The X-Files fans convinced TV reboot 'could fix show's biggest mistake'
Ryan Coogler has left the X-Files fans seriously pumped after shedding light on his 'really f**king scary' reboot ideas.
Fresh from directing horror film Sinners, with Michael B Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, the filmmaker is set to turn his attention to reviving the iconic 90s sci-fi series.
The original program ran for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002, following FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) – it also spanned two movies and a short-lived revival in 2016, which ended after two years.
The 38-year-old previously sent us all into a spin when he revealed he would be developing a new reboot in 2023, with series creator Chris Carter announcing that he was not involved last year.
In a new appearance on Last Podcast on the Left, the director finally shared a much-needed update on the project, declaring he has been 'fired up' to get back to work on it.
'I'm working on X-Files,' he confirmed. 'That's what's immediately next. So, I've been excited about that for a long time, and I'm fired up to get back to it, and some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f**king scary.
Little else is known about the reboot or when we can expect it, but 'immediately next' sounds like viewers won't be waiting too long.
Ryan also suggested that the OG cast could be involved, sharing that he has 'spoken to' Gillian about his ideas for the project.
'I've spoken to the great Gillian,' he added. 'She's incredible. Fingers crossed there. I can't wait to see her. She's in Tron [Ares]. I just seen a trailer for that. When I spoke to her, she was finishing that up.
'But we're going to try to make something really great, and really be something for the real X-Files fans. And maybe find some new ones.'
Unsurprisingly, fans were thrilled by the update and flocked to Reddit to unpack the director's comments, sharing their hopes that Ryan will correct the mistakes made with Scully's arc in the later seasons – something Gillian publicly spoke out against.
A-hthy penned: 'Oh wow. I'm so down for this. I understand Gillian wasn't happy with the end of s11, they absolutely ruined Scully's character!! It was an insult.
'I would be soooo excited to see her come back [sic].'
'Oh hell yeah! A proper follow up (by someone who is not Chris Carter) is such a better idea than full on reboot,' Special-Chipmunk7127 agreed.
'I trust Coogler with this, with the tear he's been on he could do anything he wants and the fact he's choosing this means he's got to have a pretty solid concept and something worth saying with it,' Helidokter wrote.
As Forcefivepod added: 'There are only a few people who could get me excited for an X-Files reboot. Coogler is one of them.'
This won't be the first X Files reboot as the series was revived back in 2016, taking place 14 years after season nine.
David and Gillian returned, and were joined by Joel McHale, Lauren Ambrose, Robbie Amell and Aliza Vellani – however, the newer episodes were panned by fans and critics alike.
Gillian, who also starred in The Crown and Sex Education, previously called out the changes made to her character – and her decision not to return after season 11 – while popping up in her co-star's Fail Better podcast. More Trending

Amazon Prime viewers urged to binge 'best show on TV' this weekend
The Exorcist was cancelled after just two seasons due to low ratings, but it still has a huge following of fans who have praised it as one of the best horror series on TV Amazon Prime Video subscribers are racing against time to devour what enthusiasts have dubbed "one of the best horror shows on television". The Exorcist, a familiar tale to those who relish in frights, was reborn as a television series in 2016. Drawing inspiration from William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel, the series was billed as "a modern reinvention" of the "propulsive, serialized, psychological thriller". Set within the universe of the iconic 1973 movie, it weaves a sequel narrative that nods to elements of the original story. Starring Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, Kurt Egyiawan, Hannah Kasulka, Geena Davis, and Alan Ruck, The Exorcist delves into the terror of a family under siege by supernatural forces. The plot thickens as a mother, plagued by nightmarish visions and her husband's mental unravelling, seeks help for the eerie disturbances threatening her daughters, leading to an alliance with church leaders and a battle against malevolent entities. A Reddit user extolled the virtues of the show, stating: "Both seasons are worth watching, especially since they're only 10 episodes each. I found the first season to be great and the second season to be even better. It was one of the best shows on television if you ask me. The quality of it in every aspect blew me away to be honest, I was so disappointed when I found out it was cancelled." Another commented: "Bro, I couldn't believe when it was cancelled. This show caught me TOTALLY by surprise. I figured it'd be dumb AF and cheesy but NOPE. The acting is unbelievable, the music sublime, and the storyline was deftly crafted. On the Rotten Tomatoes platform, the show's first season achieved an impressive 79% rating, complemented by a nearly flawless 91% audience approval score. Yet the second series managed to outdo its predecessor with a pristine 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, alongside a formidable 90% from viewers. "The best horror series I ever watched. I truly loved the series and can't stop watching," lauded a fan. "Gripping, sucked me in straight away. Three episodes in I stopped and decided to wait till the weekend so I could binge," opined another viewer. Though The Exorcist faced cancellation due to lacklustre ratings, creator Jeremy Slater had previously hinted at exciting future prospects. Speaking to TV Line, he teased: "There may even be a potential for telling stories that are happening on branching timelines and flashbacks and different things like that." Resident Evil Requiem trailer reveals release date and new main character
