The operational metro network has soared from 248 km across 5 cities (in 2014) to 1,013 km across 23 cities by May 2025, adding 763 km in just 11 years. The annual metro budget for the financial year 2025-26 is Rs 34,807 crore. During the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament, Lok Sabha MP Dimple Yadav asked Minister of State (MoS) for Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) Tokhan Sahu about the current operational length of metro networks in Uttar Pradesh and their average daily ridership, city-wise. Metro installing energy efficient lifts, escalators
1 2 3 4 Kanpur: The Kanpur Metro Rail Project's Corridor-1 (IIT to Naubasta) was extended from IIT Kanpur to Kanpur Central in two phases. Now, preparations are in full swing for the third phase to further extend services up to Naubasta. As part of this phase, installation work of lifts and escalators is progressing swiftly at seven stations between Kanpur Central and Naubasta, namely Jhakarkati, Transport Nagar, Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Basant Vihar, Baudh Nagar, and Naubasta. Among these, Jhakarkati and Transport Nagar are underground stations, while the remaining five--Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Basant Vihar, Baudh Nagar, and Naubasta--are elevated. Notably, all lifts and escalators being installed at these stations are being manufactured in India under the 'Make in India' initiative. As part of the balance section of Corridor-1 (Kanpur Central to Naubasta), a total of 23 escalators and 26 lifts are being installed to facilitate passenger movement from station entry points to the concourse level and from the concourse to the platform level. The installation work is already underway. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Signs That A Heart Attack Is Imminent Learn It Wise Undo Each underground station will have 3 lifts and 4 escalators, while each elevated station will be equipped with 4 lifts and 3 escalators. So far, 11 out of the planned 23 escalators and 10 out of the 26 lifts were installed across all seven stations. Load testing is also being conducted alongside the installation of these systems. All lifts and escalators being used in the Kanpur Metro project were manufactured in Chennai, India under the 'Make in India' initiative. A key feature of these systems is their eco-friendliness. The lifts use regenerative braking technology that helps conserve energy. The smart escalators are designed to automatically pause when not in use for a certain period, further supporting energy conservation. From a safety standpoint, each escalator is equipped with three emergency stop buttons for quick shutdown in case of emergencies. These escalators also provide automatic announcements advising passengers to hold the handrail for their safety. Managing director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRC), Sushil Kumar, said, "Kanpur Metro team is fully committed to extending passenger services from Kanpur Central to Naubasta. To optimise time, system installations are being carried out in parallel with civil construction at all stations. All lifts and escalators installed are being manufactured domestically under the 'Make in India' initiative. Our entire team and contracting agencies are working with strong determination and meticulous planning to achieve our goal."

Metro signal installation nears completion, testing begins
1 2 Kanpur: Under the Kanpur Metro Rail Project's Corridor-1 (IIT-K to Naubasta), system installation work is progressing rapidly along with civil construction on the 5-km-long elevated section between Baradevi and Naubasta. This stretch comprises five stations- Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Vasant Vihar, Baudh Nagar, and Naubasta- where the installation of signals is now nearly complete. Preparations are in full swing to begin the testing phase of the signalling system in this section. Recently, on May 30, passenger services were extended from Motijheel to Kanpur Central station. Tunnelling work for the two underground stations beyond Kanpur Central- Jhakarkati and Transport Nagar- is currently in its final stages. Following this, the focus has shifted to system installations and finishing works on the Baradevi–Naubasta elevated section. This includes the construction of technical rooms and installation of systems related to track, third rail, telecom, signalling, and electricals. A total of 24 signals are to be installed between Baradevi and Naubasta. All 8 signals at Baradevi station have been installed. The next three stations- Kidwai Nagar, Vasant Vihar, and Baudh Nagar- each have 2 signals installed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Start Here - 2025 Top Trend Local network access control Esseps Learn More Undo At the final station, Naubasta, 7 out of 10 planned signals have been installed. The remaining 3 will be placed after track work is completed. All indoor cabling required for signal functioning at the stations has been completed. Additionally, Train Radio Access Antennas have also been installed at all five stations. These antennas play a crucial role in ensuring safe train operations by enabling wireless communication between the train and the Operations Control Centre. With the completion of signal installation, preparations for testing the signalling system have begun on the Baradevi–Naubasta section. The testing will start with the PICO Test, which involves verifying the wiring connections for any faults. This will be followed by the Partial Acceptance Test (PAT), where individual signalling components like signals and point machines will be operated independently. Finally, the System Acceptance Test will be conducted, during which a train will be run in accordance with the installed signalling system to validate its functionality. Sushil Kumar, managing director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited, stated, "The engineering teams of Kanpur Metro are advancing the civil construction and system installation work on the Baradevi–Naubasta section with complete dedication."

PM Modi meets family of Pahalgam terror attack victim Shubham Dwivedi in Kanpur
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the family of Pahalgam terror attack victim Shubham Dwivedi at Chakeri airport here on Friday, news agency PTI said. Businessman Shubham Dwivedi (31) was among the 26 people killed in the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. "The bereaved family members have been apprised about the PMO's decision. Prime Minister Modi will meet Shubham's wife Ashanya and his parents, Sanjay Dwivedi and Seema Dwivedi, at Chakeri airport soon after his special plan lands," Kanpur District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh had told PTI earlier. Shubham Dwivedi, who got married on February 12 this year, was visiting Pahalgam with his wife and other family members when terrorists opened fire on tourists resulting in his death. A week ago, Lok Sabha MP from Kanpur Ramesh Awasthi had written to the PMO, requesting Prime Minister Modi to meet the family of Shubham Dwivedi. Awasthi said in the letter that the family has 'thanked PM Modi for Operation Sindoor as it has brought peace to the soul of Shubham Dwivedi and has expressed desire to thank the prime minister for that.' Modi is in Uttar Pradesh to lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects aimed at boosting the region's infrastructure and connectivity. He will inaugurate the Chunniganj Metro Station to Kanpur Central Metro Station section of Kanpur Metro Rail Project worth over ₹ 2,120 crore. It will include 14 planned stations with five new underground stations integrating key city landmarks and commercial hubs into the metro network. Additionally, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate road widening and strengthening work of GT Road. The family has thanked PM Modi for Operation Sindoor as it has brought peace to the soul of Shubham Dwivedi. Two weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack, India on 7 May conducted precision strikes on at least nine terror camps in Pakistan in what is known as 'Operation Sindoor'. India and Pakistan indulged in four days of military action post Operation Sindoor. The two nations, however, agreed on an understanding to halt military action on 10 May.
