However, he failed to start a single Premier League game, and remained goalless in 14 senior appearances.
Njie went on to play for Marseille, Dynamo Moscow and Turkish club Sivasspor before moving to Rapid Bucharest last September.
He signed a deal until 2026, with the Romanians announcing him in a bizarre video alongside former US president Bill Clinton.
But Njie made just a dozen appearances, scoring twice, and has not played for the capital city side since February 2.

They have now parted company with the 31-year-old, who has won 42 Cameroon caps.
Rapid issued a terse statement on social media.
They announced: "FC Rapid and Cameroonian striker Clinton Njie reached an amicable agreement for the termination of the collaboration.
"Thank you, Clinton! Good luck in your career."

Njie said: "I thank everyone at Rapid for this period, colleagues, staff and supporters.
"It was an intense experience, in a club with a special history and atmosphere.

"I wish the boys the best of luck next season, and I hope Rapid gets where it deserves to be."
Rapid finished sixth in Romania's Liga 1. They last won the national title in 2003.
To add to Njie's woes, a French court has ordered him to pay a car rental firm £56,000.
The trial at Aix-en-Provence heard the footballer leased a Bentley worth £275,000 in 2017, but stopped making payments when he left for Dynamo Moscow two years later.

Tottenham ‘disgusted' by racial abuse aimed at Mathys Tel after Super Cup defeat

Tottenham have said they are 'disgusted' after forward Mathys Tel received racial abuse on social media after Wednesday night's Uefa Super Cup defeat to Paris St Germain. Tel missed a spot-kick in a penalty shoot-out, which Tottenham lost 4-3 after they had surrendered a late 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 after 90 minutes. Advertisement The France Under-21s international, whose loan deal from Bayern Munich was made permanent in a £30 million deal in June, was targeted with abuse after firing his effort wide. Tottenham said in a statement: 'We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat. 'Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards – hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views. 'We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify. We stand with you, Mathys.' Advertisement Tottenham led 2-0 until the 85th minute at the Bluenergy Stadium in Udine, Italy, through goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero before late efforts from Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos hauled PSG level.

What positives can Spurs take from PSG defeat?

Tottenham "will feel a lot of positives" around how they performed against Paris St-Germain despite it ending in penalty heartbreak, says former Spurs winger Aaron Lennon."Their whole structure looked better," he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "There was so much discipline and you need that in the Premier League."There were too many times last season where the team were too open and they got exposed, but under Thomas Frank I think we are going to see a much more organised Tottenham side. "Once the dust has settled from the defeat, they will feel a lot of positives."Ex-goalkeeper Paul Robinson added: "They were able to adapt and change throughout the game, but just couldn't hold on."You can see that Frank is tactically aware of how to try to beat a team who are inferior because the structure and set-plays were there against PSG."You could see the players had an understanding and there was an enjoyment around being without the ball. They were quite comfortable to retreat into a defensive shape but then knew what the trigger was to break out of that and press again."That is something we've not seen before from Spurs."Listen to the Football Daily podcast on BBC Sounds
