Ahmedabad's unique snack shop run by prisoners of Sabarmati Central Jail
It all began with a kite festival in 1995-96, where a fair was organised at the police headquarters in Ahmedabad and jail inmates had a stall where they sold bakery products, farsan (fried snacks) and bhajiyas (fritters). The first store run by convicts of Sabarmati Central Jail was later opened close to the prison on an experimental basis. Thus was born Jail Bhajiya House. Arvind Parmar, the Sabarmati Central Jail factory manager under whom Jail Bhajiya House falls, says, 'In 1997, the jail authorities allotted a place near RTO Circle to a jail convict who knew how to make farsan to start the selling of bhajiya on an experimental basis. The director-general of prison then was Vijay Singh Guman. It started in a small room on the property of the jail. The outlet got a good response and so, a shade with tables and chairs for customers was erected. As the shop started getting good response, we started putting 8-10 more prisoners on the job at the shop,' Parmar added. The bhajiyas became so popular that they now do business up to Rs 1 crore, says Director-General of Prisons K L N Rao. About the secret recipe for the bhajiyas, Parmar said, 'We have a fixed scale according to which the bhajiyas are being made. Skilled prisoners make the bhajiya, and under them other prisoners also get trained before the departure of the former. We strictly take care of the quality of the ingredients used. The officials of the food and drugs department regularly visit the shop and till date there is no quality-related complaint.' According to Parmar, in 2009, the place where the shop stood was acquired for road widening and a new place was allocated nearby. The jail authorities built a new ground+one storey building there and started a live counter of bhajiya. At the same building, the jail authorities also opened a room where various jail products were also sold. 'That shop functioned till around six-month months back. And now it has been dismantled and a new building is being built for Jail Bhajiya House with a heritage look. Currently, the sale of bhajiya has been temporarily shifted near Sabarmati Central Jail till the renovated building is ready,' Parmar said. Three-storey building with a heritage look Jail Bhajiya House is being rebuilt into a three-storey building with a 'heritage look' at the same spot. The renovation is likely to be over in the next six-eight months, says Rao, adding that the shop has become a landmark in the city. The revamped building of Jail Bhajiya House will be a three-storey structure comprising a bhajiya selling point, a display unit of products manufactured in jail, a banquet hall and restaurant serving Gandhi Thali, and a photo gallery with historic pictures. The estimated cost of the construction of the renovated building is Rs 2.4 crore. Parmar said that for the past around 10 years, prisoners of Sabarmati Central Jail also go to Kartik Purnima Fair in Somnath to sell the bhajiya in a stall provided by Somnath Temple Trust. Similarly, Jail Bhajiya House also sell the bhajiya at the food zone during the biennial Vibrant Gujarat event organised by Gujarat government As per the plan, the ground floor of the new building will be reserved for sale of the bhajiyas by the inmates. The second floor will house a museum, showcasing the time spent in Sabarmati Central Jail by freedom fighters such as Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Lokmanya Tilak, Kasturba Gandhi, Mahadevbhai Desai, Zaverchand Meghani. The restaurant and banquet hall, too, will have jail inmates as staffers.

DJ, DM conduct surprise inspection of Kashi jails; stress jail inmates' welfare, strict regulations
Varanasi: District Judge Jaiprakash Tiwari and District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar on Friday conducted a suprise inspection of the central and district jails to assess the operations and inmate welfare. The officials reviewed infrastructure, interacted with prisoners, and issued strict directives for improved jail management. At the Central Jail, the inspection began with a review of products made by inmates in the wooden furniture, steel, and brass units. The officials praised a gun metal statue of freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad displayed on the premises. An open gym was also inaugurated during the visit. During their round of the jail hospital, they interacted with patients to ensure access to necessary medical services. The team then visited high-security barracks, where they spoke with inmates, noted their grievances, and directed the jail superintendent to resolve the issues without delay. At the District Jail, the officials again engaged directly with inmates inside the barracks. The pair delighted fans with several collaborations, including 'Crazy in Love' and 'Drunk in Love,' as well as a remix incorporating 'Partition.' During one performance, Jay-Z made a notable change to a well-known lyric that originally referenced Kanye West. In fan footage shared online, the lyric was modified to include Beyoncé's name instead. The switch has reignited discussion about the strained relationship between Jay-Z and West. Tension between the two artists has been ongoing for years. In 2021, their collaboration on 'Jail' drew criticism from West, who claimed that Jay-Z's line about his red MAGA hat contributed to their fallout. Gig-goers were beside themselves as he walked on stage in Paris for night two, the closing night of her short European leg of the Cowboy Carter tour. The French capital has been dubbed Queen B's 'favourite city' by fans as she brought out Miley Cyrus for a guest performance of II Most Wanted days before. Jay-Z rapped his part of Crazy In Love before his wife walked off stage and left him to perform his iconic track N****s in Paris — a collaboration with Kanye West — solo. The 55-year-old rapper didn't miss a beat as he burst into the track from their 2011 album,Watch the Throne. However, he did alter one lyric to omit Ye's name from the song, singing 'Just might let you meet Bey' instead. While it may be a happy coincidence that Bey's name fits nicely in the track, Jay-Z — real name Shawn Carter — appears to no longer be friends with his close collaborator. The Gold Digger rapper has been behaving erratically over the past few years, having declared he was a 'nazi' before retracting that statement. Ye, 48, claimed the falling out was sparked by Jay-Z's involvement with 2021 album Donda on the song Jail. 'Why did Jay Z have to say 'no red hat' on Jail,' he said on X in a now-deleted post. 'That s*** tore me to my soul. We fought about it and he told me either leave that line on there or take my verse off. Me wearing the red hat was the most stand out example of me going against 'the program.' Do you guys think he was instructed to say that?' The 'red hat' is thought to refer to Ye's endorsement of Donald Trump and his MAGA hats in the former reality star's first presidential election run. Later, Ye posted a string of messages on X aimed at the Carters, which included questioning the mental capabilities of their seven-year-old child. Insiders claimed the family was looking into taking legal action before Ye removed the post. He made sure to tell everyone it was not removed to be 'a good person.' 'I need everyone to know that I took the post about Jay Z and Beyoncé's family down … because there was a possibility of my Twitter being cancelled [sic],' he wrote. A source told Page Six at the time that the Roc Nation founder 'will absolutely not stand' for the way Ye 'has spoken about their children.' Beyonce and Jay-Z have never publicly addressed the rift, choosing instead to put on these huge displays of family unity, like in Paris. Paris was actually the city where the youngster made her first on stage appearance during the 2023 Renaissance Tour, showing off those now-famous dance moves.