The game previously known only as Resident Evil 9 has finally been revealed and it features a deep cut reference to Resident Evil Outbreak. Summer Game Fest 2025 was a very low-key affair, with hardly any new AAA game reveals. There was still lots of interesting looking titles, such as Mortal Shell 2 and Stranger than Heaven, but the biggest title by far was Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem, aka Resident Evil 9. Technically, the game was announced last summer but nothing had been seen of it up till now and even the reveal trailer left a lot more questions than answers… except when it comes to the release date. Requiem will be out on February 27, just a few weeks before the franchise's 30th anniversary, and the new game is promising a shift in 'tone and gameplay', as well as a return to Racoon City. Capcom didn't detail what the changes would entail but rumours have long suggested the game will be ditching the first person view of the last couple of titles and going back to the traditional third person, over the shoulder view. That wasn't confirmed by the reveal, but it did seem to imply that. As for the tone, it's hard to say but it appeared to be more serious, when compared to the schlocky, more fantastical nature of Resident Evil Village. Resident Evil's ability to change and evolve is one of the secrets of its success but it was still nice to see the police station from Racoon City again, or at least what's left of if after the place got nuked at the end of Resident Evil 2. It was impossible to tell what's going on with the plot, but the trailer focused on new character Grace Ashcroft, a 'technical analyst' at the FBI whose mother seems to be Alyssa Ashcroft. If that doesn't ring a bell then don't worry, as she was only ever in the two Resident Evil Outbreak games – online co-op titles from the PlayStation 2 era, that weren't particularly successful (the first one wasn't even online in Europe). The trailer refers to Alyssa being killed in a hotel eight years earlier, which was not a part of Outbreak's story. As the trailer begins, Grace is writing a report on an 'unidentified disease' that has claimed a fourth victim, with Alyssa presumably being the fifth. It's hard to draw anything too conclusive from the rest of the trailer, but there's a new monster dropping down from the ceiling in one shot, a possible shot of a zombie at the end, and what looks like the Raincoat Killer from Deadly Premonition at one point. There's also a guy with an obviously evil voice, who could be Albert Wesker, who's describing someone – possibly Grace – as the 'chosen one'. Previous rumours have suggested that Leon S. Kennedy and/or Jill Valentine are the main playable characters in Requiem but there was no sign of that in the teaser. Rumours have also claimed the game will be open world but the trailer didn't even hint at that, although it didn't rule it out either. No doubt all that will be the subject of the next trailer, which is presumably coming relatively soon, given the game is due out in a little over eight months. There's a small possibility it could be at the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday but that's unlikely, as it wasn't at the State of Play on Wednesday and Capcom probably don't want to play favourites. The time has arrived to topple the Empire with the Death Star Sabotage Fortnite live event. It's time to bid adieu to a season filled with blasters, Wookies and the incessant fire from X-Wings, as the Fortnite Galactic Battle mini-season is on the brink of ending. The major Star Wars revamp for the game was a delightful surprise for players eager to pilot a Star Destroyer and become their own bounty hunter with a highly customisable Mandalorian skin. However, as the Chapter 6 Season 3 start date looms (yes, the Star Wars season wasn't a numbered entry so we're going into season 3 not 4) players are preparing for the leaked superhero season. Before we reach that point, there's the climactic Fortnite live event poised to bridge the gap between this season and its forthcoming downtime. The Death Star Sabotage event is set to give players the opportunity to rip the moon-sized weapon from the sky once and for all, foiling the Emperor's assumed destructive plans for the island. Details about what players will actually be doing are scarce, but we can make several assumptions about the gameplay that awaits us in the next Fortnite event. But when exactly does it start? Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Fortnite live event. The Death Star Sabotage Fortnite live event is set to kick off at , as confirmed by Epic Games in a recent tweet, revealing when we can anticipate joining the live event. The Fortnite live event will feature its own unique lobby where players will gather ahead of it being joinable. There won't be any re-runs, and the game will transition directly into its downtime once it's over. A fresh teaser trailer has been released via the Fortnite Twitter account, offering a snipper of sequences from the live event. It depicts players dashing into various parts of the Death Star, blasting lasers at Stormtroopers as they storm the base. We also catch a brief glimpse of gameplay featuring a player soaring towards the Death Star in a TIE Fighter, which is presumably how we'll actually board the space station. This was initially suggested by the key art of Fishstick in a Stormtrooper outfit emerging from the top of the spaceship, so it's reassuring to see that it'll be a crucial part of the experience.
