Drew Brees discusses AFC quarterbacks needing to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs for legacy
This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees about his partnership with Jimmy John's and creating his personalized sandwich, The Brees #9. He also compares the other top AFC quarterbacks competing with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs to the challenges NBA great Michael Jordan faced early in his career. "I lived on that (Jimmy John's) in college, and then obviously, here we are 25 years later. That's still probably one of my favorite meals. There is a slight modification because I can't do dairy, so I have no cheese and add hot peppers. So that is the actual secret to the Brees #9, and from now until the end of August, even though I'm trying to talk them into the rest of the year, it will be a Jimmy John's anywhere in the country," said Brees, "You say, Give me the Brees #9. That is exactly the sandwich you're going to get. It's the Italian nightclub, and those proceeds will go to the Jimmy John's Foundation, which supports the Brees Dream Foundation and Boys and Girls Clubs nationwide. So really, excited about that. We've got 12 stores in the New Orleans market that have been doing that since 2011, and it's been a great relationship and partnership with Jimmy John's ever since." Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson are recent MVPs who haven't been able to reach the Super Bowl due to losses in the AFC Championship to Mahomes and the Chiefs. Brees believes that both superstar players must lead their teams to the big game for their legacies. "I think they have to (defeat Kansas City), and you look at the history of sports and from going back to the (Chicago) Bulls and (Detroit) Pistons." said Brees, "Bulls couldn't get past the Pistons, and figure out a way to do it, and the bad boys go into and they're beating up Jordan, and then, Jordan goes through that, that evolution of, all right, I got to gain 15 pounds so I can take the pounding and I go in the paint against these guys. So, just little things like that, where it's like, Alright, what's going to be the key because there's no doubt that both the (Baltimore) Ravens and the (Buffalo) Bills sit there on their schedule, and they circle the Chiefs. Not only do we have to get by these guys in the regular season, but they're the team that we're gonna have to beat in the postseason, and in many cases, it's been in Arrowhead (Stadium), although the Chiefs have gone everywhere I want to. So yeah, absolutely, that's what they're thinking about." Fans can order The Brees #9, Drew's personal Jimmy John's go-to order, for the first time. Available for a limited time through August 31st, the order supports Jimmy John's Foundation, benefiting Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Brees Dream Foundation.

Drew Brees weighs in on the Kansas City Chiefs' offensive line's impact on Patrick Mahomes
This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees about his partnership with Jimmy John's, creating his personalized sandwich, The Brees #9, and shared his thoughts on the Kansas City Chiefs' offensive line impacting Patrick Mahomes. "Well, first off, there's a lot of history there. So I grew up in Texas and went to Purdue University to play football and get a great education in 1997. I was probably ordering Jimmy John's to my dorm room about three times a week my freshman year." said Brees, "I was always amazed that even at like three in the morning, I could dial up Jimmy John's The next thing I know, some guy would come riding up in a bicycle about 15 minutes later with this perfect number nine sandwich, which is called the Italian nightclub. It's salami, capicola, ham, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, and then, like this, basil, oregano mix. It was the greatest bite of food ever." Like everyone in the football world, Brees witnessed the outcome of the Chiefs' loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. He shared his thoughts on the impact of the offensive and defensive lines on a game plan. "The game is won and lost in the trenches, so it's with the O-Line, with the D-Line, and their ability to pressure the quarterback and affect the run game. I mean, for a quarterback, you need a run game to create some balance, which, in large part, is that front five linemen plus a tight end, who are moving guys off the ball and creating lanes for the runners." said Brees, "In the passing game, one little breakdown up front can affect your opportunity to make a big player not make a big play down the field. Those are the differences in the game. It's usually when high-level teams are playing against each other. It's two or three games, two or three plays in the game that make the difference, I mean, with a guy like (Patrick) Mahomes, he can make everybody look good, I mean, there's plenty of times where I'm watching the tape and guys come free. He's making a miss, doing something to extend the play, keeping the drive alive, or making a big play, and you're like, Okay, that was just Mahomes being Mahomes. But at the end of the day, it's a team game, and that offensive line is so crucial in regards to the success of the quarterback and just the overall comfort level." Due to Philadelphia's pressure, Mahomes was sacked six times in Super Bowl LIX and committed turnovers. Brees detailed the mindset of a quarterback when faced with pressure in the pocket. Plenty of times, too, when all of a sudden, if the D-Lines get after you or you're having breakdowns up front, it certainly works into your thought process, and you begin to speed up a little bit. You start to think, Hey, I gotta get the ball out," said Brees, "so that can affect many things. It can affect how the play caller handles the game, too. Hey, I'm just unable to dial up certain things because we can't protect. But look at the Eagles' front, which was outstanding during the Super Bowl. I don't think it's anything against the Chiefs' front. I think it's more so that they were outstanding on the other side of the ball. But yeah, that game got away from them." Fans can order The Brees #9, Drew's personal Jimmy John's go-to order, for the first time. Available for a limited time through August 31st, the order supports Jimmy John's Foundation, benefiting Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Brees Dream Foundation.

