Will There Be ‘The Gilded Age' Season 4? Here's The Really Good News

This article contains spoilers from Season 3 of The Gilded Age. Another dramatic season of The Gilded Age is coming to a close, with the highly anticipated Season 3 finale arriving tonight on HBO Max. Here's everything to know about the status of The Gilded Age Season 4, including the renewal status, plot, returning cast and more. In anticipation of Season 3, Louisa Jacobson told viewers to expect 'a lot of plot twists.' 'It's going to keep you on your toes,' the actress told People, and she wasn't lying. One of the biggest twists in Season 3 came in Episode 6 with the surprise death of John Adams, who was struck by a speeding horse carriage moments after sharing one last romantic moment with Oscar. Creator Julian Fellowes told TV Insider that Adams' death was essential in order to move Oscar's storyline forward, adding that they were 'quite careful to kill him with a straight accident, not with anything with political overtones. He's just killed in an accident, like anyone could be at any time.' Now, another fan-favorite character is in danger of getting killed off. The penultimate episode of Season 3 concluded with Russell family patriarch, George Russell, getting shot by a mysterious assailant at his office. Morgan Spector (who plays George) told Variety that viewers 'should be very worried.' While we wait to learn George's fate, what about the fate of the period drama? Here's what to know about The Gilded Age Season 4, including the exciting news about the next chapter. Will There Be The Gilded Age Season 4? Yes, HBO announced on July 28, 2025, that the series had been renewed for a fourth season, a few episodes before the Season 3 finale. The renewal comes as HBO reports that total premiere-night viewing for Season 3 has increased for five consecutive weeks, resulting in a 20 percent growth over last season. Fan engagement has also risen, with social chatter rising nearly 60 percent week over week. Additionally, the third season has received the most critical acclaim than the previous two seasons. Variety's TV critic Alison Herman called it 'the best season yet,' adding that it 'recalibrates The Gilded Age into a show that's more dramatic in some areas and more lighthearted in others than it's been in the past.' 'We couldn't be prouder of the undeniable viewership heights The Gilded Age has achieved this season,' Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said in a statement. "Transporting us to 1880s New York City, Julian Fellowes and the enormously talented cast and crew have created a 'cant-miss it' entertainment experience from week to week, and we're delighted to continue exploring these characters' grand ambitions for what we promise will be a thrilling fourth season.' What Will The Gilded Age Season 4 Be About? The plot details for The Gilded Age Season 4 are under wraps. Fellowes said in a recent interview with TV Insider that he doesn't have a plan for further seasons of the show, but said that the job is to 'reinvent' the series every season. 'But each time you have to reinvent the show in order to give it a new dynamic to fit its new proportions. And I think that is part of our job," he explained. "That's part of what you do if you write a series for television. So in a sense, each [season] has to have a satisfactory conclusion given what's taken place within the series, but an open end where we may be going to, and that is the sort of double discipline that we write to really." Who Will Be The Gilded Age Season 4 Cast? Returning and new cast members for The Gilded Age Season 4 have not been revealed, but there's strong chance that the main cast will return. This includes Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon), Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon), Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski), Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga), Peggy Scott (Denée Benton), and more. It's unknown whether George Russell (Morgan Spector) will be back for Season 4, as his character's fate is uncertain after likely being shot in Season 3, Episode 7. However, Claybourne Elder, who portrays John Adams, is unlikely to return following his character's tragic death in Season 3. When Will The Gilded Age Season 4 Come Out? HBO has yet to announce a premiere date for The Gilded Age Season 4. The first season debuted in 2022, followed by Season 2 in 2023. There was then a two-year period before Season 3 was released in June 2025, so the fourth season could come out anywhere from next year to mid-2027. The Gilded Age Season 3 finale airs tonight, Sunday, August 10, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max. Check out all the viewing options here. Watch the mid-season trailer below.

‘It's So Fun and Freeing to Take Up This Much Space': Louisa Jacobson on Her Breakout Year

