Maung Maung's fame mounts after his goal seals dream victory

PETALING JAYA: If you didn't know about him before, well you will certainly know him now. Myanmar's Maung Maung Lwin (pic) stole the show during Manchester United's post-season match against the Asean All-Stars at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday. The 29-year-old scored the winning goal against the Red Devils in front of 72,550 fans, finding the back of the net in the 71st minute. 'I could never have dreamt about this. I thought to myself, maybe this isn't a dream. 'I had one chance and it was the winning goal. 'It was not just for the team, but the whole of Asean. That's why I'm so happy,' said the Myanmar national team captain. Maung Lwin has been playing with the Myanmar national team since 2015, scoring his first goal in 2016. Known for his free-kick abilities, Maung Lwin started his professional footballing career with Hantharwady United in Myanmar in 2014, then moving to Yangon United in 2017. In 2021, he joined Thailand's Yangon United and currently plays in the Thai Premier League. The match was also a memorable moment for Indonesia's Kakang Rudianto, who was starstruck on the pitch. 'I never thought I would be playing on the same pitch as Alejandro Garnacho. It just gives me the motivation to keep working hard towards success. 'The match was really high-level football, and we went in with minimal preparation,' he said. Kakang recently lifted the Liga 1 Indonesian title with Persib Bandung, under former Kuala Lumpur coach Bojan Hodak.

Kim Swee will Persis in his duty after fulfilling mission

We can do more: Ong Kim Swee (left) with his assistant Juan Torres Garrido during a Persis Solo training session. — Persis Solo PETALING JAYA: Datuk Ong Kim Swee has fulfilled his mission of keeping Persis Solo in Indonesia's Liga 1 and now, the Malaysian coach is hoping to remain at the helm of the Central Java-based club. When Kim Swee took charge in November 2024, Persis were languishing in 16th place and in real danger of relegation. Fast forward to May 2025, and they sit 13th in the table with 36 points, five clear of the drop zone with one game remaining, effectively securing their top-flight status. But it hasn't been smooth sailing. In Kim Swee's first seven matches, Persis failed to register a single win, managing only three draws. But the tide turned after a 2-1 win over PSIS Semarang on Jan 20. Since then, they have recorded seven wins and five draws from 15 games, a significant turnaround. Reflecting on the club's revival, Kim Swee credited the team's resilience and the impact of key signings made during the mid-season transfer window. 'When I took over, the main objective was clear - avoid relegation. I am glad we've managed that,' said the former Malaysian national team coach. 'Some may think it was an easy job, but securing survival after nearly six months shows just how competitive this league is. 'We brought in four players during the second transfer window, and they made a huge difference.' Those signings included Argentinian midfielder Lautaro Belleggia, Brazilian centreback Clelyton Santos, dynamic winger Jhon Cley, and Dutch wingback Jordy Tutuarima - all of whom played crucial roles in helping Kim Swee steady the ship. With his contract expiring at the end of May, Kim Swee is set to meet the club management to discuss his future. While nothing has been confirmed yet, he's optimistic about extending his stay. 'I have not signed anything yet, but discussions will begin soon. Personally, I would love another season here,' he said. 'If all goes well, I'll be able to bring in players I have in mind, some of them Malaysians, depending on the club's budget.' Persis will close their campaign against newly crowned champions Persib Bandung at the Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium on May 24, a match that will see Kim Swee reunited with Bojan Hodak, a fellow Malaysian football stalwart now managing the champions.

Bojan brings out the best in his boys

Man with Midas touch: Bojan Hodak is all smiles with his players after winning the league title. — Persib Bandung PETALING JAYA: Bojan Hodak is stamping his authority as one of South-East Asia's most successful coaches and his latest conquest has come in style, leading Persib Bandung to back-to-back Liga 1 Indonesia titles. The 54-year-old Croatian, who began his head coaching career in Malaysia with UPB-MyTeam in 2006, has transformed Persib into a dominant force since joining them midway through 2023. Back then, Persib were languishing in 16th place but Hodak's arrival has sparked a remarkable turnaround. They surged to finish second in the regular season and stormed into the Championship Series final, eventually crushing Madura United 6-1 on aggregate. This season, with the league format reverting to a single-table format (no playoffs), Persib clinched the Liga 1 title with four matches to spare, a feat underlining their dominance. With two games remaining, they have 65 points from 32 matches, a full eight points ahead of second-placed Dewa United. Asked about his secret to success, the ever-affable Hodak offered a typical self-effacing quip: 'Probably I'm just lucky.' But as he elaborated, it became clear that luck alone didn't build champions. 'I will say it again, luck is part of life, I have my superstitions but the most important thing, in football and in life, is man management,' said Hodak, who previously helmed Kelantan, Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) and Kuala Lumpur. 'If you can't get a group of people to follow you, you can't achieve anything. They need to work together, follow the same ethos, be a family. Only then do fitness and tactics come in.' Hodak cited Kuala Lumpur as an example of how belief and unity can conquer odds. 'We had a small budget, a unique setup, but every player was ready to die for each other. That's how we won the Malaysia Cup in 2021 and reached the AFC Cup final in 2022.' 'It's a similar situation in Bandung. When I arrived, the dressing room was fractured. I brought in my philosophy, changed a few players, and here we are.' Hodak's approach to the game is refreshingly simple. 'Don't complicate football. Keep it simple and focus on winning each game.' Despite his success, he admits the Indonesian league presents unique challenges. 'This league isn't like Malaysia, where one team dominate. Here, anyone can beat anyone. We've dropped points against teams near the bottom and mid-table. 'Travelling is a big test too, getting to Papua can take 11 or 12 hours. In Malaysia, the longest trip is maybe 2.5 hours to East Malaysia.' 'Also, some training grounds and stadiums need improvement, though things are getting better since the Under-17 World Cup.' Hodak sees promise in Indonesia's youth talent but notes a gap between emerging and senior players. 'The talent is there, but they need to work really hard to break into the first team.' Though Croatian by birth, Hodak's heart is clearly tied to Malaysia. 'There's a saying in Croatia – you're from where your wife is. So I'm Malaysian thanks to my wife,' he said. 'Wherever I go, I want to win. I won the treble with Kelantan in 2012, helped JDT win their first league title in 2014, won the AFF Under-19 title for Malaysia, and now back-to-back titles in Indonesia.' And with his trademark humour, Hodak summed it up best – 'I guess I'm just lucky.'