Jimmy John's readies two Winnipeg links in sandwich chain
Turkey Tom is prepping for his move to Winnipeg. Until last year, sandwich chain Jimmy John's franchises were found solely in the United States. It's since been expanding within Canada — and at least two locations could open in Winnipeg this fall. Posters displaying sandwiches — perhaps not the Turkey Tom, but meaty options — plaster 1740 Pembina Hwy. and 1430 Ellice Ave. Both sites were construction zones Monday. MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS Jimmy John's, a U.S. sandwich chain, is opening in Winnipeg at 1430 Ellice Ave. Jimmy John's stayed mum on details but confirmed 'several' eateries are planned. Autumn could bring opening dates, the company shared. It will release more information nationally in upcoming weeks. Last year, the chain's parent company, Inspire Brands LLC, announced it would use a franchise model for a Canadian expansion. Just one Canadian location has launched thus far, in Toronto. 'I think this is a good fit for our local community looking for more restaurants,' said Sijie Sun, a University of Manitoba marketing professor. He asks his students to choose brands they'd like to bring to Winnipeg for a class project; Jimmy John's is often mentioned, Sun said. The Illinois-based company started in 1983 with four sandwich types. It now counts more than 2,000 stores and a slate of choices, including 'unwiches,' where buns are swapped for lettuce exteriors. The Winnipeg market will be competitive, Sun noted: Subway, Firehouse Subs and Tim Hortons are among the big sandwich-selling chains already in town. 'If there's more options, definitely people try the new one,' Sun said, adding brands create loyal customers. He's noticed American-born chains advertising local leadership at their Winnipeg hubs as a U.S.-Canada trade war persists. Grocery stores are labelling Canadian products as shoppers turn from U.S. imports. Jimmy John's will likely highlight its own connection with Canada, Sun said. 'I think this is a good fit for our local community looking for more restaurants.'–Sijie Sun 'You almost wonder, is this a good time (to come)?' added Wenlong Yuan, the Stu Clark chair in entrepreneurship and innovation at the U of M. 'Are they going to be damaged because of this political issue?' Arby's and Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers locations opened within the past four months, amid a 'Buy Canadian' push. Arby's ran out of meat on its first day due to demand; Freddy's was met with great anticipation. It's 'really hard to tell' whether companies are being stunted by a Canada-first sentiment, Yuan stated. U.S. chains including Krispy Kreme and Firehouse Subs have arrived in Winnipeg over the past 1.5 years. Winnipeg's size and diverse population can be a draw for businesses wanting to try operating in Canada, Yuan said. Franchisees may be locals wanting to bring the brand home or they may have experienced Winnipeg via family and friends. Inspire Brands tapped Foodtastic Inc., a Canadian franchisor, to expand Jimmy John's across Canada. Inspire Brands houses labels like Arby's, Baskin-Robbins, Buffalo Wild Wings and Dunkin'. Foodtastic counted more than 1,100 restaurants in January 2024 — the month of the deal's announcement — and $1.1 billion in sales. The Montreal-based company umbrellas Freshii, Second Cup Café and Pita Pit, among others. Jimmy John's Toronto location opened in November 2024. In September and October, the chain unrolled in El Salvador and South Korea. In Winnipeg, it's taking a former Urban Barn space off Ellice Avenue. MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS Jimmy John's is also opening a location at 1-1740 Pembina Hwy. 'I think another restaurant always brings in more people to the area,' said Desiree Rafael, an employee at neighbouring Acuity Vision Care. 'If they see that there is an optometry practice by where they're eating, then maybe they'll be inclined to come get their eyes checked.' The Jimmy John's off Pembina Highway replaces a Macao Imperial Tea. Jimmy John's wouldn't comment on whether more Manitoba shops are coming. Redberry Restaurants, parent company of sandwich brand Jersey Mike's Subs, said in January 2024 it aimed to open 300 Canadian locations by 2034. Redberry Restaurants didn't respond to questions about Winnipeg plans by print deadline. Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week.
