LANGKAWI, June 17 (Bernama) -- Education ministers from ASEAN member states and Timor-Leste, along with their respective delegations, arrived at the Langkawi International Airport today to attend the ASEAN Ministers of Education and Higher Education Roundtables (#EduRoundtables2025).
The delegations, who began arriving as early as 10.30 am, were received by senior officials from the Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and the organising secretariat.
Among those who arrived are Timor-Leste Minister of Higher Education, Science and Culture José Honório da Costa Pereira Jerónimo, Brunei's Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Romaizah Md Salleh and Vietnam's Director-General of the International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Education and Training, Associate Professor Dr Nguyen Thu Thuy.
Also present were Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community San Lwin and Myanmar's Director-General of the Monitoring and Evaluation Department, Ministry of Education, Dr Chaw Chaw Sein.
Throughout the three-day programme, the ministers and senior officials are expected to deliberate on a new framework that will guide the region's educational direction moving forward.
In addition to the closed-door ASEAN Ministers of Education Roundtable session on June 19, Malaysia's MOE will host the ASEAN Forum on Education on June 18 with the same theme, 'Accelerating Innovative Strategies: Mitigating Out-of-School Children and Youth (OOSCY) Challenges.'
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek is scheduled to deliver her remarks on Thursday.
Besides that, the Langkawi Joint Statement on OOSCY: Accelerating Innovative Strategies: Mitigating OOSCY Challenges is envisioned as a key document that reaffirms the commitment of ASEAN Member States to accelerate efforts in reducing the number of OOSCY, particularly as the grouping approaches the 10-year milestone of the ASEAN Declaration on Strengthening OOSCY.
The Statement aims to address critical challenges that have hindered progress towards inclusive education and to provide a guiding framework for advancing collective action through innovative and adaptive strategies.

High-level committee set up to oversee cross-ministry rural development
KUALA LUMPUR: A high-level committee (HLC) on rural development has been set up to coordinate efforts across ministries to address rural-urban development challenges, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister, who chaired the inaugural HLC meeting in Parliament, said the committee will be the apex strategic platform to align rural development policies and programmes. 'The current development of rural areas is facing increasingly complex challenges from overlapping functions between ministries and agencies to resource constraints and siloed implementation,' Zahid said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 14) The HLC, which will convene at least twice a year, is supported by six working committees focusing on key areas: education, entrepreneurship, rural economy, digitalisation, rural tourism, and infrastructure. Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said the initiative is in line with the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which emphasises integrated governance to reduce duplication, optimise resources, and speed up outcomes. He also cited a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report that stated that no Asean country is on track to fully achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to rural development by 2030 without better coordination in infrastructure, workforce, human capital, and poverty reduction efforts. "Key areas discussed during the HLC meeting included improving access to rural schools, enhancing rural tourism promotion, strengthening support for senior citizens and special needs groups, and upgrading rural healthcare infrastructure," he said. Several cross-ministry initiatives are already in motion, including the UP_TVET, a centralised application system for vocational and technical training and Inap Desa 2026, aimed at positioning homestays as key attractions during Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Zahid said the government intended to curb rural-urban migration by creating more opportunities in rural areas, nurturing rural tech entrepreneurs, and enhancing the competitiveness of the rural tourism sector. 'Rural development is not just about building physical infrastructure. It's about building the future and unlocking the potential of our people,' he said. 'With a whole-of-government approach, I am confident this HLC will help create a thriving, sustainable rural ecosystem that contributes significantly to national progress,' he added.

#JusticeForZara rally to go ahead amid fresh probe into schoolgirl's death
KOTA KINABALU: The Himpunan Mega Solidariti #JusticeForZara rally will proceed as planned on Saturday, despite the ongoing reinvestigation into the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir. Event coordinator Mhd Asisal said the gathering, expected to draw at least 10,000 participants, would take place at the Kota Kinabalu City Hall compound from 2pm. He added that the rally would present six demands, the first being a transparent and open inquest with daily updates accessible to the media. "All inquest documents and evidence must be made available to the family and their legal representatives. Secondly, there should be an independent monitoring panel made up of non-governmental organisations, lawyers, parents and former judges to oversee the investigation process and ensure transparency," he told the New Straits Times. Asisal said that action must be taken against those who failed to perform their duties or demonstrated incompetence, with disciplinary measures for negligence announced within 30 days. Other demands include requiring the Education Ministry to disclose the latest standard operating procedures (SOP) for reforming anti-bullying protocols, introducing comprehensive anti-bullying measures, and ensuring protection for witnesses and students involved in bullying cases. Meanwhile, Suara Mahasiswa UMS activist Muhamad Fadhil Muhamad Kasim said the public's decision to rally was driven by a lack of trust in the system, an issue that prompted the involvement of Bukit Aman police, the exhumation of Zara's body, and calls for an inquest to reinvestigate the case. "The people's anger stems from integrity and professionalism issues, particularly the non-compliance with SOP by the Sabah police. The police must take responsibility for their negligence, as public confidence in their handling of criminal cases is waning. "Speculation is damaging, but it arises because the authorities failed to conduct a thorough investigation. The delay in the probe has heightened concerns not only among university students but also in rural communities, where many have school-going children and siblings," he said. Fadhil also criticised politicians for only engaging with Zara's family and speaking out after the case had dragged on for some time. Zara, 13, was found unconscious at her dormitory in SMKA Tunku Mustapha, Papar, on July 16, and was pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here.
