Violin used in Titanic movie sells for £54,000
A violin which featured in James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster Titanic has sold for £54,000 at an auction in Wiltshire of memorabilia relating to the 1912 shipwreck. The violin was played by the musician and actor Jonathan Evans-Jones, who played band leader Wallace Hartley in the film. It is seen several times in the film, including during the scene in which the band play the hymn Nearer My God to Thee in an attempt to calm passengers as the ship sinks. As they conclude, Hartley says: 'Gentlemen, it has been a privilege playing with you tonight.' All of the musicians onboard the Titanic were among the 1,500 people who lost their lives when the ship sank in the Atlantic ocean after hitting an iceberg. In 2013, Evans-Jones sold the violin at auction to a private collector, who put it up for sale with Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneers. Other lots sold on Sunday include a letter written by one of the most well-known survivors of the Titanic disaster, Colonel Archibald Gracie, which sold for £300,000, and a rare Titanic manifest sheet and inspection card. Cameron's multi-Oscar-winning film starred Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as passengers who meet and fall in love on the voyage, despite a class divide. Speaking on the Graham Norton Show to promote her Lee Miller biopic last year, Winslet said she was surprised to see Evans-Jones again when watching the soundtrack to the film – which she also produced – being recorded. 'I was looking through the glass into the stage where all the musicians are,' she said. 'Huge, 120-piece orchestra. And I'm looking at this violinist and I thought, 'I know that face.' And then the day goes on, and a few of the musicians start going, 'It's [him]!' and they're sort of pointing at him. 'I'm thinking, 'Am I related to this person? Who is this person?' And at the end of the day, I thought, 'OK, I've got to go in.' So I went in, and he went, 'Kate, it's me!' You know when the Titanic is going down, and the violinist stands up, and he goes, 'Come on, lads,' and he starts playing? It was that guy! I'm like, 'It's you!' It was wonderful.' Evans-Jones's movie credits also include No Time to Die, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Wicked.

Some Vegans Were Harmed in the Watching of This Movie
Inside a dark theater in Midtown Manhattan, Allison McCulloch watched 'Kraven the Hunter,' an origin story for the obscure Spider-Man villain, while jotting notes on a white piece of paper smaller than a Post-it. Fur clothing. Taxidermied animals. Characters eating steak. McCulloch is the Roger Ebert of vegans, a dedicated cinephile who cares as much as anyone about acting and cinematography — and more than almost anyone about onscreen portrayals of dairy, poultry and beef. In the short reviews she writes for the app Letterboxd, she includes her overall critique as well as 'vegan alerts,' flagging signs of animal products in a one-woman quest to highlight animal welfare onscreen, even in details most viewers would overlook. 'People might think a glass of milk is innocuous,' she said. 'It's not. It's full of violence.' McCulloch has documented her opinion on 24,082 movies on her Letterboxd account, putting her in the top 100 out of the app's more than 18 million members. Movies starring animals are almost a lock for vegan-friendly ratings, with films like 'Flow' and 'Kung Fu Panda 4' getting four stars. 'Kraven the Hunter,' about a criminal-tracking vigilante played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, flopped by traditional measures ('incomprehensible plotting and dodgy one-liners,' Robert Daniels wrote in The New York Times). But it worked on some level for McCulloch, who was surprised by how it framed Kraven as a kind of conservationist who shares a supernatural connection with the creatures he encounters, and hunts criminals instead. She even gave the movie one 'vegan point' for Kraven's decision to not shoot a lion. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Tenacious D to release cover of REO Speedwagon's Keep On Loving You
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Tenacious D have announced their first new music since going on hiatus in 2024. The comedy rock duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass will appear on a new compilation album benefiting victims of the recent Los Angeles wildfires, contributing a cover of REO Speedwagon's Keep On Loving You. The album, Good Music To Lift Los Angeles, is also set to feature previously-unreleased recordings from Death Cab For Cutie, Chelsea Wolfe, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, R.E.M., Health, The Armed and others. It will be available on the Bandcamp page of record label Good Music for 24 hours from 12:01am Pacific time on Friday, February 7. Proceeds will go to the L.A. Regional Food Bank and California Community Foundation's Wildfire Fund. Keep On Loving You will be the second Tenacious D cover to come out in the last 12 months, following their rendition of Britney Spears' …Baby One More Time, which appeared on the soundtrack to Black's film Kung Fu Panda 4. The band also released an original track, Video Games, in 2023 and seemed to be gearing up for a new album. However, all of their plans, including all announced tour dates, were cancelled in July, after Gass told a joke onstage about the assassination attempt against then-former US president Donald Trump the previous day. Gass made the seemingly off-the-cuff comment during the Sydney stop of Tenacious D's Australia and New Zealand tour. When Black presented his bandmate with a cake for his 64th birthday and told him to make a wish, he said into his microphone, 'Don't miss Trump next time.' In response to Gass's quip, Australian senator Ralph Babet called for Tenacious D to be deported from the country. Black issued a statement on Instagram, saying he was 'blindsided' by Gass' comment and putting the band on ice. Gass later issued a now-deleted written apology. In August, Black offered an update on the status of Tenacious D to Variety. He confirmed the band will return later down the line and that he and Gass remain friends, but that they 'need to take a break'. It's unclear when Tenacious D recorded their new cover, but they have played it multiple times live over the years. Watch one performance below. Good Music To Lift Los Angeles won't be the only wildfire charity benefit album to drop this week. Another compilation – Los Angeles Rising, featuring Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker and others – is now available to download via Bandcamp.
