Braintree advances to Little League World Series
The Braintree Little League team is heading to Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Braintree American 12A team advanced to the Little League World Series Thursday night with a 3-2 win in extra innings over Bedford, New Hampshire in the New England Regional Championship game in Bristol, Connecticut. Braintree scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning. With Thursday night's win, Braintree improved to a perfect 17-0 this summer. After a quick hero's welcome back home this weekend, Braintree will head out to Williamsport for the Little League World Series, where they'll face the Southeast champs from Irmo, South Carolina. Braintree's opening-round tilt in the Little League World Series against Irmo is set for Thursday, August 14 at 3 p.m. The game will air on ESPN. The path Braintree has taken to Williamsport can be summed up on one word: Dominance. After sweeping their summer slate and winning the District 8 tournament, the Section 2 tournament, and the Massachusetts state tournament, the Braintree Little Leaguers advanced to the town's first-ever New England Regionals. They had no issues in Bristol, Connecticut, either. Last Saturday, Braintree needed just three innings to crush Team Maine to the tune of 15-0. On Monday, they dispatched Vermont 10-0, with the game called in the fifth inning. Braintree hadn't allowed a run over eight innings in the New England Regional entering Thursday's win. Braintree is the first Massachusetts team to win the New England Regional since Middleboro Little League in 2022. Massachusetts teams have won five New England regional titles since 2001.

South Carolina man's family seeks answers in his death 3 days after arrest
The family of a South Carolina man who died three days after being arrested last month demanded the release of police body camera video and answers regarding his death on Tuesday. Byron Jackson, 45, died in the days after his June 22 arrest by the Irmo Police Department, following a 911 call alleging that someone had gotten into a fight, according to his family's lawyer, civil rights attorney Bakari Sellers. The lawyer said that Jackson was not involved in a fight and the cause of his death is unclear. "I can tell you that we're not going to allow the Irmo Police Department just to treat him as some other young African American kid," Sellers said at a press conference on Tuesday. "He's dead now. You guys going about your business -- that's not going to happen on our watch." Byron Jackson's mother Bettie Jackson, who was present at the news conference with other family members, was visibly distraught. "We all loved him dearly, and we talked two and three times a day, and I'm surely, surely going to miss him," Bettie Jackson said. "In fact, not 'am going to miss him' -- I'm missing him already." Irmo Police Chief Bobby Dale told ABC News in a statement on Tuesday that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has taken over the investigation and that he could not make any further statements to ensure the process is conducted appropriately. Also Tuesday, SLED confirmed in a statement to ABC News that Byron Jackson died on June 25 in the hospital, three days after the arrest. They said that the investigation is ongoing, and more information may be available at "a later time." The Richland County Coroner's Office did not immediately reply to ABC News' request for Byron Jackson's autopsy and cause of death. "We do know that the Irmo Police Department can release the body cam," Sellers said. "We do know that body cam footage does exist, and we're asking them to do that." Sellers requested the release of the identities of the officers involved. He also denied the police department's alleged account that a high-speed chase ensued before Byron Jackson's arrest, or that he was involved in a fight before police arrived. Sellers said he doesn't know why a 911 call was made in regard to Byron Jackson. "This started with a 911 call from a resident of Irmo. I'm not sure what she thought she saw," Sellers said. "I can't go into her head, but there was not a fight in the vehicle. There was one person -- who was Byron -- in that vehicle. That is a fact." Sellers also said that Byron Jackson was in a work utility van that had "its own issues" and that he knew from investigators that there was no high-speed chase. The attorney said that, after police arrived, there was a low-speed collision, Byron Jackson and an officer ended up at the bottom of a ravine and the South Carolina resident was handcuffed. After that, Sellers said he died and the family doesn't know how.

Michigan football steals 4-star EDGE from South Carolina
The post Michigan football steals 4-star EDGE from South Carolina appeared first on ClutchPoints. The recruiting surge continues! The Michigan football team landed yet another impressive commitment on Tuesday as four-star EDGE Julian Walker announced that he will play for head coach Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines. North Carolina and South Carolina were two main competitors here, and it is especially impressive that Michigan beat out the Gamecocks. Walker's father, Jamil Walker, is the assistant football strength and conditioning coach at South Carolina. His son would rather play for Michigan. Advertisement 'BREAKING: Four-Star EDGE Julian Walker has Committed to Michigan, he tells me for @rivals,' Hayes Fawcett said in a post. 'The 6'6 250 EDGE from Columbia, SC chose the Wolverines over North Carolina & South Carolina.' Julian Walker had a message for the college football world upon his commitment to the Michigan football team: 'I'm beyond grateful for the opportunity to be a MICHIGAN MAN,' he said. Walker is a four-star recruit, according to 247Sports. He is the #155 player in the 2026 recruiting class, the #16 EDGE and the #3 player in the state of South Carolina. Walker currently attends Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, SC. The in-state Gamecocks tried their best, but Michigan was the right fit for this elite prospect. Advertisement 'Walker possesses great overall size and length that correlates well to the next level as a 3-4 defensive lineman,' Walker's scouting report reads. 'He has fluid movements to get past the offensive tackle from both inside and outside rushes. Chases the ball with a great motor and can turn and flatten down the line of scrimmage.' Michigan has had some elite pass rushers come through the program in recent years, and Walker is good enough to be one of the next. The sky is the limit for him. 'Plays with reactive quickness and has a counter move,' the scouting report continues. 'Walker has the strength and toughness to be disruptive against the run and make plays as a true 3-down player. Depending on body type and how he develops, Walker could potentially move inside on passing downs.' The 2026 Michigan football recruiting class is shaping up to be a special one. The Wolverines got off to a slow start, but the commitments are now pouring in almost daily. Sherrone Moore and Michigan now have one of the best recruiting classes in the country, and more commitments are coming. Numerous top targets are expected to announce their decisions this week, and the Wolverines are in great position with a lot of them. 12 taken to hospitals after lightning strike at South Carolina lake
LEXINGTON, S.C. — A dozen people were taken to hospitals Tuesday after a lightning strike at a South Carolina lake, officials said. Emergency crews responded to Dominion Beach Park near the Lake Murray Dam and assessed 20 patients, including 12 children, Lexington County officials said in a news release. They treated 18 people on the scene and 12 of them went to hospitals, according to county spokesperson Vanessa Diaz. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening and all of the patients were expected to recover, officials said. Dominion Beach Park was expected to reopen Wednesday following safety assessments and clearance from authorities. The weather was sunny with some clouds nearby, but not overhead when the strike happened, the Irmo Fire District said in a social media post. Lightning hit the water as several people were holding on to or swimming near a metal cable and buoys that surround the swimming area, the agency said. 'Everybody got quite a jolt,' the fire agency said. 'We're so fortunate that injuries were not worse than they were.' Injuries included minor burns, Irmo Fire District spokesperson Sloane Valentino said by telephone. Those who were holding on to the cable had the worst injuries, he said. Meteorologist Matt Gropp with the National Weather Service in Columbia called it 'a bolt from the blue,' noting that people at the lake may not have been aware of a pop-up thunderstorm a few miles to the south. It didn't even rain at the lake, Gropp said. 'It was one of the first strikes of the storm and the people there weren't expecting it,' he said. The Associated Press
