PM Modi inaugurates mega projects in Uttar Pradesh
The Prime Minister opened the section of the
Kanpur Metro Rail Project
connecting Chunniganj Metro Station to Kanpur Central Metro Station, covering 14 stations. The project includes five underground stations that link important city areas and commercial hubs. Additionally, the Prime Minister inaugurated the widening and strengthening works on G.T. Road.
In the energy sector, several projects were inaugurated to increase power generation and supply. A 660 MW extension of the
Panki Thermal Power Plant
in Kanpur, worth over ₹8,300 crore, was opened, along with three 660 MW units of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project valued at ₹9,330 crore. The Prime Minister also inaugurated 132 kV substations at Ecotech-8 and Ecotech-10 in Greater Noida, worth ₹320 crore.
Further developments include the inauguration of rail overbridges at Panki Power House Railway Crossing and Panki Dham Crossing on Panki Road in Kanpur. These structures will support the Panki Thermal Power Extension Project by facilitating coal and oil transport and easing traffic congestion.
The Prime Minister also inaugurated a 40 MLD tertiary treatment plant at Bingawan in Kanpur, which will enable the reuse of treated sewage water to promote water conservation.
Foundation stones laid for power and road projects
Foundation stones were laid for a 220 kV substation in Sector 28 of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), Gautam Buddh Nagar, to meet regional energy demands. The Prime Minister also laid foundation stones for road projects including the widening and strengthening of Gauria Pali Marg in Kanpur Nagar District and a road connecting Narwal node on Prayagraj highway to Kanpur defence node under the defence corridor.

Nagai–Kankesanthurai ferry completes one year, carries over 20,000 passengers
Nagapattinam: The passenger ferry service between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai (KKS) in Sri Lanka marked its first anniversary on Friday, having carried 20,641 travellers in 160 round trips over the past year. The service is operated by Subham Ferry, a subsidiary of Subham Group, using the vessel Sivagangai. Chairperson Sundarraj Ponnusamy said passenger numbers have grown steadily, boosting tourism, trade, and cultural ties between the two countries. In its first year, 10,825 passengers sailed from Nagapattinam to KKS and 9,816 from KKS to Nagapattinam. The highest single-day bookings were on Aug 13, when 152 people travelled from India, and on Oct 29, 2024, when 141 passengers came from Sri Lanka. On Saturday, Subham Ferry and the crew marked the start of the second year by distributing sweets and souvenirs to passengers at Nagapattinam Port. The company has announced a special package for students, offering a three-day tour in India or Sri Lanka along with a round-trip ticket for ₹9,999. The Nagapattinam–KKS link was relaunched in Oct 2023 after a 40-year gap, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagging off the service virtually. Initially run briefly by the Shipping Corporation of India, it was taken over by Subham Group in Aug 2024. The Sivagangai resumed operations in February this year after a short suspension. With passenger demand rising, the ferry now operates six days a week, up from three. "We aim to increase trips to over 200 next year and expect passenger numbers to cross 30,000," Ponnusamy said. Delhi's 25-Year Wait For Western Ring Road Ends: 75-Km UER-II Expressway To Cut Travel Time, Link Airport
Last Updated: The final Alipur-Dichaon Kalan stretch, along with spurs to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, will be inaugurated by PM Modi on Sunday Conceived in the year 2000, Delhi's long wait for the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II)—commonly called the Western Ring Road—will finally end on Sunday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating its remaining sections. Initially planned by the DDA and later handed to the NHAI in 2018, the 75-km project has faced repeated delays. Now, after nearly 25 years, the entire stretch will become operational. The project has faced repeated delays due to land acquisition hurdles, cost escalations, and shifting responsibility between agencies before finally reaching completion. By linking NH-44, NH-09, and the Dwarka Expressway, UER-II allows traffic headed towards Sonipat, Panipat, Chandigarh, Punjab, and J&K to bypass chronic choke points like Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and the city's Ring Roads. Along with the Dwarka Expressway also being inaugurated on Sunday, the UER-II will facilitate airport connectivity for people from north Delhi, west Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab. Together, these new stretches are expected to reduce travel time from Noida to IGI Airport to just 20 minutes. 