Connected Vehicles Are Leaping Into The Driver's Lane, And Iteris' Software And Hardware Stack Is Playing A Role
By Meg Flippin Benzinga DETROIT, MICHIGAN - May 28, 2025 ( NEWMEDIAWIRE ) - The idea of vehicles communicating with each other and with roadside infrastructure is no longer in the conceptual stage. It's beginning to be deployed on the ground as cities, municipalities and government agencies around the world look for ways to enhance safety and reduce traffic congestion. After all, connected vehicle (CV) technology enables vehicles to share information about driving conditions, traffic and accidents in real-time. That data can be vital to agencies in charge of the world's roadways. As a result, the market is predicted to reach $446.6 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 19.5% over ten years. In 2023, the market was only valued at $75.2 billion, underscoring the growing demand for CV technology. Iteris Is At The Forefront Of The CV World Iteris Inc., a global player in connected vehicle (CV) and connected vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology is helping shape this movement, churning out AI-powered sensors, cameras and software designed to improve intersections and roadways around the world. Take Iteris' V2X Connect software application as one example. V2X Connect, which tests and verifies that connected vehicle devices are transmitting and receiving secure and reliable messages in the field, was recently certified by OmniAir Consortium, the leading industry association promoting interoperability for Intelligent Transportation Systems, tolling and connected vehicles. Iteris said that it was certified by OmniAir Consortium because V2X Connect can effectively capture and analyze over-the-air (OTA) network traffic, offering real-time and offline analysis via its mobile application. This helps traffic management agencies and systems integrators efficiently deploy connected vehicle applications. The company's advanced diagnostic tool is used by transportation personnel, system integrators, Iteris distributors and general contractors. The Florida Department of Transportation Traffic Engineering Research Laboratory and USDOT Federal Highway Administration are among the customers using V2X Connect in their connected vehicle initiatives. 'Iteris' work on the V2X Connect test system sets a new benchmark in the industry,' says Jason Conley, executive director of OmniAir. 'This test system can benefit test laboratories, infrastructure owners/operators, and the wider industry.' A Hardware Agnostic, Interoperable Approach Then there is Iteris' VantageARGUS CV - previously known as BlueARGUS - a suite of software designed for transportation professionals who want to harness the full potential of connected vehicle applications and travel-time data. The SaaS offering, which is hardware agnostic and interoperable, can enable a variety of connected vehicle applications, including travel time and speed data collection, management and performance measure analytics. While VantageARGUS CV serves as a congestion management solution, its capabilities stretch far beyond that to empower agencies to implement CV applications. The software's Origin-Destination (O-D) feature provides agencies with in-depth traffic flow and driver behavior data, detailing entire trip sequences and events to enhance traffic control, optimize signals and improve congestion management across designated zones. With VantageARGUS CV's interactive dashboard, the company says users can analyze metrics, monitor connected device uptime status, check travel time routes and speed patterns to optimize traffic flow and integrate statewide and city data - creating a holistic traffic management solution with all the necessary traffic data at agencies' fingertips. 'As roads become busier, the quest for smoother traffic flows and enhanced safety intensifies,' says Iteris. 'VantageARGUS CV, previously known as BlueARGUS, not only answers this call but paves the way for the future of traffic management.' Hardware Completes The Package Hand-in-hand with VantageARGUS CV is Iteris' BlueTOAD Spectra CV, which is a roadside unit that combines wireless technologies – Bluetooth(R) (2.4 GHz), Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) and Cellular Vehicle to Everything (C-V2X) (5.9 GHz) – into a singular, roadside unit. The BlueTOAD Spectra CV RSU combines DSRC/C-V2X with real-time and historical Bluetooth detection, providing V2X interconnectivity for safety and mobility applications in connected vehicle initiatives and providing synchronization with transportation agency travel-time and performance measures-based systems, reports Iteris. Connected vehicles are in the driver's seat, moving from the research stage to the deployment stage. Why Are Some State And Federal Transportation Agencies Relying On Iteris? ClearGuide Is Part Of The Reason
