‘Cop bureau': Former neta held in Noida, planned unit in Kol

Kolkata: Bibhas Adhikari, a former Trinamool Nalhati block neta, under the scanner of CBI and ED for his role in the cash-for-job scam, had applied to Beleghata police on July 30 to run an "International Police & Crime Investigation Bureau", cops said on Monday. Adhikari was arrested in Noida on Sunday along with five others, including his son, for running a similarly named fake police agency. "On July 30, an information was received at Beleghata PS that an NGO has installed their signboard on premises no. P 294 CIT Road, 2nd floor, Scheme -IV with the name of 'International Police & Crime Investigation Bureau'. They were called at Beleghata police station and after verification of documents they were asked to remove the signboard. With the intervention of local police, they removed the signboard. It was also found that they never started their operation from the said address. Their lawyer was informed that the word 'police' and blue-red icon can be used by state or central police organisation only. Strict vigil is being maintained over the property," said DCP (ESD) Gaurav Lal. Meanwhile, the Noida arrest has sparked a wave of allegations from locals in Beleghata and Phoolbagan, where Adhikari rented the house. "This was within 1-km radius of Beleghata PS, displaying boards like "Interpol" and "Police". The boards were reportedly up until Sunday, but those were removed shortly after the arrests," said Sailen Chatterjee, a local. Elderly residents have expressed their concerns, stating, "Ever since he set up an office here, the peaceful neighbourhood seemed to have changed. He had three or four bouncers with him. They had chambers on their waists for firearms but no actual firearm was found with them," claimed a local. Another resident said, " He moved in a small convoy. Each of the bouncers wore blue attire and had firearms holsters on their waists." The owner refuted theses claims and said, "The Adhikaris rented the house about a month ago, saying it would be an office and said something about the police. I had an 11-month agreement with him. I don't know anything else." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Fake police station busted! Six men arrested for posing as govt officials, extorting money using fake documents

Noida Police have busted a fake police station and arrested six men for allegedly impersonating as government officials and extorting money using fake documents and IDs, reported Hindustan Times. According to police, the gang posed as public servants, collected donations via their website and displayed various national and international certificates online to appear legitimate. The gang was running a bogus office in the name of the International Police & Crime Investigation Bureau in Noida's Phase 3 area. Its members posed as public servants, collected donations via their website said the HT report citing the police. The fraudsters allegedly used fake identity cards and police-style insignia to create an air of legitimacy. They also showcased several national and international certificates on their website to appear authentic. During the operation, the police found a large cache of forged IDs, official-looking documents, passbooks, and cheque books from the fake office. DCP Shakti Mohan Avasthy said the accused claimed to be part of an 'international-level investigation agency' and contacted people under the pretext of verification or inquiries, according to the HT report. 'Initial investigation has revealed they possessed counterfeit stamps, letterheads, and replicas of various government emblems,' Avasthy added. In July, Uttar Pradesh Police had arrested a man accused of running a fake embassy from a rented house in Ghaziabad and duping job seekers out of money with promises of overseas employment. The accused, 47-year-old Harsh Vardhan Jain, was operating an "illegal West Arctic embassy by renting a house" in Ghaziabad, police had said. According to the police, Jain claimed to be the ambassador of fictional nations "like West Arctica, Saborga, Poulvia, Lodonia". He allegedly used vehicles with fake diplomatic plates and shared doctored photos of himself with Indian leaders to bolster his claims. "His main activities involved acting as a broker to secure work in foreign countries for companies and private individuals, as well as operating a hawala (money transfer) racket through shell companies," the police said in a statement following his arrest.

Interpol link, logo bearing similarity to govt insignia: How 6 Bengal men ran fake police station in Noida

Less than a month after a 'fake embassy' was busted in Ghaziabad, another bizarre case has come into light in Noida. A fake police station was being operated in the city to allegedly extort money from people, officers said Sunday. The Noida Police has arrested six men who had allegedly set up the International Police & Crime Investigation Bureau, the fake law enforcement office. The accused have been identified as Bibhash Chandra Adhikari, Aragya Adhikari, Babul Chandra Mandal, Pintu Pal, Samapadmal, and Ashish Kumar. Their educational backgrounds range from below Class 12 to graduates in law and arts. All six are originally from different districts of West Bengal and were living together in the rented office premises. On June 4, according to the police, the accused rented the premises in Sector 70. Within a week, they put up boards carrying a logo and colours resembling the insignia of the central forces. The gang allegedly claimed links with Interpol, and the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), and said they worked on 'international crimes and criminals.' They also claimed to have an office in the United Kingdom. 'They were projecting themselves as a parallel police organisation and promising to get official work done. The logo they used was similar to a government police insignia, but no copyright or trademark existed for it,' said Shakti Mohan Avasthy, DCP (Central). The group allegedly forged certificates in the name of various ministries, including Tribal Affairs, and Social Justice, to appear legitimate. They also maintained a website, where they would display these certificates and collect 'donations'. During the raid late on August 10, police recovered nine mobile phones, 17 stamp seals, six cheque books, nine ID cards, four boards bearing the bureau's name, multiple visiting cards, forged ministry certificates, a CPU, and Rs 42,300 in cash. Police also seized press ID cards, purported IDs of the IHRC, among other paraphernalia. An FIR has been registered at Phase 3 police station under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to impersonation, forgery, and cheating, as well as provisions of the IT Act and the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950.
