Centre announces Rs 1,490 support price for Totapuri mango farmers

Vijayawada: In a much-needed boost for Totapuri mango farmers of Andhra Pradesh, the central govt has announced a support price of 1,490 per quintal. The price support will be shared equally by the Centre and the Andhra Pradesh govt in a 50:50 ratio, with the amount directly deposited into farmers' bank accounts. The move comes as a major relief to mango growers who were struggling due to a price crash caused by a bumper harvest. With mango pulp factories offering low prices, farmers were unable to recover their costs. In response, state agriculture minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu undertook an extensive tour of Chittoor district, met farmers and factory representatives, and swiftly raised the issue with chief minister Chandrababu Naidu. Acting promptly, Naidu directed that mangoes be procured at 8 per kg by pulp factories, and the govt would provide a 4/kg subsidy, ensuring farmers received a total of 12 per kg. Taking it further, minister Atchannaidu visited Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Delhi to seek support. His efforts bore fruit with the Centre's announcement on Tuesday. "This is a historic step. No other state has given such a high subsidy. We've ensured that farmers are not pushed into losses," said Atchannaidu, thanking the CM and the Union govt for their timely support. Totapuri mango farmers have expressed gratitude to the state govt, calling the move a lifeline in a tough year.

People faced problems during YSRCP' rule

Visakhapatnam: Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu said that the state's economic situation was very miserable under the previous government's tenure and that it's their responsibility to bring it back to normal. Speaking at a door-to-door programme 'suparipalanalo tholi adugu' organised to mark the completion of a year of the coalition government, the minister said that people who were fed up of the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's rule gave the largest majority to the alliance. He campaigned at Gurrampalem under the Pendurthi constituency and enquired about the implementation of Super Six schemes by the state governmen. Speaking at the public meeting held later, the minister said that Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu is organising the 'suparipalanalo tholi adugu' programme with an aim to understand the problems of the people at the ground level and resolving them. He alleged that people faced a lot of problems due to Jagan Mohan Reddy between 2019 and 2024 as he had no political experience. The Agriculture Minister stated that all the systems in the state were weakened by the YSRCP and Jagan Mohan Reddy incurred debts to the tune of Rs 12 lakh crore and destroyed the economy. Despite the challenges, the NDA government is implementing Super Six as promised, he underlined. The minister said that while the pension was increased by Rs 250 per year during the YSRCP government, it was increased by Rs 1,000 for beneficiaries at once as soon as the NDA government came to power. Even as the government does not have funds to implement the free bus scheme, the minister said, the scheme will come into force from August.

Bail out Chittoor mango ryots from crisis: Agriculture Minister Atchannaidu to Centre

VIJAYAWADA: Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu met Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi on Tuesday, urging the Centre to extend support to farmers cultivating Totapuri variety mangoes in Chittoor district. Accompanied by Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu, he discussed the challenges faced by farmers in AP, and sought comprehensive assistance for the development of agricultural sector. He highlighted the plight of Totapuri mango farmers, who are facing significant losses due to a sharp decline in prices. With market prices dropping below Rs 8 per kg, he emphasised the need for government intervention to ensure a minimum support price of Rs 12 under the Price Deficiency Payment (PDP) system within the Market Intervention Scheme. He informed the Union Minister that approximately 6.5 lakh metric tonnes of Totapuri mango produce need to be procured to stabilise the market. Under the proposed plan, pulp units and traders will pay Rs 8 per kg, while the State government is prepared to bear Rs 4, amounting to Rs 260 crore, to support farmers. Atchannaidu urged the Centre to provide matching funds to cover the remaining cost, estimating a total expenditure of Rs 780 crore, with Rs 520 crore contributed by units and traders. He stressed that this financial assistance is critical to protect farmers from losses caused by excess production, and high inventory levels in pulp units. He proposed that the Centre offer a special package similar to Uttar Pradesh's Bundelkhand region to support farmers in Rayalaseema, Prakasam, and North Coastal Andhra. He also advocated for the establishment of a chilli board in Guntur, a cashew board in Srikakulam, and a mango board in Chittoor to boost farmers' income. Furthermore, he reiterated the need for a Central Agricultural University in Srikakulam, as mandated by the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014. 'Develop fisheries in Srikakulam district' The Agriculture Minister also urged Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh to provide enhanced support for the fisheries development in Srikakulam district.
