Broncos roster: LB Justin Strnad (No. 40) coming off career year
Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at sixth-year linebacker Justin Strnad, No. 40. Before the : Strnad (6-3, 235 pounds) was a four-year player at Wake Forest from 2016-19, playing in 46 games throughout his time with the Demon Deacons. Strnad compiled 244 total tackles (145 solo, 99 assisted, 24 tackles for loss), 8.0 sacks, four interceptions, 10 pass deflections, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Strnad's productive college career led to him being selected by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round (178 overall) of the 2020 NFL draft. Broncos tenure: Strnad's rookie season ended before it began, when he suffered a season-ending wrist injury. Strnad came back in 2021, making 36 total tackles (23 solo, 13 assisted) and three quarterback hits. From 2022-23, Strnad was exclusively playing special teams, playing over 80 percent of special teams snaps each year, making 10 total tackles (eight solo, two assisted). Strnad had a breakout season on defense in 2024, playing in all 17 games and one postseason game. He stepped up when starting linebacker Alex Singleton tore his ACL against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3. Strnad made 73 total tackles (48 solo, 25 assisted, eight tackles for loss), three pass deflections and 3.0 sacks in eight starts last fall. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Likely. Strnad helped step up in the absence of Singleton, along with the likes of Cody Barton. Barton departed in free agency, and the Broncos signed former 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw, likely putting Strnad in a backup role behind Singleton and Greenlaw. With starting experience, though, Strnad is a valuable rotational linebacker, and he should have a key role in the kicking game. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans. NFL free agency: Denver Broncos sign LB Justin Strnad
NFL free agency: Denver Broncos sign LB Justin Strnad The Denver Broncos are re-signing linebacker Justin Strnad to a one-year deal, DNVR's Justin Strnad first reported on Wednesday. The fully-guaranteed contract is worth $2.7 million, according to KUSA-TV's Mike Klis. Strnad (6-3, 235 pounds) entered the league as a fifth-round draft pick out of Wake Forest in 2020. He missed his entire rookie season after undergoing wrist surgery and then returned in 2021 and started in six games, totaling 36 tackles and one quarterback hit. Strnad then served primarily as a special teams player from 2022-2023 after losing his role on defense. Last spring, Strnad agreed to a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers that would have seen him reunited with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. Before that deal became official, though, Strnad had a change of heart and instead returned to the Broncos on a one-year deal. Denver later lost Alex Singleton to a season-ending ACL injury and Strnad ended up starting a career-high eight games in 2024. Strnad totaled 73 tackles, four quarterback hits, three sacks and three pass breakups last fall. He will now get a chance to compete for a starting role in 2025. Even if he doesn't end up starting on defense, Strnad figures to remain a key player on special teams. We are tracking all of the team's free agency moves on Broncos Wire. Broncos have 3 linebackers set to become free agents
The Denver Broncos have several positions to address this offseason. Perhaps most notably on defense, the Broncos need to shore up the inside linebacker spot. Denver currently has four ILBs signed for the 2025 season, but none of them are locked-in starters. Alex Singleton would have been in that category if not for a season-ending torn ACL last fall. Singleton is now coming off a serious injury at 31 years old with a big salary cap hit. The Broncos should not count on him as a Day 1 starter. Drew Sanders is a candidate to start this year if he takes a big leap in his development, but injuries have hindered him to this point in his career. Levelle Bailey and K.J. Cloyd figure to be special teams players, although Bailey could surprise this summer. Meanwhile, on the free agency front, Denver has three players -- Cody Barton, Justin Strnad and Zach Cunningham -- scheduled to hit free agency next week. Barton and Strnad were starters for most of last season, but the Broncos would be wise to find upgrades at both positions. Cody Barton (28) Justin Strnad (28) Zach Cunningham (30) The NFL's free agency negotiating window opens on Monday. Denver should be active in the linebacker market. 12 free agent linebackers for Broncos to consider
12 free agent linebackers for Broncos to consider After losing Alex Singleton to a torn ACL last year, the Denver Broncos eventually settled on Cody Barton and Justin Strnad as their two starting inside linebackers in 2024. It seems nearly certain that won't be the same starting duo in 2025. Barton and Strnad are both scheduled to become unrestricted free agents next week and it's unclear if the Broncos plan to re-sign them. As for Singleton, he will turn 32 next season and he's coming off a serious knee injury with a $6.9 million salary cap hit and no guaranteed money in his contract. His future with the club is also uncertain. Denver does have third-year linebacker Drew Sanders, who is poised to play on the inside this year, but even if he emerges as a starter, that's just one of the two spots filled. Consequently, inside linebacker is one of the team's biggest needs this offseason. Ahead of the start of NFL free agency next week, here's a quick list of 12 inside linebackers to keep an eye on. 12 free agent linebackers Nick Bolton (24) (24) Jamien Sherwood (25) (25) Ernest Jones (25) (25) Tyrel Dodson (26) (26) Dre Greenlaw (27) (27) Zack Baun (28) (28) Cody Barton (28) (28) Justin Strnad (28) (28) Robert Spillane (29) (29) Eric Kendricks (33) (33) Bobby Wagner (34) (34) Lavonte David (35) The NFL's free agency negotiating window will open on Monday followed by the official start of free agency on Wednesday.
