Dispute brews between HECO, Carpenters Union
HONOLULU (KHON2) — It's a dispute between Hawaiian Electric and the Carpenters Union. HECO told KHON2 that the Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters is going after them after the utility company refused to sign an exclusive project labor agreement with the Carpenters. We're told that currently about 1,200 HECO employees are represented by another union, the IBEW Local 1260. Hawaiian Electric to close Shift and Save program to new enrollments 'It was presented to us as a take it or leave it and that's why we look at this as a shakedown – somebody tells you you got to do something today and you got to sign this today or something bad is going to happen. And the bad thing that is happening that they're trying to have happen is to block the legislation that we're seeking, which is going to be related to overtime lowering cost for customers by helping us improve our credit standing,' said HECO's Government and Community Relations Corporate Communications Vice President Jim Kelly. 'Carpenters Union didn't even come up and talk to us. And while we represent the members of Hawaiian Electric, we also represent a lot of the signatories that do work for Hawaiian Electric. But again, we did not even get a call. We did not get a heads up that hey we want to maybe take some of your guys work,' said IBEW Local 1260 Business Manager and Financial Secretary Leroy for the Carpenters Union, Andrew Pereira, said any allegation that they're trying to leverage a project labor agreement is absolutely false. 'To be clear, Hawaiian Electric officials approached the Carpenters Union about the Securitization Bill, about this bill, to try to create a billion-dollar fund on the backs of ratepayers. And the Carpenters Union let Hawaiian Electric know that that is not a starting point. So any relationship between the Carpenters Union and Hawaiian Electric, the starting point would be absolutely no to this Securitization bill,' said Pereira. A New Advocacy Organization for the Future of Ocean City Launches: Ocean City 2050
Ocean City, NJ March 03, 2025 --( A new advocacy organization, Ocean City 2050, was announced today by a group of long-term Ocean City residents committed to preserving the city's unique identity, promoting responsible growth, and advocating for transparency and accountability in local government. Formed in response to growing concerns over governance, planning, and development, Ocean City 2050 seeks to engage the public, advocate for fact-based policymaking, and ensure the city remains a premier family-friendly destination for generations to come. A Collaborative but Distinct Mission Several of Ocean City 2050's members come from fellow Ocean City organization Friends of OCNJ History & Culture ('Friends of OCNJ'). Ocean City 2050 shares a commitment to community preservation with Friends of OCNJ History & Culture ('Friends of OCNJ'), but operates as an independent organization with a unique focus on governance and planning. • Ocean City 2050 will drive long-term policy advocacy, ensuring the city remains well-governed, family-friendly, and vibrant, with a focus on transparency, accountability, and responsible decision-making. • Friends of OCNJ will continue its mission of celebrating Ocean City's historic character through initiatives like house and garden tours, historical documentaries, an old-home database, and educational seminars. The Need for Stronger Community Involvement 'Like many towns along the Jersey shore, Ocean City has experienced massive change, from evolving demographics, to significant housing cost increases, to environmental threats, all of which require sound government policy to ensure that growth does not erase the unique history and culture of our island,' said Jim Kelly, a long-time resident and founding member of Ocean City 2050. 'Strong advocacy is required to shape policies that will secure that future, rather than leaving them to a narrow group of special interests and perspectives.' The group is launching at a critical moment for Ocean City, following a series of concerning local decisions that have raised alarm within the community. 'Ocean City has recently witnessed events that highlight the need for stronger governance and broader community involvement,' added Bill Merritt, another founding member. 'The lack of leadership on the Boardwalk debate, the recent approval of a commercial marina in a small residential Glen Cove lagoon, the continued approval of massive duplexes with inadequate parking, and the failure to address the rising vacation costs for middle-class vacationers that is hurting our local economy, reflect a city that appears to have handed its rudder to special interests, rather than safeguarding its longstanding cultural identity.' Ocean City 2050's Core Priorities Ocean City 2050 will: Champion Good Governance & Transparency – Promote integrity and inclusiveness in local decision-making. Advocate for Fact-Based Planning – Push for an updated Master Plan that balances responsible development, historic preservation, and environmental sustainability while safeguarding Ocean City's long-term cultural identity. Explore the Future of Entertainment – Ensure Ocean City remains a premier family-friendly destination by studying and advocating for new attractions that align with its identity. Engage with Local Leaders – Work with elected officials and candidates to keep Ocean City's future a top priority. Hold Government Accountable – When necessary, pursue litigation to uphold the principles of good governance, preservation, and responsible planning. Call to Action: Join Ocean City 2050 'Ocean City 2050 is a community-led movement to ensure our city remains vibrant, family-friendly, and well-governed for generations to come,' Kelly added. 'We invite everyone, including citizens, residents and vacationers, to get involved, make their voices heard, and help shape Ocean City's future.'

On being a Pats fan on Super Bowl Sunday
Send questions or suggestions to the Starting Point team at . If you'd like the newsletter sent to your inbox, . TODAY'S STARTING POINT What has the incredible run of football excellence by the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs done to us, as New England Patriots fans? Bad things. Two weeks ago, we actually rooted for the Buffalo Bills to dethrone the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game. For anyone who recalls the frequent curb-stompings the pre-Brady/Belichick Patriots suffered at the hands of Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, and the Bills of the 1990s, cheering for Buffalo was, well, unnatural , like a weekend getaway to the But in the interest of defeating Kansas City and protecting New England's legacy as the greatest football dynasty of the current millennium, we sports hate, of course. We love Bills fans; there's nobody with whom we'd rather Advertisement And, alas, all we single-day Bills supporters got the full Buffalo fan experience — a brief hope for victory by a superbly talented team that yet somehow managed to fall just short in the Quarterback Tom Brady held the Lombardi Trophy after the Patriots won their sixth Super Bowl in 2019. Jim Davis/Globe Staff Social media bloomed with AI-generated photos of NFL officials dressed in Chief's gear, and, yes, it does seem like KC gets the breaks. But remember: During New England's reign, we made fun of fans in other cities who whined that their defense drew roughing penalties for just thinking unkind thoughts about Tom Brady. Maybe it wasn't quite that bad, but let's acknowledge that when the Patriots were good, they had a reputation for Advertisement New England won It doesn't get any easier this weekend for Patriots fans who feel the Chiefs uncomfortably nipping at the heels of New England's dynasty. KC is chasing its fourth championship since 2020, and trying to win its third in a row, which is something New England never did. It's something no NFL team has ever done. The NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles are Patriots fans' last hope to stiff-arm the Chiefs' momentum, at least for this season. It won't be easy to root for Philly, with memories of Super Bowl LII, in 2018, still fresh in our heads — When President Trump is done declassifying the secret JFK files, how about releasing the contract Foles signed with the Devil to play the most clutch game of his life? There is nothing wrong with rooting against a team, though I used to think players and coaches from the 1972 Miami Dolphins took it too far. The members of the only undefeated squad in NFL history are known for literally popping champagne every season when the last undefeated team Advertisement I get it now. I may even ice some bubbly for the Super Bowl this weekend. Whatever the outcome, it will come in handy. As Napoleon On this Sunday only: Go Eagles.
