2024-2025 UNC basketball starter signs first professional contract
The North Carolina Tar Heels barely crept into March Madness this year, much to the anger of college basketball analysts.
After getting blown out at Duke and Clemson to open February, plus a near-loss to Pitt at home, UNC needed to win virtually every game for a shot at the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina then embarked on a 6-game winning streak, nearly extending that by a seventh game in its regular-season finale against the Blue Devils. The Tar Heels then beat Notre Dame and Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament, setting up a rematch with Duke, which was enough for a bid in college basketball's most prestigious postseason tournament.
A huge factor in UNC making that late-season run was rarely-utilized power forward Jae'Lyn Withers, whose basketball career will now continue overseas.
On Wednesday afternoon, Withers signed a 1-year deal with Dutch club Heroes Den Bosch, which plays at the highest tier of professional basketball in the Netherlands.
Withers will be joining a championship team in Heroes Den Bosch, which won the past two Dutch Cups as members of the BNXT League. Withers only won one title at North Carolina, which captured the 2024 ACC Regular Season Championship.
Withers spent most of his Tar Heels career coming off the bench, starting just 23 of 74 games for Hubert Davis, but proved to be a real difference-maker in February and March.
Withers scored a career-high 21 points – on seven made 3-pointers – in UNC's second round ACC Tournament game against Notre Dame, his fifth time in eight days reaching double-digits. On Feb. 22 in an 81-66 win against Virginia, Withers recorded his second double-double of the year, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Seven days later, Withers scored 11 points and grabbed 10 boards in a 92-73 victory against Miami.
Now playing overseas, Withers has a great chance to continue his late-season from North Carolina's most recent run to March Madness.

Earnhardt also said that he has no issue with Honeycutt signing with another team for the 2026 season. "I have zero problem with a driver getting a different deal and going somewhere else. Now, you'd like some loyalty, you'd like some commitment. You've given Kaden this chance, Niece has given him this chance to get into the Truck Series. Well, he used that opportunity, and he's going to go somewhere better and different." So what's next for Honeycutt? He'll represent Halmar Friesen Racing for the final eight races of the 2025 Truck Series season. North Carolina A&T alumna Kayla White set a personal best of 10.89 to win her heat, surpassing Sha'Carri Richardson's time of 11.07. Richardson delivered her strongest performance of the season, but White ultimately emerged as the faster competitor in their latest race. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden claimed victory in the race, setting a world-leading time of 10.65 seconds. But, the fact that White wasn't far off from Wooden and bested Richardson's time further proves her immense talent and her unique place in the sport with her HBCU background. White competed in track & field for the Aggies from 2015-2019. A former dancer, she made a definitive impact in her college career that etched her in the history of both the institution and the MEAC. White had a stellar career, securing 17 MEAC indoor and outdoor sprint and hurdle titles. She dominated the 60-meter and 100-meter hurdles, winning both events all four years with the Aggies. White also claimed multiple 4×100 relay titles and swept the 100 and 200-meter titles in her junior and senior seasons. She earned second place in the 60-meter hurdles at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships and also secured a runner-up finish in the NCAA Outdoor 100-meter final. In a post-race interview with Citius Mag, White shared her thoughts on both her performance and how the event unfolded. 'I knew it was a long time coming. My coach wanted me to come out here and drop a bomb and just, you know, run fast [because] I've been stuck in the same cycle since the season started running 11.1, 11.0. So, you know, for this first round, he wanted me to get my body ready for tomorrow, you know, to go those two rounds and make the team. 'I was happy to see that 10.8 baby because I ain't PR since 2019. So you know I'm still developing still becoming a great athlete. So that's just exciting for me to see.'
