IB Nation Sports Talk: Boston College Insider Dan Rubin Talks Bill O'Brian, BC Quarterbacks
Irish Breakdown continues our offseason Notre Dame opponent series with Boston College insider Dan Rubin on today's show. Rubin and IB's Sean Stires discuss BC head coach Bill O'Brien heading into his second season as well as how the BC quarterback competition looks after the addition of former Alabama QB Dylan Lonergan. They discuss other questions the Eagles face as well as how ND defensive line coach and BC alum Al Washington factored in the coaching search before O'Brien was hired. There's much more to talk about in Rapid Fire as well. See the list of topics below! Today's Rapid Fire topics include: Advertisement * We discuss the announcement that Notre Dame men's basketball alum Pat Garrity will be the general manager for both the Irish men's and women's basketball programs. * We've talked a lot about the future of the Notre Dame - Southern Cal football series recently and there's more in the news on that subject. One of USC's suggested alterations to the Notre Dame series is playing it on the front end of the schedule, potentially with some neutral-site locations sprinkled in among games at each other's homes. Do we Buy or Sell those possibilities? * There's an ON3 video show that's asking if the expansion of the CFP to 16 teams would force Notre Dame to join a conference. Someone asked them 'if non-conference games stop mattering, what happens to the team that only schedules non-conference games. Is this the straw that breaks the camel's back to make Notre Dame join a conference?' We have thoughts on that. * The College Football Playoff is nearing consensus to change the seeding process next season and eliminate first-round byes for conference champions. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said recently that he's in favor of going to straight seeding for this year rather than the seeding format they had last year. That would also mean Notre Dame would be eligible for a first-round bye. The proposal requires unanimous approval from the 10 FBS conferences and Notre Dame to be enacted for the upcoming season. On a scale of 1 to 10: How confident are you it will actually happen? Advertisement * The NFL is going to vote on a new straight seeding playoff proposal this week. It would de-emphasize winning your division and incentivize winning for teams to host playoff games. So, if you're a wildcard team with a better record than a divisional winner, you would get to host a playoff game instead of the division winner. Do you Buy or Sell it? * NFL owners will vote on whether to allow NFL players to compete in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. There would be A limit of one player per NFL team on each national team participating. In other words, the Bears could have one player on Team USC, one player on Team Canada, etc. Buy or Sell NFL players playing flag football in the Olympics? Running Back Jonaz Walton Commits To Notre Dame
Notre Dame landed yet another big time commitment today with the announcement that Carrollton (Ga.) Central running back Jonaz Walton was joining the 2026 recruiting class. Notre Dame beat out Alabama, Tennessee, Florida and Stanford to land this big time player. Notre Dame has recruited Walton for well over a year and he was a top target the entire time. Former running backs coach Deland McCullough made Walton a huge priority, and that continued when Ja'Juan Seider was hired. McCullough played a major role in getting the Irish in a strong position with this talented runner and Seider did an impressive job getting him over the finish line. Advertisement Walton is the second running back to commit to Notre Dame in the 2026 class as he joins elite Texas running back Javian Osborne, who committed to the Fighting Irish two weeks ago. Walton and Osborne form a dynamic one-two punch at running back. Notre Dame has a loaded backfield on its current roster but Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price will soon be in the NFL and the Irish need to reload, something they are doing in incredibly impressive fashion with Walton and Osborne both committing. The Central star is an impact running back that ranks as a Top 100 recruit on the Irish Breakdown board. As a junior, the 5-9, 200-pound running back rushed for 1,387 yards and 14 touchdowns, but he was a dominant all-around player. Walton also caught 39 passes for 646 yards and four more scores, and he also returned two of his nine kick returns for touchdowns while averaging 38.4 yards per return. Walton rushed for 1,683 yards (8.8 YPC) and 22 touchdowns as a sophomore and 1,644 yards (8.8 YPC) and 20 touchdowns as a freshman. For his career, Walton has rushed for 4,714 yards (8.3 YPC) and 56 touchdowns, he's caught 66 passes for 953 yards and seven more touchdowns, and he's returned three kicks for scores. Walton also earned offers from Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, Texas, Florida State, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State, USC, Miami (Fla.), Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Auburn, Nebraska, South Carolina, TCU, Wisconsin, Stanford, West Virginia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kansas State, Duke, Vanderbilt, Virginia and UCF. Advertisement Walton is the 16th player to commit to Notre Dame. He joins Florida quarterback Noah Grubbs, Osborne, Florida wide receiver Dylan Faison, Georgia wide receiver Bubba Frazier, Pennsylvania offensive lineman Tyler Merrill, Michigan offensive linemen Ben Nichols, Gregory Patrick and Sullivan Garvin, North Carolina ends Ebenezer Ewetade and Rodney Dunham, Texas defensive tackle Tiki Hola, North Carolina linebacker Thomas Davis Jr., Ohio linebacker Jakobe Clapper, Florida cornerback Ayden Pouncey and Tennessee cornerback Chaston Smith. Running Back Javian Osborne Can't Wait to Bring a National Championship Back to Notre Dame
