Desiflix, for hosting sexually explicit, obscene, and, in some cases, pornographic content.
The directive, issued on July 23, also covers 26 websites and 14 mobile applications associated with these platforms.
The action follows repeated warnings to these platforms and comes after consultations with the ministries of home affairs, electronics and IT, the department of legal affairs, industry bodies like FICCI and CII, and experts on women and child rights. Sources said the decision was triggered by growing public grievances and the platforms' persistent violation of IT Rules, 2021, and Indian obscenity laws.
Platforms like Ullu and ALTT had been flagged by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) in 2024 for content containing sexual innuendo and nudity with little or no narrative context. Ullu had to remove its series House Arrest in May 2025 after govt intervention.
A similar crackdown took place in 2024 when 18 OTT platforms, such as Dreams Films, Rabbit, Hunters, and Prime Play, were blocked.
In many cases, government officials said, the content violated sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 292 of IPC, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

Former Central Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar, who heads the 'Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation', lauded the govt for banning the applications and websites, calling it a "digital surgical strike". "We congratulate the Centre for its courageous first step in this dharma yuddha (righteous war) to protect the soul of our nation. This ban is a victory for every Indian family," he said.
Mahurkar added in a statement, "However, this is only the first battle. A one-time ban is not enough. We need systemic legal and technological reforms to permanently safeguard our cultural values and make Digital India a truly value-based and safe space for our children."

Dr Nicolene Murdoch, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Western Sydney University, said its campus was on course to commence classes by August or September 2026. 'We will be offering Bachelors in Business Administration and in IT to start with. We are expecting atleast 100 students to join us in the inaugural year in these graduate streams.' Infrastructure work has already commenced and the first phase will be ready next year, she said. 'In the future, we are looking at inviting both Indian companies and Australian ones to offer placements for our students,' Murdoch added. Pradhan said, 'Indian ethos lies at the core of NEP. Over the past five years, the government has succeeded in taking NEP 2020 from policy to practice – bringing about a paradigm shift in the education system and reaching classrooms, campuses and communities.' As the nation moved towards the Viksit Bharat 2027, the NEP serves as a national mission guiding the country. Minister of State for Education Jayanth Choudhary read out a speech from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mark the significant occasion. Education ministers from several states took part in the event. Saiyaara box office: Ahaan Panday-Aneet Padda starrer crushes Vicky Kaushal-Rashmika Mandanna's Chhaava - here's how
Saiyaara is still going super strong in Nepal and is expected to rake in more moolah in the coming days read more Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda starrer Saiyaara, which has turned out to be a phenomenon at the Indian box office, has even surprised fans and experts with its blockbuster response in the international circuits. It has turned out to be the highest grosser of 2025 for Bollywood in Nepal with 6.62 Crore NPR gross (4.14 CR INR), beating Housefull 5 — 4.92 crore (3.1 cr INR), Sitare Zameen Par — 3.22 crore (2 cr INR) and even Chhaava — 2.20 crore (1.4 cr INR). STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD It is quite heartening to see a film featuring faces surpassing the business of franchise and big stars in a country due to its emotional storyline and music, which has struck a chord with the audience. _Saiyaara_ is still going super strong in Nepal and is expected to rake in more moolah in the coming days. Despite not going all out with the promotions, Saiyaara garnered unprecedented excitement among the cinegoers. Before the release of the movie, director Mohit Suri spoke about it and told Firstpost, 'I've been inside the studio for the last one month. I have no idea. And unlike the past when people travel from one studio to another, this is everything inhouse at YRF. So I haven't really gone out and met the world outside. Normally, when you are working on other films, you go out for the day; for sound, edit, and VFX. It was different different places. And just hearing it now, it does feel it does feel very redeeming and validating because when I started off this film, I was quite discouraged by a lot of senior people saying that nobody would be interested in a young love story. Because at that time, larger-than-life films were being made and I just thought that my voice would be lost there when everyone was shouting. So I just went and tried to make a film which is very different from what others were doing. And to me, the fact that people are appreciating that the difference that it's standing out means a lot.'
