Parnaik flags off Yano's 7-summit expedition
1 2 Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh governor KT Parnaik flagged off mountaineer Kabak Yano's seven-summit expedition from the Raj Bhavan here on Monday. Parnaik handed over the ceremonial ice axe with flags of India and the logo of Arunachal Pradesh to Yano in the presence of state sports minister Kento Jini. He also presented financial assistance for her mission, an official statement from the Raj Bhavan said. He said very few across the world have taken on the formidable challenge of the seven-summit mountaineering expedition, a mission to conquer the highest peaks on all seven continents. Extending best wishes, Parnaik said Yano carries with her the blessings of the people of Arunachal Pradesh, the dreams of a new generation, and the spirit of a state that is resilient, peaceful, and unstoppable. He urged her to show the world the strength, grace, and tenacity of a daughter of Arunachal. In a special gesture of appreciation for her earlier feat of scaling Mount Everest, the governor presented Yano with the 'Land of Rising Sun' plaque, honouring her as a beacon of inspiration for the entire state. Sports minister Jini, in his remarks, highlighted the dedicated efforts of the state govt to promote sports and games, with a special focus on adventure sports.

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Itanagar, Jul 28 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) K T Parnaik on Monday flagged off celebrated woman Everester Kabak Yano's ambitious seven-summit mountaineering expedition, a mission to scale the highest peaks on all seven continents. The flag-off ceremony was held at Raj Bhavan as Yano embarked on one of the most formidable challenges in global mountaineering. In a symbolic gesture, Parnaik handed over a ceremonial ice axe bearing the Indian Tricolour and the Arunachal Pradesh state emblem to Yano, in the presence of state Sports Minister Kento Jini, who also extended financial support to support her mission. Describing the event as a celebration of courage and conviction, Parnaik lauded Yano's determination, calling her journey a representation of the indomitable spirit that dares to dream beyond boundaries. He noted that only a few people across the world have attempted the seven-summit expedition, and praised Yano for her bold commitment to join that elite league. 'Yano carries with her the blessings of the people of Arunachal, the dreams of a new generation, and the resilient, peaceful, and unstoppable spirit of our state," the governor said. He urged her to showcase to the world the strength, grace, and tenacity of a daughter of Arunachal. In a tribute to her earlier feat of summiting Mount Everest on May 21 last year, the governor presented her with the 'Land of Rising Sun' plaque, recognising her as a beacon of inspiration for the entire state. Yano is the fifth woman from the state and the first from the Nyishi community to summit Mount Everest. Sports Minister Kento Jini, in his address, commended the state government's efforts in promoting sports, particularly adventure sports, and highlighted the various incentives and policies designed to support athletes. He emphasised the government's progressive reservation policies for sportspersons, which create greater access to education and employment for talented youth. To inspire future generations, the governor had specially invited students from the Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy, cadets from the 1st Arunachal Pradesh NCC Battalion, and members of the Bharat Scouts and Guides to attend the ceremony. Also present at the occasion were Sports and Youth Affairs secretary Abu Tayeng, Sports director Tadar Apa, and other dignitaries, who extended their support and encouragement to Kabak Yano. Krishna Chowlu conferred ‘Land of Rising Sun' plaque

Chowlu, scientist in-charge of the Botanical Survey of India, Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre, was conferred the recognition for her discovery and documenting the unique orchid species of the state. The governor lauded Chowlu's tireless efforts and scientific spirit in unveiling the rich floral diversity of the state, especially her remarkable work in identifying rare and exclusive orchid species, an official statement from the Raj Bhavan said. Highlighting the exceptional significance of the exquisite orchids of the state, he said these vibrant and delicate blooms are not just beautiful but they are living symbols of the state's pristine natural heritage and ecological richness. Parnaik added that Arunachal holds a special place in India's biodiversity map, with nearly 50 orchid species found nowhere else in the world. These rare species, he noted, reflect the untouched and pure environment of the region, and their preservation and study are of great value to both scientific research and eco-tourism. Emphasising the importance of exploring, conserving, and promoting orchids, he urged educational institutions to take the lead in this initiative. "Engaging students in such efforts would not only deepen their understanding of biodiversity but also foster a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the rich natural heritage of their region," he said. Chowlu added that there are 650 species of orchids in the state, which is the highest in India. Fifty orchids are exclusively found in Arunachal Pradesh. A specialist in angiosperm taxonomy with a focus on the orchidaceae family, she is renowned for her contributions to plant discovery in the state. She discovered Impatiens dorjeekhanduii in Tawang (2017), named in honour of former CM Dorjee Khandu, and more recently identified a unique leafless orchid, Gastrodia lohitensis, in Lohit district (2024), which survives without sunlight. On the occasion, Chowlu presented her book, Orchids of Arunachal Pradesh, to the governor.
