Billy Bob Thornton on ‘Landman's' overnight ‘international hit' status and how he's ‘afraid' to read reviews
Billy Bob Thornton is still soaking up the overwhelming response to his 'international hit' show Landman, saying he is often 'afraid' to read reviews, but his wife likes to keep tabs on his press and help keep him informed, whether he likes it or not! In an interview with Gold Derby prior to an FYC screening at the Saban Media Center in North Hollywood on Sunday, Thornton, who plays Texas oil landman Tommy Norris, talked about the show's overnight success. We had no idea. So that's always a nice surprise,' he said of Paramount+ drama series, written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, the highly revered Hollywood heavyweight behind the Yellowstone franchise, known for his exceptional writing and roster of complex characters. After Landman premiered in November, Thornton's team would keep him informed of how well it was performing, but Thornton said he would also hear 'a lot from my wife,' Connie Angland, whom he has been married to for a little over ten years. 'I'm afraid to [look],' he admitted. 'She'll look at it, and say, 'There's this article out,' I say, 'Please don't read it to me.' She'll go, 'It's all good.' I say, 'I still don't want to hear it.'' Thornton added, 'A lot of times, it's something that might sound good to somebody else, but you read between the lines and you go, 'I'm not sure. That might have been a kind of left-handed compliment.'' Variety Demi Moore, Ali Larter, Jacob Lofland, and Andy Garcia, Thronton's costar on the streaming series, joined him for the panel (Jon Hamm and Michelle Randolph also headlined the first season). Discussing the star-studded cast, Thornton said that Sheridan 'was pretty good about letting me know who he was looking at for certain parts.' Though Thornton said he didn't contribute to any of those casting decisions ('Taylor knew who he wanted'), he did help recruit his friend Mark Collie to play Sheriff Walt Joeberg. And working with fellow 'veteran' actors Moore and Garcia only enhanced the experience. 'What a pleasure,' he said. 'We've known each other for years.' Thornton said he's known Garcia 'socially' for decades, but this is their first time working together, and he and Moore shared some scenes together over 35 years ago (in Indecent Proposal), later joking during the Q&A that 'she didn't remember me.' 'It was a big scene in the casino,' Moore recalled, describing the set. 'Rolling dice, pool tables, drinking beer … just the things we're still doing,' she joked. Back on the carpet, Garcia (who plays cartel boss Galino) told Gold Derby of Thornton's set feeling like family, 'Actors are like a gypsy troupe,' he explained. And Lofland, who plays Thornton's on-screen son, Cooper Norris, said that the Tennessee native sets a 'calm' tone down in Texas, which 'takes all the nerves out.' Lofland added that the cast hangs out 'just as much off-screen as we do on.' 'We'll always get together and have a drink at the end, talk about the day, talk about what's coming up. So we really are like a family.' Now around two months into filming the second season, with the addition of yet another big name, Sam Elliott, Thornton announced that Season 2 of Landman will be out in November, prompting cheers from the crowd at the 600-seat theatre. The Ballad of Wallis Island
There've been a host of great rom-coms down the years, but good comedies about heartbreak are altogether thinner on the ground. Their ingredients – big laughs and quiet grief – are a tough mix, but when they land, like La La Land, they tend to linger. Welcome, then, to La La Island. Writer-actors Tim Key and Tom Basden's three-hander, set on a remote British isle, have delivered a rare blend of unkempt charm, emotional precision and soulful folk music with this feature-length expansion of their own 2007 short, The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island. Key, best known on screen as Alan Partridge 's befuddled Sidekick Simon and as an award-winning stand-up off it, plays Charles, a jovial but lonely lottery winner who has retreated to this remote idyll to mourn his wife and wear out the LPs of his favourite folk duo, McGwyer Mortimer. Once the 'it' couple on the folk music scene, Herb McGwyer (Basden) and Nell Mortimer (Carey Mulligan) have long since split up – romantically and musically – but for Charles, their music is both the sound of happier times and the perfect articulation of his sadness. It's Indecent Proposal, only with more knitwear and plaintive strumming In the manner of Robert Redford in Indecent Proposal, only with a lot more knitwear and plaintive strumming, he's offered them a suitcase of cash in return for a reunion gig on his island. Only, he sold it to them both as a solo gig. It's a funny, smart premise that pays off in myriad ways. Director James Griffiths, who oversaw the original short, draws perfectly pitched turns from the small cast. Basden is suitably salty as the lovelorn, rumpled and initially conceited Herb, who discovers the deception first and initially recoils in the face of Charles's boundary issues and stream of tactless jokes. 'A cool half million should keep you in guitar strings, you bloody mercenary,' Charles tells him, jabbing him right where it hurts. There's something here in the relationship between art and money – how stacks of cash will test even the most robust principles – but the story really comes alive when Mulligan's Nell arrives with her amiable American husband (Akemnji Ndifornyen) in tow and forces Herb to finally face his past. Anyone who's held a candle to a past love when they've long since moved on will pour one out for the salty singer-songwriter, who deals with his heartache in all the worst ways. In folk terms, he's Dylan, she's Baez and they're well into their toxic, post-Newport phase. The songs, written by Basden, give a wistful voice to a love that once burnt brightly. There's a whimsical romantic subplot involving Sian Clifford's local shopkeeper that sugars some of the tougher truths here. But this musical comedy really sings when it's exploring the vagaries of the human heart.

While it might feel like only yesterday that the thriller hit UK cinemas, you can now enjoy Babygirl from the comfort of your home. Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson star in this workplace power-play as Romy, the driven CEO, and Samuel, the lowly intern, but it's not long before the tables turn and a sordid affair begins. Writer and director Halina Reijn, known for her camp comedy/horror Bodies Bodies Bodies, explores themes of shame and desire, through the relatable contradictions in Romy's personality, making for a more realistic approach to power-switching relationships than the film genre's 1990s predecessors like Basic Instinct and Indecent Proposal. Baby Girl swaps moody candlelight for fluorescent office lighting, and champagne for a glass of milk. No, really.
