Back with a bang! Karun Nair returns to national set up with century for India 'A' against England Lions

Karun Nair celebrated his return to the Indian Test team after a gap of eight years as he notched up a century for India 'A' against England Lions in Canterbury on Friday. In the first of three warm up games ahead of India's Test series against England, the stylish right-handed batsman hit 14 fours as he brought up his century in 155 balls. This is a big statement from the right handed batsman, who is looking to grab one of the top order positions left vacant by the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Put in to bat first, India 'A' opened the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal (24 of 55) and captain Abhimanyu Easwaran (8 of 17). Nair came out to bat at Number 3, in the sixth over, after the captain was dismissed and he stitched a huge partnership with Sarfaraz Khan, who batted at Number 4. The duo put on 181 runs for the third wicket before Khan was out for 92 (119), short of a well-deserved century. The 27-year-old Mumbai batsman played at an innocuous delivery, which was going down leg side, as his bottom edge made contact with the ball. He was brilliantly caught by England Lions captain and wicketkeeper James Rew low to his left. With the Indian Premier League still going on with many of the Test team's top order contenders still on duty for their franchises, Nair has just bumped himself up the queue regarding securing a spot in the Indian starting lineup in the England tour with this century. Ever since the Indian squad for the 5-Test tour of England was announced, there has been a lot of chatter regarding which batters will play across the top order. Veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara had his say, during a recent interview to a broadcaster, on this topic and stated, "The openers who batted in Australia in the BGT (Border-Gavaskar Trophy) series — KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal — should continue. Now talking about No. 3, at this stage we don't know whether Shubman Gill will bat there or drop to No. 4. "Someone like Karun, who has done well in domestic cricket, I think the ideal position for Karun would be No. 4. If Shubman bats at No. 3, then Karun Nair comes in at No. 4," he said. While the likes of Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and new skipper Shubman Gill will most likely occupy three of the top four positions, Nair will have to fend off Easwaran and Gujarat Titans' star Sai Sudharsan for the remaining spot in the top four. A century in the first warm up game will only help Nair's case for a starting spot in the team.

BCCI to announce India's squad for upcoming five-match Test series against England tomorrow

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] May 23 (ANI): The Men's Selection Committee will announce India's squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England starting from June 20 on Saturday in Mumbai, as per a release from BCCI. The Selection Meeting will be followed by a press conference. The Indian cricket team is set to tour England in 2025 for a five-match Test series, part of the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship. The series will take place from June to August 2025, with matches at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London). This will be India's first bilateral series since both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket earlier this month. Prior to the series, there will also be three India 'A' matches against England Lions, the first of which will take place at the Ground in Canterbury on May 30. Abhimanyu Easwaran will lead India 'A' in those matches, with wicketkeeper/batter Dhruv Jurel appointed vice captain. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan will link up with the 'A' squad ahead of the second match. Rohit ended his 11-year-long Test career on May 7 after representing the country in 67 Tests. This left India with a massive leadership hole ahead of the England tour starting in June, which will kickstart their ICC World Test Championship campaign. Rohit made his Test debut against the West Indies in November 2013 and went on to represent India in 67 Tests. He amassed 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, with 12 centuries and 18 fifties. Virat Kohli also announced his retirement from Tests earlier this month, marking an end to a brilliant career spanning 14 years and 123 Tests. Virat's 14-year journey in the whites transformed India into a result-producing machine. He infused aggression and the culture of fitness into a team riddled with youth and experience. In a career that redefined the demands of the game, Virat scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, with 30 centuries and 31 fifties, and finished as India's fourth-highest run-getter in the format. 'I've got to be mindful': Ben Stokes to play injury comeback safe ahead of England Test vs Zimbabwe

