Shooting guard in transfer portal to visit UNC basketball program
The transfer portal is going to be a very important one for the North Carolina Tar Heels as they face a critical offseason trying to replace some key losses. With RJ Davis and Jae'Lyn Withers exhausting eligibility and Elliot Cadeau and Jalen Washington both entering the transfer portal, the list of needs grew.
Now, as the dead period approaches, the Tar Heels are set to host a key transfer portal target this week.
Per Joe Tipton, West Virginia guard Jonathan Powell will meet with North Carolina via Zoom on Tuesday. He will then meet with Ole Miss via Zoom on Wednesday.
As Topton notes, Powell just completed an official visit to Ohio State on Tuesday as well.
The 6-foot-6 shooting guard will be a sophomore this year and is coming off a freshman season in which he averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 assists per game. He shot 37.8 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from the three-point line.
He appeared in 32 games and made 23 starts for the Mountaineers.
The Tar Heels have already hosted one guard already and are showing some interest in other players but they have yet to secure a commitment out of the portal yet.

He's one of the most polished pass rushers in the class, and with his size and strength, would have an opportunity to play early in his career. He's an elite player with the ability to be a difference maker against the run and as a pass rusher. He has 36 Power Four offers. Any team would be thrilled to land a player with his skill set. The Oklahoma Sooners will add Kreul to a class that also includes four-star defensive end prospect Daniel Norman and three-star edge Matthew Nelson. Oklahoma has an intriguing group of pass rushers that will be on the roster in 2026, but nobody that's established themselves as a bona fide defensive end. Unless Taylor Wein, Danny Okoye, or Adepoju Adebawore have a big year for the Sooners in 2025, the door will be open for Kreul to find a way into the defensive end rotation on day one. Pair of Florida Gators named to 2025 Bednarik Award preseason watch list
The Maxwell Football Club recently released its preseason watch list for the 2025 Chuck Bednarik Award, which included a pair of Florida football players. Defensive tackle Caleb Banks, along with edge defender Tyreak Sapp, were both named to the prestigious projection of college football's most outstanding defensive players.
