The X-Files fans convinced TV reboot 'could fix show's biggest mistake'

Metro21-04-2025
Ryan Coogler has left the X-Files fans seriously pumped after shedding light on his 'really f**king scary' reboot ideas.
Fresh from directing horror film Sinners, with Michael B Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, the filmmaker is set to turn his attention to reviving the iconic 90s sci-fi series.
The original program ran for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002, following FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) – it also spanned two movies and a short-lived revival in 2016, which ended after two years.
The 38-year-old previously sent us all into a spin when he revealed he would be developing a new reboot in 2023, with series creator Chris Carter announcing that he was not involved last year.
In a new appearance on Last Podcast on the Left, the director finally shared a much-needed update on the project, declaring he has been 'fired up' to get back to work on it.
'I'm working on X-Files,' he confirmed. 'That's what's immediately next. So, I've been excited about that for a long time, and I'm fired up to get back to it, and some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f**king scary.
Little else is known about the reboot or when we can expect it, but 'immediately next' sounds like viewers won't be waiting too long.
Ryan also suggested that the OG cast could be involved, sharing that he has 'spoken to' Gillian about his ideas for the project.
'I've spoken to the great Gillian,' he added. 'She's incredible. Fingers crossed there. I can't wait to see her. She's in Tron [Ares]. I just seen a trailer for that. When I spoke to her, she was finishing that up.
'But we're going to try to make something really great, and really be something for the real X-Files fans. And maybe find some new ones.'
Unsurprisingly, fans were thrilled by the update and flocked to Reddit to unpack the director's comments, sharing their hopes that Ryan will correct the mistakes made with Scully's arc in the later seasons – something Gillian publicly spoke out against.
A-hthy penned: 'Oh wow. I'm so down for this. I understand Gillian wasn't happy with the end of s11, they absolutely ruined Scully's character!! It was an insult.
'I would be soooo excited to see her come back [sic].'
'Oh hell yeah! A proper follow up (by someone who is not Chris Carter) is such a better idea than full on reboot,' Special-Chipmunk7127 agreed.
'I trust Coogler with this, with the tear he's been on he could do anything he wants and the fact he's choosing this means he's got to have a pretty solid concept and something worth saying with it,' Helidokter wrote.
As Forcefivepod added: 'There are only a few people who could get me excited for an X-Files reboot. Coogler is one of them.'
This won't be the first X Files reboot as the series was revived back in 2016, taking place 14 years after season nine.
David and Gillian returned, and were joined by Joel McHale, Lauren Ambrose, Robbie Amell and Aliza Vellani – however, the newer episodes were panned by fans and critics alike.
Gillian, who also starred in The Crown and Sex Education, previously called out the changes made to her character – and her decision not to return after season 11 – while popping up in her co-star's Fail Better podcast. More Trending
'It felt like Scully's trajectory was no longer one of strength and agency,' she said, via AV Club. 'It felt like it was beholden to an old idea of what a woman is…
'Literally all she could talk about was William and finding William. That's literally a one-track song.'

'I wasn't really enjoying the direction that it was heading,' she added. 'And I didn't have a voice in it. And so I felt like I needed to move on to something where I might have more of a voice.'

Only people with sharp eyes can solve 'irritating' optical illusion in seconds

You could easily spend a while staring at this tricky image, but are you able to work out what's going on in the 'irritating' optical illusion within a few seconds? It's not always easy having to switch your sharp vision on and trying to work out what's happening in an optical illusion. Recently, people were struggling to spot the hidden image, while only those with good eyes could understand another brainteaser. ‌ Now with the latest puzzle, you'll need a lot of patience and a good set of goggles on you. So are you ready to conquer it? In a post on Reddit, a forum designed for optical illusions shared a standard grid but you'll have to be very clued up to understand what is actually happening in it. The picture's caption read: "All of these lines are straight." ‌ While it might seem straightforward once you've read the caption, take a look at the picture and you'll find it's actually more disorientating than you think. ‌ It shows a grey grid with green lines all over, some of which are straight and others appearing to be bent. But that's where you're wrong... So why is this optical illusion really confusing? When lines appear bent but are straight it could mean it's an example of the Cafe Wall Illusion or the Hering Illusion. This is caused by brain processes that interpret surrounding patterns or backgrounds. These illusions can occur because your brain is trying to make sense of the visual information by using past experiences and context, which leads to misinterpretations. What is the Cafe Wall Illusion? This might be alternating rows of dark and light blocks which make parallel straight lines that appear curved or bent. And how do you know it's a Hering Illusion? This is when straight, parallel lines can seem to bow outwards when seen against a background of radiating lines. Whatever optical illusion it might be, it's certainly left people scratching their heads on the Reddit post. And since it was shared, it racked up hundreds of upvotes as one commented: "This is genuinely irritating. Well done." While another added: "I hate it here." A third posted: "Liar." And a fourth chimed in: "No they're not! I refuse to accept that."