Ben Stokes has hinted he will be more cautious with his workload as he looks to make his latest injury comeback stick ahead of a huge nine months for English cricket. Stokes will lead his side out at Trent Bridge on Thursday for the start of the Test summer, with Zimbabwe the opponents for a one-off encounter. Beyond that, though, lies a crucial run of ten Tests that look set to define Stokes's captaincy, with a five-match series against India later this summer and then the Ashes tour to Australia at the end of the year. The 33-year-old has not played competitive cricket since tearing his hamstring on the tour of New Zealand just before Christmas, an injury which required surgery. Stokes also went under the knife after suffering a similar injury last summer and while he says he is ready to bowl in Nottingham this week, admits he will have to box clever if he is to play a full role as an all-rounder later in the summer. 'I've obviously been training a lot over the last two months and got myself back as close as I possibly can to match intensity,' he said. 'But this will be my first game in a while. There is a bit of a gap between how far I can push myself in training and in a game. 'I've done all the work I need to get out there and bowl some overs, but I've got to be mindful of where I am and build myself back up to proper match workload for later on in the summer. I'm not getting any younger.' England's pace attack has a fresh look this week, with Josh Tongue recalled for the first time since the 2023 Ashes and Sam Cook handed a debut. 'I think for him it's going to be a big, big relief that he was able to get back out on the field and now he sees himself walking back out on the field for England again,' Stokes said of Tongue, who has suffered a string of injuries since his breakthrough two summers ago.' Cook has been spoken about in meetings and stuff for a long time because his record speaks for itself but it was all about timing for us. 'I thought it was inevitable and it was just a matter of time when Cook played for England, but the timing was always going to be a key thing for me, in particular.' Meanwhile, Chris Woakes is set to make his comeback for England Lions against India 'A' in the upcoming two-match series, having missed the start of the county season with an ankle problem. Woakes has been named in a 15-man squad that includes brother Farhan and Rehan Ahmed, teenager Rocky Flintoff and Jordan Cox, who was originally named in the Zimbabwe squad before picking up an abdominal Archer misses a planned red-ball return after sustaining a thumb injury at the IPL, but Stokes has not yet ruled out playing against India 'A' himself should he feel the need for more cricket on the back of this week's Test. 'It will just sort of be how I feel at the end of this,' he said. 'If I feel like I need any more game time before we head into India. I can't really say how that's going go at the moment because I've not played yet. 'That'll probably be a late decision depending on how I feel I get through this Test match.'

Explosive Details Of India A Team Selection For England Tour Revealed: "Lot Of Chaos..."

Right-handed batter Karun Nair has made a return to the national reckoning after being included in the Abhimanyu Easwaran-led India 'A' squad for the upcoming tour of England, starting on May 30. India A are scheduled to play two games against England Lions (May 30-June 2 in Canterbury and June 6-9 in Northampton) and one intra-squad match against the senior India Test squad (June 13-16 in Beckenham). While announcing the 18-man squad, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) added that Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan will join the India 'A' squad ahead of the second match against England Lions, once IPL 2025 concludes on June 3. Nair, who scored a triple hundred against England in Chennai in December 2016, scored 863 runs at an average of 53.93 in Vidarbha's Ranji Trophy winning 2024/25 season and became the fourth-highest run-getter of the tournament. He also featured for Northamptonshire in the Division 1 County Championships over the last two seasons - In 14 innings, he scored 736 runs at an average of 56.61, including hitting two centuries and highest score of 202 not out. The performances of Nair and Easwaran will be of huge interest to the Indian team management and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, as they look to fill the huge gaps in the batting order after the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Other Test players included in the India 'A' squad are Dhruv Jurel, who's appointed as the vice-captain of the team, as well as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shardul Thakur, Ishan Kishan, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep, Harshit Rana, and Sarfaraz Khan, who was out of action after picking a rib injury on the 2024/25 tour of Australia. Uncapped players like Manav Suthar, Tanush Kotian, Anshul Kamboj, Tushar Deshpande, and Harsh Dubey – the leading wicket-taker and Player of the Tournament in 2024/25 Ranji Trophy - also find places. Khaleel Ahmed and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who have played white-ball games for India, are also included in the touring party to England. IANS understands that the selection of India 'A' squad has not been an easy task for Agarkar & Co, especially due to IPL 2025 being paused for a week and then revised schedule coming out on Monday. 'There was a lot of chaos and hence, the BCCI advised selectors to pick the squad with those players whose teams are or highly likely to be out of contention for the IPL 2025 playoffs. The India 'A' players named in the squad are likely to leave for England on May 25,' said a source aware of developments to IANS.