The day that Louisa Jacobson and I are scheduled to chat over Zoom is a big one, for both New York and Jacobson herself. We're meeting on the second day of a record-breaking heatwave, the culminating week of Pride Month, and, as it happens, the one-year anniversary of Jacobson publicly coming out. The third season of HBO's The Gilded Age, in which Jacobson plays Marian Brook, a doe-eyed newcomer to late-1800s Manhattan high society, premiered a few days prior. And the night before, Zohran Mamdani clinched a historic victory over former governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City's mayoral primary. 'I ranked Zohran as number one,' says Jacobson. 'So, yay…I'm really excited. It's a very cool breakthrough moment in New York politics.' Mamdani's win also coincided with the American premiere of Trophy Boys—a play written by Emmanuelle Mattana and directed by Danya Taymor—off-Broadway, at MCC Theatre. In it, Jacobson and the rest of the AFAB cast don drag to play an all-boys senior debate team as they prepare to face their sister school in the final battle of their high school careers. The task? Arguing the affirmative for the prompt that 'feminism has failed women.' 'The opportunity during Pride Month to be doing drag and doing a show like this is so cool,' says Jacobson. 'And to investigate gender as performance and dive-deep into exploring the more masculine parts of myself, as well.' She also notes that this kind of drag is the reverse of what is usually represented in popular culture. 'We don't see it as often as we see queens, you know? I think it's less digestible. I think people don't always understand how to receive it…So I think we were batting up a little bit with that, but it's been really fun.' Even as it navigates themes of privilege, toxic masculinity, and the nuances of sexual assault allegations, the play still manages to feel boisterous and campy. It even has one horny dance break, in which all the boys gyrate to Pretty Ricky's 2005 hit 'Grind With Me'—making literal the already effectively masturbatory nature of their debate. As the quartet humps chairs, doms desks, and spanks the air, it's clear their intellectualizing is merely a coping mechanism for that specific, liminal teen space of extreme lust exacerbated by a maddening lack of experience.

55 Thoughts I Had While Watching ‘The Gilded Age' Season 3 Premiere

All right, I confess; I didn't keep up religiously with Season 2 of The Gilded Age—maybe because I was getting my Cynthia Nixon fix from And Just Like That… and my Carrie Coon fix from The White Lotus (and my Christine Baranski fix from obsessively rewatching Mamma Mia!, but I digress). Now, though, the HBO show is back for its third season, and I am absolutely locked in, even if I'm having a little trouble remembering some of the characters' names and/or general deals. Let's dive in, shall we? Horse-drawn carriages! Mr. Russell's beard is so on-point. Ah, the picturesque majesty of snow in New York, before it turns to slush and gets completely disgusting. Would be nice right about now! 'We've had some changes.' I'll say! Time for Cynthia Nixon's temperance meeting! Yes, Christine Baranski! Call it 'absurd'! Get her ass! Christine and Cynthia are really showcasing the range of bangs types here (straight vs. curly). Oh, hell yeah, 'Mr. Sargent' is coming by to paint! This is like when they casually reference Picasso in Titanic. Taissa Farmiga's little fur capelet is fabulous. No offense, The Gilded Age props/set design team, but this snow looks fake as hell. There's our girl Louisa Jacobson! In powder blue, no less! New York used to be so pretty before we, as a culture, ruined it. Miners' strike? There is power in a union, baby! 'I prefer to pick them off one by one.' Likely thing for a union-busting boss to say! It's weird that some people on this show are doing Little Period Voices and some aren't. Obsessed with Mr. Sargent's naughty little smock. Portrait of Madame X shoutout! One of the all-time art-historical babes! Yay, Denée Benton's novel is getting published! I need a supercut of just Cynthia and Christine fighting. 'Those who partake in alcohol are destined to the fury of hell.' Welp! God, Louisa's looking blonde as hell. OMG, this corset top over a turtleneck? Go off, Gladys. Ugh, Aurora, I hate your husband. You should, too! She's exactly right in not granting him a divorce, IMO. Was the word 'shady' being used in this context back then? 'I never thought I would be glad to have no children.' It happens! 'If you want to marry me and I want to marry you, we're already engaged.' Well, not exactly, bro. Where's the ring? Hot lemon and honey sounds so good right now. Cynthia dropping the hammer on her lodger! I love it. LMAO at Christine saying that the 'Female Normal and High School' sounds like a mistranslation. Aw, I love this brother-sister chat moment. Kind of weird that it's in Gladys's bed, but I guess they didn't have that many places to hang out? In…their mansion? I'm obsessed with the various and sundry robes of The Gilded Age. See, Denée and Louisa hanging out in a bedroom I can totally get behind. (Not in a gay way! Just in a gal-pals-at-a-sleepover way!) Oh no, someone's snitching on Gladys! 'In this house, nothing is accepted that isn't proposed by Mrs. Russell.' Tea. These boots Adelheid is lacing are sort of…gorgeous? Man, talk about laying down the law. 'In America, you don't have to live like your parents lived.' In theory, sure. Never has a man looked so sad in a bowler hat. Oh no, Denée definitely isn't feeling better! Was consumption still a thing during this time period? Man, I really should have studied for, like, any of my history classes throughout my 16 years of education. Jesus, the doctor's too racist to treat Denée? Even with all of these women's money? 'What I feel for Billy is real.' Sure. 'I'm not a girl! Not anymore! When will you see that?' What an ideal time for a Britney needle drop. Damn, Carrie calling Billy a 'worthless nonentity' goes crazy hard. I need to interview the horse actors on this show. And with that…it's a wrap on Episode 1 of Season 3! Welcome back, my little women!