By Meg Flippin Benzinga DETROIT, MICHIGAN - May 22, 2025 ( NEWMEDIAWIRE ) - When it comes to protecting pedestrians crossing the streets and vehicles on the roadways and reducing traffic congestion, it takes more than traffic signals, crossing guards and law enforcement. Analyzing data generated by monitoring the position of individual vehicles over space and time can also play an important role. Such modern solutions to the issue can enable safer, less congested roads, centered around a software platform that can analyze all the data coming in to provide better results. Iteris Inc., a global player in connected vehicle (CV) and connected vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology, checks off all those boxes. ClearGuide(R), the company's transportation analytics solutions suite, is at the center of its offerings, helping agencies improve safety and mobility by turning large amounts of complex transportation data into insights for smart, data-driven operations and planning decisions. With real-time data collected from anonymized geolocation information from smart devices and analyzed by ClearGuide, agencies can make informed operational decisions, monitor congestion on any roadway and create in-depth before-and-after performance reports and post-event analysis. It doesn't require any hardware either. Additionally, because ClearGuide doesn't require any hardware for data collection, agencies can monitor traffic patterns without installing or upgrading existing infrastructure. Whether it's using information gathered by monitoring the position and behavior of vehicles as they travel the roads to manage traffic or spotting incidents and road work to help first responders identify faster routes, the company says ClearGuide can do it. The solutions suite can provide agencies with all the real-time, actionable data they need. The company's solutions couldn't come at a better time. As it stands, the average driver in America spends roughly 54 hours a year sitting in traffic. Meanwhile, traffic accidents cause $340 billion in damages annually, and about 7,500 pedestrians are struck and killed by motor vehicles each year. Reducing that is a priority, spawning an international effort to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries. Known as Vision Zero, the initiative leverages technology, enforcement and education to make the roads, crosswalks and intersections safer for everyone. ClearGuide Makes Roads Safer ClearGuide's solutions address that and more, helping with planning and safety – all the while cutting costs and boosting efficiencies for its clients. Take ClearGuide Safety for starters. With this analytics solution, data collected from vehicles can be used to identify speeding hotspots, red-light running patterns and pedestrian safety risks at intersections. Armed with that information, agencies can implement effective countermeasures. ClearGuide Safety can also be used to verify citizen complaints about unsafe travel areas – without having to send out personnel. The software can also analyze the effectiveness of countermeasures. Then there's ClearGuide Roadways. Leveraging performance measure reports, trend maps and congestion hotspot analysis, ClearGuide Roadways helps agencies improve real-time operations, incident management and work zone mobility through map tools and congestion alerts. It can also reduce costs and boost productivity when it comes to roadwork, thanks to Iteris' use of anonymized dashboard camera imagery loaded into ClearGuide. The front-facing dash cam images are obtained from commercial fleets using on-vehicle cameras for their delivery and service trucks – enabling ClearGuide to capture pre-project baseline data and identify any new issues. As a result, agencies can skip field staff observations, potentially saving the municipality money. Meanwhile, with ClearGuide's Road Surface Information (RSI) dataset, information about road friction, road roughness, potholes and speed bumps is collected from connected vehicle sensors. With both winter and summer datasets available, real-time friction data can be acted upon during winter, and defects on the road in the summer season can be detected before they become dangerous to drivers. Lowering Costs For Cities Around The World With 24/7 monitoring, ClearGuide can potentially replace thousands of person-hours of operational support, reports the company. ClearGuide can also help improve the safety of construction workers by reducing staff time in the field. Workers no longer need to install, maintain and move temporary detection systems for projects. Agencies can also identify where the project schedule can be accelerated with minimal traffic impact as traffic conditions are updated every five minutes in ClearGuide. Furthermore, ClearGuide helps agencies analyze and better manage congestion with features such as ClearGuide's Signal Trends, which is a set of probe data-based performance metrics. The company says it helps agencies reduce congestion by monitoring traffic signal performance and identifying deterioration at the intersection without reliance on infrastructure. The module updates intersection data every 10 to 15 minutes, displaying abnormal conditions as they emerge. Signal Trends complements Iteris' detection and traffic analytics software by helping agencies easily identify signal maintenance or traffic congestion problems at more intersections, including where they have not implemented traffic sensors. Then there is ClearGuide Volumes, which provides volume-based traffic analytics powered to help agencies make even more precisely honed planning and operations decisions and produce new types of traffic and congestion reports. With all that data and analytics at agencies' fingertips without the need for additional hardware, it is no wonder Iteris counts local municipalities, regional agencies, state Departments of Transportation and federal government transportation agencies including the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration and National Highway Institute as customers. They are using it for everything from preparing for hurricanes to streamlining data collection and analysis. Traffic congestion and road safety are major issues for cities and towns around the world. With efforts underway to fix the problem, software platforms like ClearGuide are in the driver's seat. To learn more about Iteris and what its ClearGuide software platform can do, click here. Iteris' Vantage PedSafe System Helps Communities Achieve Their Vision Zero Goals