Notre Dame made a major statement on the recruiting trail when it landed Javian Osborne, one of the nation's most electric offensive players. The standout from Forney (Texas) High School picked Notre Dame over Michigan and an impressive live of suitors. Osborne, who checks in at 5-10 and 190 pounds, is widely considered one of the top running backs in the 2026 class, earning a 5.0-star upside grade on the Irish Breakdown board. Advertisement This is the first major recruiting win for new running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider, and it's a big one. Seider, who arrived with a strong reputation, wasted no time making a splash by going into Texas and pulling one of the state's best players. It's also a statement by Marcus Freeman and the rest of the Irish staff that they aren't just going to recruit nationally—they're going to win nationally. That message wasn't lost on Osborne, who made his expectations crystal clear, as was the primary reason he picked Notre Dame. 'Can't wait to bring this [national championship] back to South Bend!' Osborne told Irish Breakdown before getting into the reason he picked the Irish. 'Coach Freeman. He is the realest I've ever been around, and he knows how to lead young men and give them hope in their lives—something to live for.' Osborne has built great relationships with a lot of the Notre Dame staff, but its clear Seider made a big impact on this recruitment. Advertisement "Great! Love him," Osborne stated. "One of the best, if not the best running backs coach in college football right now. Outstanding.' Notre Dame didn't just win a recruiting battle—they brought in a leader and a culture fit. Osborne is not only an elite athlete, but also the kind of young man who will thrive at Notre Dame. His commitment to making an impact off the field is just as strong as his goals between the lines. 'Something I want the Irish fans to know about me is that I will give my all for Notre Dame Today,' he said. 'What does that mean? It means that on and off the field you're getting the full package—as a ball player and as a Notre Dame man. I will have a positive impact in the community.' As for his upcoming senior season? Osborne has big plans. Advertisement 'My goal for this upcoming season is to rush for over 2,500 yards and 50-plus total touchdowns—at minimum 45 rushing. I think it's a statement year for me! I gotta go out there and prove that I am who I am! I am one of none!' That confidence, that edge—it's exactly the kind of energy Notre Dame wants in its locker room. It's clear that Notre Dame is building a roster that will be able to compete for championships year after year. Notre Dame just added a difference maker—and he already has his eyes on a national title. Osborne brings a unique blend of speed, vision and physicality to the backfield. When you turn on the tape the traits pop: he sees the field with patience and burst, hits the hole with authority, and uses a quick jump cut to make defenders miss in tight spaces. But he's not just slippery—he's tough. Osborne finishes runs, breaks tackles, and has the speed to break off chunk plays and take it the distance. He also flashes reliable hands as a receiver, making him a true every-down threat. Linebacker Jakobe Clapper Commits To Notre Dame
Notre Dame remains red hot on the recruiting trail thanks to a commitment from Cincinnati (Ohio) St. Xavier linebacker Jakobe Clapper. Notre Dame had been considered the front runner for some time but now the Ohio standout is officially in the Notre Dame 2026 class. Clapper has been a frequent visitor to Notre Dame and has been to campus twice this spring and winter. He was offered by the Irish last March and has been a top target ever since. Since that offer he has been on campus a total of four times as he and the Irish staff continued to build a strong connection. Advertisement The 6-2, 205-pound linebacker had an outstanding junior season for the Bombers. He racked up 105 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and two break ups. That dominance earned a first-team All-Ohio honor as a junior. He was high school teammates with Notre Dame 2025 signee Gordy Sulfsted. Clapper is an athletic linebacker with the frame to fill out nicely. He shows impressive downhill speed and the range you want to play linebacker at a high level. Clapper earned a four-star upside grade on the Irish Breakdown board and also earned a four-star grade from Rivals. He had offers from Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Louisville, Illinois, West Virginia, Michigan State, Indiana, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Boston College, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Duke and Vanderbilt. Clapper is the 13th player to commit to Notre Dame in the 2026 class. He joins Florida quarterback Noah Grubbs, Florida wide receiver Dylan Faison, Texas athlete Bubba Frazier, Michigan offensive linemen Ben Nichols, Sullivan Garvin and Gregory Patrick, Pennsylvania offensive lineman Tyler Merrill, North Carolina edges Rodney Dunham and Ebenezer Ewetade, North Carolina linebacker Thomas Davis Jr., Florida cornerback Ayden Pouncey and Tennessee cornerback Chaston Smith.
