Texas A&M tight end preview: A&M has many new faces in the room, who will rise to the top?
The 2025 football season is coming up fast, and there's plenty of excitement surrounding year two under Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko. The tight end position has a lot of new faces but packed with talent and experience. Due to graduation and transfers, the Aggie coaching staff had to quickly bring in several tight ends to fill the depth chart. The only returning scholarship TE was Theo Melin Ohrstrom, who flashed at times last season but has areas he needs to improve. The addition of a few transfers and freshmen, Kiotti Armstrong, it's a deep room with a lot to prove. Depth Chart Snapshot Player Spotlight Freshmen Class: Kiotti Armstrong (likely to see the field) Scheme Fit & Outlook Collin Klein's offense leans on motion, misdirection, and hybrid personnel. The tight end room must deliver: Expect Niblack and Ohrstrom to rotate heavily, with Riley emerging in red zone and Boerkircher anchoring depth. Usage may spike in short-yardage and play-action packages, especially with Marcel Reed settling in as QB1. Final Thoughts Texas A&M's tight end room is rebuilt, not reloaded. Niblack brings flash, Ohrstrom brings familiarity, and Riley brings intrigue. It's a group with upside, but also uncertainty. If blocking improves and chemistry clicks, this unit could quietly become a strength in Elko's second season. Texas A&M freshman TE is already turning heads this preseason
Texas A&M's 2025 tight end rotation is much deeper compared to last season, and while junior Theo Melin Öhrström is the only returning player from the 2024 rotation, transfers Micah Riley, Nate Boerkircher, and Amari Niblack bring a blend of blocking and receiving that will help protect and increase starting quarterback Marcel Reed's production through the air. During the first two preseason practices this week, Niblack has stood out due to his speed and quickness in the seam. Still, freshman tight end Kiotti Armstrong, who is currently listed at 6'6" and 265 pounds, has become one of the more intriguing players on the roster and could be in line to see the field as soon as the 2025 season opener vs. UTSA. On Thursday, during basic blocking drills, Armstrong's strength and defensive line-like build were on full display. If his high school film tells us anything, the Jasper, Texas native is already an above-average receiver who can gain chunk yards after the catch, which is impressive given his size. During his time at Jasper HS, Armstrong reeled in 68 receptions for 1,026 yards and 18 touchdowns, including 683 yards and seven touchdowns during his 2024 senior season. Looking back at Texas A&M's most recent success with tight ends in the passing game, it last came during the 2021 season when Jalen Wydermeyer led the Aggies with 515 yards, while the memorable 2018 season featured one-year Kansas transfer TE Jace Sterberger netting a team-high 832 yards and 10 touchdowns. Armstrong is two inches taller than both players while possessing an NFL-level build. "The sky is the limit" is highly overused, but in Armstrong's case, coach Mike Elko and OC Collin Klein may have found the next Jace Sternberger, but he'll be with the program for more than one season. 12 Texas A&M 2025 signees ranked in final Top 247 rankings
Texas A&M's 2025 recruiting class could end up being one of the more impactful cycles over the next three seasons, as coach Mike Elko and his staff, especially O-line coach Adam Cushing, understand that a handful of these commits will see the field as soon as next season. On Wednesday, On3's final 2025 industry rankings saw the Aggies finish with the 6th-ranked class. Seven SEC programs landed within the top 10 of the standings, with the Texas Longhorns taking the top spot after two consecutive College Football Playoff appearances. Twelve of the Aggies' 25 signees made 247Sports' Top247 final rankings regarding individual player rankings. Here is where every signee rose or fell in the Top 247 rankings: 141-158: Four-star EDGE Marco Jones 290-142: Four-star IOL Nelson McGuire 112-129: Four-star LB Noah Mikhail 69-127: Four-star CB Adonyss Currie 187-124: Four-star WR Kelshaun Johnson 126-113: Four-star CB Jamar Beal-Goines 288-83: Four-star S Rashad Johnson 89-62: Four-star DL DJ Sanders 435-58: Four-star DL Chace Sims 114-41: Four-star TE Kiotti Armstrong 19-28: Five-star WR Jerome Myles 28-26: Four-star OT Lamont Rogers On paper, defensive lineman Chace Sims looks like a player who should immediately see the field along with wide receiver Jerome Myles, tight end Kiotti Armstrong, and offensive tackle Lamong Rogers. Sims's rise from 435 to 58 is an incredible feat, as the Richmond (TX) native possesses the size, athleticism, and production to make an impact in what should be a talented D-line rotation.