By Meg Flippin Benzinga DETROIT, MICHIGAN - May 16, 2025 ( NEWMEDIAWIRE ) - Blame it on dark roadways, speeding or distractions, but either way the nation has a pedestrian safety issue on its hands. Each year, more than 42,000 people are killed in traffic accidents on American streets and, as of 2022, some 7,500 pedestrians are struck and killed by a motor vehicle. Of those killed, 76% of collisions occurred after sunset. Meanwhile, pedestrian fatalities in lower income areas are nearly double those of other regions around the country. While drunk driving accounts for 43% of the deaths, something technology can't prevent, the majority (57%) are preventable and that's exactly what Iteris Inc. - a global player in intelligent transportation systems, advanced detection sensors and transportation software - is aiming to do with Vantage PedSafe. Vantage PedSafe is the company's advanced pedestrian safety system that is designed to work in all environments, whether it's a low-light crosswalk or busy intersection. The new solution from Iteris combines detection, real-time countermeasures and data analysis into one system that can help communities support the safety of their pedestrians. Vision Zero Argues Accidents Aren't Inevitable It comes at a time when an international effort is underway to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries. Known as Vision Zero, it is a strategy that sees traffic collisions as preventable, not inevitable. It leverages technology, enforcement and education to make the roads, crosswalks and intersections safer for everyone. It involves designing safer roadways and using technology to reduce the severity of crashes and accidents. It's also the main focus of Iteris with its Vantage PedSafe system. Take dark environments for starters. Since many of the pedestrian fatalities happen in low-light crosswalks and intersections, Iteris Vantage PedSafe is a radar-based solution that detects pedestrians and can illuminate an agency's existing signage to create a safer environment for everyone. The radar detects a pedestrian in real time and can automatically illuminate the signage to let the driver know a pedestrian is crossing. It can also alert pedestrians as they are crossing the intersection. The company is currently capable of sending real time information to all connected cars, alerting drivers to a person they may not see if they are wearing dark clothing or the road is not well-lit. The radar system, which works in all lighting and weather conditions, can be installed at crosswalks, intersections and high pedestrian traffic areas such as school crossings. In addition to the radar system, Iteris' pedestrian information is automatically uploaded into the company's ClearGuide analytics program. That can enable users to get a better understanding of what's happening in intersections and what the best counter safety measures are to deploy. In addition to traditional intersections, the company says the same insights can be used at midblock crossings and unmarked crossings where pedestrians are likely to jaywalk. Controlling Traffic Lights With Iteris Pedestrians stuck at a crosswalk when the traffic signal changes is another contributing factor to fatalities. After all, not everyone can get across in the average calculated time; whether it's because of a disability, they have children in tow or are distracted. Iteris attempts to address that problem with its radar system. It sends a real-time message to the traffic signal to delay changing to green until the pedestrian is safely on the curb. Once the pedestrian clears the crosswalk, the traffic light will change to green. What makes this particularly attractive, says Iteris, is that its radar technology can work with all traffic lights on the market. What's more, it doesn't seriously impact the flow of traffic because the red light is only delayed when the slower pedestrians are crossing. Iteris' Vantage PedSafe system can also capture when pedestrians are crossing when they shouldn't be, and send the data to its ClearGuide analytics platform. There it can be leveraged to assess relative risk by comparing real-time traffic volume and speed with different timeframes. It can also identify locations where vehicles consistently exceed speed limits in zones near vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as school zones, giving agencies the data they need to take targeted safety measures such as putting up physical barriers, increasing the number of crossing guards and/or improving sidewalks and pathways connecting schools and neighborhoods. The data can also be used to stagger dismissal times and develop strategic drop off points. Pedestrian traffic deaths are a serious concern. So much so that some communities in the U.S. and other regions are committed to ending it once and for all. Iteris, with its advanced radar Vantage PedSafe system, wants to play a major role in that.