'The project UER-II was conceptualised by DDA as part of the Delhi Master Plan as the third Ring Road of Delhi. The project got stuck due to various hurdles/challenges. On request of DDA, NHAI declared UER-II as a national highway (NH). UER-II is developed in five packages with a total length of 75.71 km and capital cost of Rs 6,445 crore. A total of 54.21 km of UER-II falls in Delhi and 21.50 km in Haryana," an official from NHAI told News18. What Is Being Inaugurated A 10-km section between Nangloi and Dwarka was opened in March 2024. On Sunday, the final Alipur-Dichaon Kalan stretch, along with spurs to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, is being inaugurated. The total cost of the new section is Rs 5,580 crore. The spurs to Sonipat Bypass and Bahadurgarh bypass are four-lane access-controlled highways, while the main alignment is a six-lane road. Western Ring Road Route Starting from NH-44 and terminating at Dwarka Sector 24, the UER-II is built in five packages—three main packages totalling 40 km between Alipur and Dwarka, including the already operational Nangloi-Dwarka link. The fourth package, NH-344P, is a 30 km spur to Sonipat, starting from Bawana Industrial Area. It will decongest the existing NH-44 and provide connectivity from Delhi to KMPE and the Delhi-Katra Expressway (through KMPE). The last and fifth package is a spur to the Bahadurgarh bypass starting from Village Dichaon Kalan. The seven km NH-344N will decongest the existing NH-09 in Delhi and provide connectivity to Eastern Haryana—the Rohtak/Bahadurgarh area in NCR—with southwest Delhi. Engineering & Sustainability Features Built at a capital cost of Rs 6,445 crore, the entire UER-II length includes six multi-level interchanges, 27 flyovers, 11 underpasses, 2 road overbridges, 31 bus bays, and over 110 km of service roads. To cross the Mungeshpur Drain, the highway has a 2-km elevated stretch supported on 32 portals without disturbing the waterway. Drug Destruction Up 132%, Seizures Up 104% In Tripura: Chief minister
Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha on Friday said police and security agencies have been directed to take strict action against those involved in drug smuggling. "The number of drugs destroyed has increased by 132% compared to last year. The amount of drug seizures has increased by 104%. Parents should be more vigilant and aware against drugs. The way Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking the country forward, we are also trying to move forward," the Chief Minister said. "Along with boys, girls are also getting addicted to drugs. The state government is continuing its fight against this. Various security agencies, including the police, are conducting operations against drugs," he added. "Efforts are being made to catch the drug kingpin. The police and other agencies have been instructed not to let anyone associated with drugs go free. A zero-tolerance policy has been adopted in the fight against drugs. Work is being done in that way," he further stated. Dr Saha was speaking while inaugurating a voluntary blood donation camp organised by Aurobindo Sangha at AD Nagar Higher Secondary School grounds in Agartala. "We can donate clothes, money, food, education, etc, but blood donation is a donation that cannot be bought from the market for money. Blood donation brings a divine feeling. Others can also be motivated through this social activity. We are many steps ahead of other states in the country in blood donation. Out of 100 people, 15 have negative blood group. Therefore, it is important to maintain an adequate stock of negative blood," he said. Dr Saha also said that the Aurobindo Sangha has organized various activities from August 1 to August 15 on the occasion of its foundation day and Independence Day. As part of this, responding to the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it has organized the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam program. Speaking on further on the issue of drugs, the Chief Minister said everything cannot be solved in a single day, pointing out that it is not possible to undo the atmosphere created by the policies of the Communists and Congress over the last 35 years, along with another five years. "It needs a lot of time. Still, we want to build a beautiful state. India has now reached the fourth place in terms of economy, from the 11th place earlier. Tripura is also in the second-highest position among North Eastern states in terms of GSDP and per capita income," he added.
