2024-2025 UNC basketball starter signs first professional contract

Where will this former Tar Heel play his first season of professional basketball? The North Carolina Tar Heels barely crept into March Madness this year, much to the anger of college basketball analysts. After getting blown out at Duke and Clemson to open February, plus a near-loss to Pitt at home, UNC needed to win virtually every game for a shot at the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina then embarked on a 6-game winning streak, nearly extending that by a seventh game in its regular-season finale against the Blue Devils. The Tar Heels then beat Notre Dame and Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament, setting up a rematch with Duke, which was enough for a bid in college basketball's most prestigious postseason tournament. A huge factor in UNC making that late-season run was rarely-utilized power forward Jae'Lyn Withers, whose basketball career will now continue overseas. On Wednesday afternoon, Withers signed a 1-year deal with Dutch club Heroes Den Bosch, which plays at the highest tier of professional basketball in the Netherlands. Withers will be joining a championship team in Heroes Den Bosch, which won the past two Dutch Cups as members of the BNXT League. Withers only won one title at North Carolina, which captured the 2024 ACC Regular Season Championship. Withers spent most of his Tar Heels career coming off the bench, starting just 23 of 74 games for Hubert Davis, but proved to be a real difference-maker in February and March. Withers scored a career-high 21 points – on seven made 3-pointers – in UNC's second round ACC Tournament game against Notre Dame, his fifth time in eight days reaching double-digits. On Feb. 22 in an 81-66 win against Virginia, Withers recorded his second double-double of the year, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Seven days later, Withers scored 11 points and grabbed 10 boards in a 92-73 victory against Miami. Now playing overseas, Withers has a great chance to continue his late-season from North Carolina's most recent run to March Madness. Jae'Lyn Withers buries 7 3-pointers and North Carolina rolls past Notre Dame 76-56 in ACC Tournament

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Jae'Lyn Withers scored 21 points — all on 3-pointers — and Ven-Allen Lubin had 17 points and 10 rebounds in North Carolina's 76-56 rout of Notre Dame on Wednesday, the second day of the ACC Tournament. North Carolina made nine of 17 3-pointers in the first half, highlighted by Withers, who made five of six. His first three 3-pointers, all in row, helped the Tar Heels build a 17-5 lead in the opening five minutes. Later, he made two more in a 12-0 run that gave the Tar Heels a 37-17 lead. North Carolina led 43-29 at halftime. Advertisement Five players scored for the Tar Heels in the first 7 1/2 minutes of the second half as they extended their lead to 58-38. The Tar Heels won six of their last seven games to close the regular season, reaching 20 wins for the 55th time in 72 seasons in the ACC. Advertisement North Carolina finished in a tie for fourth place in the regular season and was seeded fifth in the tournament. The Tar Heels will play No. 4 seed Wake Forest on Thursday. SMU, the other team tied for fourth, was given the sixth seed. SMU drew Syracuse for a late game on Wednesday. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. Shooting guard in transfer portal to visit UNC basketball program

Shooting guard in transfer portal to visit UNC basketball program The next visitor for the UNC basketball program has been revealed The transfer portal is going to be a very important one for the North Carolina Tar Heels as they face a critical offseason trying to replace some key losses. With RJ Davis and Jae'Lyn Withers exhausting eligibility and Elliot Cadeau and Jalen Washington both entering the transfer portal, the list of needs grew. Now, as the dead period approaches, the Tar Heels are set to host a key transfer portal target this week. Per Joe Tipton, West Virginia guard Jonathan Powell will meet with North Carolina via Zoom on Tuesday. He will then meet with Ole Miss via Zoom on Wednesday. As Topton notes, Powell just completed an official visit to Ohio State on Tuesday as well. The 6-foot-6 shooting guard will be a sophomore this year and is coming off a freshman season in which he averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 assists per game. He shot 37.8 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from the three-point line. He appeared in 32 games and made 23 starts for the Mountaineers. The Tar Heels have already hosted one guard already and are showing some interest in other players but they have yet to secure a commitment out of the portal yet. UNC mounts another furious comeback, falls short in loss to Ole Miss

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (WNCT) — Fresh off a First Four blowout win over San Diego State, North Carolina's men's basketball team traveled to Milwaukee to meet up with No. 6 seed Ole Miss in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament. Behind a hot-shooting start, Ole Miss led 44-26 at the half. UNC had injury to insult in the second half when Jae'Lyn Withers went down with an ankle injury. The Tar Heels trailed by 15, 56-41, with just less than 14 minutes to go in the game. Much like in the ACC Tournament versus Duke, UNC had a furious comeback, cutting the game to a two-point game with just a little more than a minute left. The Rebels were able to survive as a 3-pointer from former Virginia Tech guard Sean Pedulla, free throws and defense down the stretch led to a 71-64 victory. The Tar Heels' season finishes at 23-14 while Ole Miss moves on to take on No. 3 seed Iowa State Sunday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
