Ryan Coogler's Post-‘Sinners' Project Sounds Amazing

Sinners It's hard to even keep track of what Sinners has achieved since its opening weekend debut. One of the best-scored movies in Rotten Tomatoes history, the only horror movie to have an A Cinemascore in 35 years, and the best opening for a wholly original movie in recent memory. So the question, obviously, is what director Ryan Coogler is going to do next, and it's not a sequel. It's probably not something you'd guess in a thousand tries. Coogler has been working on an X-Files reboot for a while, and will now turn his attention back to that project in the wake of Sinners. 'I've been excited about that for a long time and I'm fired up to get back to it,' Coogler said on Last Podcast on the Left and says it's 'immediately next' for him. 'Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f***ing scary.' So yes, it's a show, not a movie. Coogler has an overall deal with Disney, meaning this would likely air on Hulu/Disney Plus, of all places. The show previously ran for nine seasons (and a number of movies) before a two season revival back in 2016. What's this going to be? It's not fully clear yet, but it does not seem like a reboot recasting Mulder and Scully. Coogler actually wants Gillian Anderson back, specifically. (Photo by Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic) 'She's incredible and fingers crossed there. We're going to try to make something really great, bro, and make something for the real 'X-Files' fans and maybe find some new ones.' He says she seemed open to it but at the time, was filming Tron: Ares. If I had to guess, this will almost certainly work out with Coogler working on this project. Anderson has been in a number of high profile projects over the last few decades, ranging from Sex Education to The Crown to American Gods to Hannibal and more. As for Mulder, David Duchovny, he's not mentioned in these conversations, for whatever reason. He's still been working, but in perhaps lower profile projects than her. It goes without saying that whatever Coogler produces here is likely going to be incredible. The man has not made a bad movie, and in fact, has now made one of the best movies in years, it seems like. This is a new foray into a full-on TV show, but I doubt that makes a difference. My only question is…who is Michael B. Jordan going to play? Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Bluesky Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

The X-Files fans convinced TV reboot 'could fix show's biggest mistake'

Ryan Coogler has left the X-Files fans seriously pumped after shedding light on his 'really f**king scary' reboot ideas. Fresh from directing horror film Sinners, with Michael B Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, the filmmaker is set to turn his attention to reviving the iconic 90s sci-fi series. The original program ran for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002, following FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) – it also spanned two movies and a short-lived revival in 2016, which ended after two years. The 38-year-old previously sent us all into a spin when he revealed he would be developing a new reboot in 2023, with series creator Chris Carter announcing that he was not involved last year. In a new appearance on Last Podcast on the Left, the director finally shared a much-needed update on the project, declaring he has been 'fired up' to get back to work on it. 'I'm working on X-Files,' he confirmed. 'That's what's immediately next. So, I've been excited about that for a long time, and I'm fired up to get back to it, and some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f**king scary. Little else is known about the reboot or when we can expect it, but 'immediately next' sounds like viewers won't be waiting too long. Ryan also suggested that the OG cast could be involved, sharing that he has 'spoken to' Gillian about his ideas for the project. 'I've spoken to the great Gillian,' he added. 'She's incredible. Fingers crossed there. I can't wait to see her. She's in Tron [Ares]. I just seen a trailer for that. When I spoke to her, she was finishing that up. 'But we're going to try to make something really great, and really be something for the real X-Files fans. And maybe find some new ones.' Unsurprisingly, fans were thrilled by the update and flocked to Reddit to unpack the director's comments, sharing their hopes that Ryan will correct the mistakes made with Scully's arc in the later seasons – something Gillian publicly spoke out against. A-hthy penned: 'Oh wow. I'm so down for this. I understand Gillian wasn't happy with the end of s11, they absolutely ruined Scully's character!! It was an insult. 'I would be soooo excited to see her come back [sic].' 'Oh hell yeah! A proper follow up (by someone who is not Chris Carter) is such a better idea than full on reboot,' Special-Chipmunk7127 agreed. 'I trust Coogler with this, with the tear he's been on he could do anything he wants and the fact he's choosing this means he's got to have a pretty solid concept and something worth saying with it,' Helidokter wrote. As Forcefivepod added: 'There are only a few people who could get me excited for an X-Files reboot. Coogler is one of them.' This won't be the first X Files reboot as the series was revived back in 2016, taking place 14 years after season nine. David and Gillian returned, and were joined by Joel McHale, Lauren Ambrose, Robbie Amell and Aliza Vellani – however, the newer episodes were panned by fans and critics alike. Gillian, who also starred in The Crown and Sex Education, previously called out the changes made to her character – and her decision not to return after season 11 – while popping up in her co-star's Fail Better podcast. More Trending 'It felt like Scully's trajectory was no longer one of strength and agency,' she said, via AV Club. 'It felt like it was beholden to an old idea of what a woman is… 'Literally all she could talk about was William and finding William. That's literally a one-track song.' View More » 'I wasn't really enjoying the direction that it was heading,' she added. 'And I didn't have a voice in it. And so I felt like I needed to move on to something where I might have more of a voice.' Got a story? X Files director Ryan Coogler reveals he's spoken to Gillian Anderson about reboot

Ryan Coogler, director of the forthcoming X Files reboot, has confirmed he has spoken to Gillian Anderson, the show's original lead. The 38-year-old Black Panther director has just celebrated the release of his new horror film, Sinners, starring Michael B Jordan. Coogler said he was looking forward to turning his attention back to the series, which is 'immediately next' on his slate. 'I've been excited about that for a long time and I'm fired up to get back to it,' he said on the Last Podcast on the Left. 'Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f***ing scary.' The original show ran for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002 (and two revived seasons in 2016), and followed FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they investigate paranormal phenomena. Coogler confirmed he had spoken with Anderson about the show as she was finishing off work on the forthcoming science-fiction movie, Tron: Ares. 'She's incredible and fingers crossed there,' he said. 'We're going to try to make something really great, bro, and make something for the real X-Files fans and maybe find some new ones.' News of the reboot was confirmed in 2023, although the show's creator, Chris Carter, had suggested at the time that Duchovny and Anderson would not return. Last year, Carter revealed that the show's producers had originally been hesitant to recruit Anderson, as she did not fit their idea of 'sexy'. She subsequently went on to become a firm fan favourite. Carter was asked 'Where is the sex appeal?' about The Crown actor. 'Even though Gillian's beautiful, she wasn't their idea of sexy,' he explained. 'First, because they didn't understand what I was trying to do with the show. And she was an unknown, so that never helps.' Get Apple TV+ for £2.99/month for 3 months Offer ends 24 April 2025. £2.99/month for first 3 months, then £8.99/month. Terms apply. Anderson was eventually cast as Agent Scully and the show's success ignited her acting career, which has seen her land roles in Netflix's The Crown, Sex Education, and the BBC drama series The Fall. She previously opened up about the network disagreeing with her casting. 'All these other actresses from the theatre community in New York were being flown in because I wasn't good enough for The X Files, ' she said on the NPR podcast Fresh Air. 'So I was auditioning suddenly with Jill Hennessy and Cynthia Nixon. Anyway, eventually I ended up getting the job.'
