Langkawi airport sees 10pct passenger growth in first quarter

LANGKAWI: The Langkawi International Airport (LIA) recorded 666,241 passenger movements in the first quarter of this year, marking a nearly 10 per cent jump compared to the same period last year. Malaysia Airports managing director, Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani, said the achievement is a positive indicator that LIA is on the right track to securing international recognition for the fifth time this year. "LTAL recorded 666,241 passenger movements from January to March this year, reflecting a rise of nearly 10 per cent compared to 607,306 passengers in the same period last year. "This figure signals healthy growth and momentum following LIA's previous success in winning the Best Airport in Asia-Pacific Award (2–5 million passengers' category) for four consecutive years since 2021. "This award is part of the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards Programme by Airports Council International (ACI)," he said during a high-tea event here today. For the record, LIA received the award in 2021, 2022, 2023, and most recently in March last year. Mohd Izani added that the airport had once recorded three million passengers annually before the Covid-19 pandemic and is now showing signs of recovery, thanks to growth in both domestic and international tourism. "This international recognition is not just a success story, but a reflection of consistency, pride, and commitment in ensuring every passenger's journey is a meaningful experience," he said. He also expressed appreciation for the contributions of 23 Malaysia Airports staff stationed at LIA, whose dedication has helped the organisation achieve excellence in service at a global level. "Collective effort and strong cooperation among staff members are crucial in maintaining passenger satisfaction, operational efficiency, and high service quality," he added.

LANGKAWI, Malaysia, May 20 (Xinhua) -- The 17th edition of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) kicked off here on Tuesday, with defense and associated companies from around the globe eyeing a higher profile in Asia's defense sector. Organized biennially, the exhibition features 860 exhibitors representing various sectors in maritime and aerospace. They will be joined by 140 delegates from 46 countries and regions, including heads of military, enforcement agencies and other government officials, according to the organizer. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and members of his cabinet, including both deputy ministers Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Fadillah Yusof, and Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin, witnessed the opening ceremony, which featured an aerial demonstration by aircraft of the Royal Malaysian Air Force. According to Khaled, among this edition's highlights are two aerobatic teams from Indonesia and Russia, who will showcase their skills at aerial maneuvers as part of the event. Additionally, some 43 fighter jets and other aircraft from the participating countries will perform aerial displays at the Langkawi International Airport, while 31 warships and maritime assets, including 12 vessels from several participating nations, will be on display. In a speech at the opening ceremony late on Monday, Anwar said the exhibition reflects the Malaysia's commitment to defense preparedness, regional peace, and strategic collaboration amid rapidly evolving global security challenges. Anwar added that the exhibition is not just about military displays, it's about building partnerships, supporting local industries, and keeping pace with innovation for national and regional security. For his part, Khaled said this year's edition would feature a strong emphasis on innovation and the development of indigenous defense technologies, with several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) to be signed during the event. "These MoUs include plans to initiate defense satellite development programs, integrate artificial intelligence into defense applications, and establish a national center of excellence in aviation," he told a press briefing.

LANGKAWI — The location of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA), here will be expanded to accommodate more participation from international companies. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the exhibition area, especially at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC), is currently becoming crowded and unable to accommodate more participants. He told reporters that after the opening ceremony of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Langkawi Division Office, here yesterday. Commenting further, he said that the expansion of the exhibition area is expected to also include the Langkawi International Airport (LIA). However, there is no specific period allocated for the matter but he hopes the relevant parties, including the Ministry of Finance, can submit a report on the matter within two weeks. 'It is good for now, the response is good, but just now when we were given a briefing, there were several countries that wanted to participate, but we couldn't accommodate them,' he said. Earlier, during his speech at the event, Anwar said the need to expand the LIMA exhibition area is seen as significant in making the event bigger and even more impressive in the future. Meanwhile, Anwar said the issue related to the ferry service to Langkawi would be brought to the Cabinet for discussion to improve the infrastructure in line with Langkawi's development as a tourist destination. 'That is why I have asked that the Minister of Finance II (Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan) be the co-chairman of the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) so that there is a boost to development in Langkawi,' he said. — BERNAMA