Democrat ex-FBI director admits he learned unlikely wisdom from popstar to deal with Trump

Former FBI Director James Comey has tried his best to stay culturally relevant, chiming in Sunday with his take on some viral advice from a pop-culture icon. In a video post made on his Substack Sunday, Comey shared that he listens to Swift's music and tries to emulate her softer approach to dealing with President Donald Trump. 'While our elderly makeup-covered president is posting about whether Taylor Swift is still hot and declaring that he can't stand her, what's she doing?' Comey asked. 'Living her best life, producing great music and as she urged all of us to do during the podcast, not giving the jerks power over her mind,' Comey said, referring to the pop icon's recent appearance on the 'New Heights' podcast hosted by her NFL star boyfriend Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce. Trump's most recent attack on Swift came earlier this month when he pitted the pop star against actress Sydney Sweeney, claiming that Swift was 'No Longer Hot' after she endorsed his 2024 Presidential rival Kamala Harris last year. 'She said something about dealing with internet trolls that stuck with me - think of your energy as if it's expensive,' Comey added in his Sunday video. Comey is currently under investigation for implying President Donald Trump 'should be assassinated.' He uploaded a cryptic picture on his Instagram account back in May which featured an assortment of shells arranged to spell out: '86 47.' That specific combination of numbers has been linked to the assassination of Trump and a 'quiet resistance.' The number 86 is considered slang for 'to kill or murder' within some circles, in an apparent reference to a standard sized grave being eight feet long and six feet deep. Trump is the 47th president, so some anti-Trump groups use the two numbers together to indicate that Trump should be assassinated. The former FBI Director's daughter, Maureen Comey, was fired from her post as a prosecutor in the Manhattan US attorney's office last month, a move that was announced by Trump's Attorney General Pam Bondi. The former FBI chief channeled Swift in his Sunday video, after the singer noted during her appearance on the New Heights podcast last week to 'think of your energy as if it's expensive, as if it's a luxury item.' 'Not everyone can afford it. Not everyone has invested in you in order to be able for you have the capital to care about this,' the 'Bad-Blood' singer added. Brittney Mahomes, wife of Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs teammate Patrick Mahomes, was one celebrity who reposted the clip of Swift's advice on Friday morning and wrote, with three applauding emojis: 'That. Is. The. Day.' The star WAG duo's at times rocky friendship appears stronger than ever after the singer's podcast appearance. This time last year, the brand new besties appeared to suddenly be at odds after Mahomes endorsed Donald Trump in the upcoming election while Swift, who has a long-running feud with Trump, backed Harris. Former FBI Director Comey captioned a May Instagram post with 'cool shell formation on my beach walk' under a picture of seashells that appeared to form the shapes for '86 47' Swift also announced her new album on the podcast, with her 12th record 'The Life of a Showgirl' to be released October 3. Three-time Super Bowl winner Patrick revealed Wednesday he had an early heads-up that Swift was finally appearing on the show, telling reporters at practice: I knew before y'all did just because they called me after the podcast was done.' He jokingly corrected himself, adding: 'They didn't call me, they called Brittany. I was in the back of the FaceTime.' Soon enough, Mahomes and Swift will be reunited at Arrowhead Stadium once the Kansas City Chiefs start the new NFL season.

Outlander Blood of My Blood fans issue same complaint just three episodes in

Outlander: Blood of My Blood sees episodes released weekly *Warning: may contain spoilers for Outlander: Blood of My Blood* ‌ Outlander: Blood of My Blood fans have issued the same complaint just three episodes in the brand new show. ‌ Outlander fans are all eagerly awaiting the eighth and final season which is set to be released next year, concluding author Diana Gabaldon's impressive 11-year run. But fans are now tuning into the prequel, Outlander: Blood of My Blood with episodes dropping on MGM+ on Prime Video weekly. ‌ Outlander fans are finally able to stream the prequel to the popular show which explores the relationship of Jamie Fraser's parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie. Having premiered on August 9, Outlander: Blood of My Blood ventures into unexplored territory as it's not based on any book. But with the third episode being released on Saturday, August 16, fans have all been issuing the same complaint. Prime Video writes about the episode: "Ellen hatches a new plan to protect herself and her family. Julia is forced to make an impossible choice." However, taking to Reddit, some fans have been unimpressed so far, as they ask for more Brian and Ellen screen time. One person said: " Why are Brian & Ellen not having any interactions anymore? I loved the idea of them at first but I thought we'd see them sneaking off to meet each other. Their relationship just isn't developing at all." Another wrote: "I crave more Brian and Ellen. The one plotline I'm worried about is the Murtagh-Brian relationship that will inevitably suffer when Murtagh will find out about Brian and Ellen. I'm curious how the whole thing will play out. We know that in the end, Brian and Murtagh still remained close, but the strain on their relationship will surely show at some point." A third added: "Brian & Ellen went from 0-100 aye?! I'm agreeing now that a more gradual buildup might a been nice. Andddd it was a dream." ‌ A fourth commented: "Then we move on to Ellen and Brian. Except there is no Ellen and Brian", adding: "My question is, what passed between them during the bridge scene? "They made to believe she stayed for a long time, or was it that the road just took all her time? Did they hand-fast and lay together? Or only exchanged those words? I am so confused and upset that we don't have any development on this." ‌ Another penned: "The pacing has been somewhat off since episode one, and I entirely dislike the Brian and Ellen situation as they have next to no screen time and I feel like I'm being kept out of the loop. I was actually angry that the first kiss we saw from them was a dream sequence." However, some fans have praised the series so far as they are already coming up with potential theories for the remainder of the series as well as Outlander season eight. One person said: "I LOVED this episode. It was amazing. And that last scene when Julia opening the door of a clearly decorated room my heart sank because I knew what was coming. "I'm more convinced than ever now that that baby's story will tie into season 8 somehow." Another agreed: "Of course it will. It's the only thing that will make sense. Faith clearly didn't survive and Julia's child will know the Seaside song and pass it down to his/her own children/grandchildren."
