DJ, DM conduct surprise inspection of Kashi jails; stress jail inmates' welfare, strict regulations
Varanasi: District Judge Jaiprakash Tiwari and District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar on Friday conducted a suprise inspection of the central and district jails to assess the operations and inmate welfare.
The officials reviewed infrastructure, interacted with prisoners, and issued strict directives for improved jail management.
At the Central Jail, the inspection began with a review of products made by inmates in the wooden furniture, steel, and brass units. The officials praised a gun metal statue of freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad displayed on the premises. An open gym was also inaugurated during the visit.
During their round of the jail hospital, they interacted with patients to ensure access to necessary medical services. The team then visited high-security barracks, where they spoke with inmates, noted their grievances, and directed the jail superintendent to resolve the issues without delay.
At the District Jail, the officials again engaged directly with inmates inside the barracks. Several prisoners voiced their concerns, and the jail superintendent was instructed to act on them immediately.

Autosomal (non-sex chromosome) markers were used to narrow down the connection between the victims and the donor. To verify that all four were related to each other, X-STRs were used. With the use of both X-STR and autosomal STR, we could establish the identities," said Prof Shukla. Dr Bhargav Patel, head of the CoE in DNA Forensics at NFSU, said that they have matched the DNA samples of the victims with nephews, cousins, grandparents and maternal or paternal uncles. "In conventional matches, we generally rely on either X-STR, Y-STR or autosomal STR test to establish identities. But in the cases associated with the crash, more than one test was employed in several cases. In some of the cases, even mitochondrial DNA matches were used. While nuclear DNA (with X and Y chromosomes) is inherited from both parents, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is inherited maternally," he said. The X-STR markers are inherited from mother to daughter and son, and from father to daughter, but not from father to son. Likewise, mtDNA is inherited maternally and can be matched with the maternal line. In one of the better-known cases from the airplane crash, the identification of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was carried out using the Y-STR from his nephew on the patrilineal branch. Earlier, his sister and son had provided the samples for the match. Experts said that ensure the quality of DNA samples, they relied primarily on teeth. Their second choice was bones such as the mandible (jaw) and clavicle (collarbone) that sustained severe temperatures. Several of the samples were in highly deteriorated condition, the team managed to match all samples, according to the experts.

Man, wife arrested for hacking father to death with axe
Ludhiana: A man and his wife allegedly hacked his father to death with an axe because he did not transfer ownership of his house to her. A case has been filed against the accused, Jugraj Singh of Jatana village and his wife, Renu Rani. Relatives of the accused handed them over to the police. The complainant, Bhinder Singh of Jatana village, said that his brother Balvir Singh lived with his wife Manjit Kaur, his son Jugraj Singh Raju, and daughter-in-law Renu Rani in the village. He added that in 2023, Renu Rani went to her parents' place in Majri village in a huff and demanded that her father-in-law, Balvir Singh, transfer ownership of the house to her. According to him, Jugraj Singh was an unemployed alcoholic while his brother worked as a shuttering contractor. He alleged that Jugraj sold Balvir's Tata 407 vehicle without informing him. Life Cut Short: Chinese Manjha Kills Biker
N ew Delhi: A youth on a scooter was killed in north Delhi on Friday evening when his throat was slit by a Chinese manjha. Police filed an FIR, but the kite flier is yet to be identified. The accident took place on Rani Jhansi Road in the Bara Hindu Rao area. The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Yash Goswami, a spare parts business owner. He lived with his family in Karawal Nagar in northwest Delhi. According to police, they were informed about the incident by pedestrians who saw the man falling off his two-wheeler when his throat was slit by the notorious Chinese manjha kite string. The cops rushed to the spot to find that Goswami had already been taken to the nearby Hindu Rao Hospital by the passers-by. The youth was declared brought dead presumably after huge blood loss due to his injury. He was identified from papers on his person and police informed his family about the tragedy.
