‘M3GAN 2.0' Will Not Slay in Japan

The hits just keep coming for M3GAN 2.0, as Universal is opting to not release it in Japan. Originally, the action-horror sequel was set to come out in the territory on October 10. Now, the movie's Japanese Twitter account announced in a (translated) post the studio 'decided to cancel the theatrical release of [the film]. We thank you for your continued support and ask for your understanding.' — 映画『M3GAN/ミーガン 2.0』公式 (@m3gan_JP) August 1, 2025M3GAN 2.0 first came out in late June in North America and other territories, but it had some sizeable competition in How to Train Your Dragon and F1. With its thunder stolen, the box office dropoff was so steep, Blumhouse head Jason Blum admitted that it bit off more than it could chew. The sequel's theatrical release being junked in Japan only underlines how we might not see the android again for quite a while, if at all. At the time of writing, Universal hasn't announced if it'll put the film on streaming in the region. On the other hand, the franchise's fortunes may be reversed in its upcoming spinoff, SOULM8TE. The already-made erotic thriller starring Lily Sullivan and David Rysdahl about a man buying an android to replace his dead wife is expected for January 2026, and it could be the save Blumhouse needs to keep making M3GAN movies. Until then, U.S. fans can watch M3GAN 2.0 digitally or wait for its physical, unrated release on September 23. Want more io9 news? Box Office: ‘F1' Leads the Pack With $25 Million Opening Day, ‘M3GAN 2.0' Not So Fab in Fourth Place Debut

Apple Studios is scoring its biggest opening ever with the Brad Pitt racing thriller 'F1,' headed for first in its box office debut. Meanwhile, Universal's 'M3GAN 2.0' isn't catching the same spark in its opening, projecting a fourth-place start behind holdovers 'How to Train Your Dragon' and 'Elio.' On top, 'F1' hit the track with $25 million across Friday and previews from 3,661 locations. (A small asterisk: that's boosted by $2.8 million from specialty screenings dating before Thursday, the weekday when wide releases traditionally first start collecting grosses.) The movie is playing in Imax auditoriums and most other premium-large formats too. Apple outsourced distribution here, partnering with Warner Bros. The team-up has made a splash. More from Variety Box Office: 'F1' Makes $10 Million in Previews, 'M3GAN 2.0' Has $1.5 Million Brad Pitt's L.A. Home Ransacked by Burglars 'M3GAN 2.0' Director Gerard Johnstone on AMELIA, 'Monster High' and the 'Thorny Territory' of AI in Film Industry tracking was all over the place for 'F1,' given the relative rarity of big-budget adult-skewing productions outside of established film franchises (though the Formula One Group's branding and grand prix racing tournaments are still globally popular IP — the basis for most summer tentpoles). 'F1' is now on pace to hit the upper end of its pre-weekend forecasts, which were predicting a debut as high as $60 million. The movie is already Apple's biggest opening weekend ever, surpassing the $23.2 million three-day bow of 'Killers of the Flower Moon' on Friday. It's a sizable stateside launch for 'F1,' and the film is expected to be heavily buoyed by international grosses given Formula One's popularity overseas. Apple spent big on its stab at a summer blockbuster, with a production budget north of $200 million. Of course, Apple is also a multi-trillion-dollar tech giant, with one theatrical release having relatively little immediate impact on its bottom line, especially compared to traditional studios. Still, the company would like to deliver a hit here and establish itself as a true theatrical presence, especially after its expensive 2024 commercial plays, 'Argylle' and 'Fly Me to the Moon,' failed to find footing in theaters. The duo of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski (coming off delivering a monster hit in 2022 with 'Top Gun: Maverick') has delivered another crowdpleaser with 'F1.' Reviews have been positive and audience pollster CinemaScore delivered a glowing 'A' grade. Those great notices could portend strong staying power, if 'F1' can keep up as 'Jurassic World: Rebirth' and 'Superman' release in the weeks ahead. Meanwhile, the android actioner 'M3GAN 2.0' earned a muted $4.5 million across Friday and preview screenings. It's now projected for a three-day debut of $10.4 million. That's way behind its projections for $20 million and just over a third of what the first 'M3GAN' earned in its breakout opening back in January 2023, lifted by the momentum of TikTok dancing meme-dom. It's not a flattering comp considering Universal and Blumhouse/Atomic Monster doubled the spending for this sequel. At a $25 million production budget, the film is still much less of a financial burden than the average franchise play. All told, 'M3GAN 2.0' doesn't need to draw a massive crowd to turn a profit (and the 'B+' grade on CinemaScore indicates good buzz from viewers). But this is shaping up to be a rough drop-off from the box office performance of the original 'M3GAN' — not to mention this sequel garnered much worse reviews. The failure to deliver a franchise opening is all the more rankling considering a spin-off, titled 'Soulm8te,' has already been shot and slated for a January 2026 release from Universal. 'M3GAN 2.0' continues what has been a quiet year for Blumhouse, which has kept with its tradition of tight budgets, but hasn't found much upside in titles like 'Wolf Man,' 'The Woman in the Yard' and 'Drop.' The banner's next at-bat is another sequel, 'The Black Phone 2,' releasing from Universal in October. Meanwhile, Universal can still claim second place with 'How to Train Your Dragon,' which added another $5.7 million on Friday and is projecting a 48% drop for a third-weekend gross of $19 million. The live-action remake has a shot at surpassing a $200 million domestic total through Sunday, and will soon after fly ahead of 'Captain America: Brave New World' ($200.5 million) to rank as the fourth-highest-grossing North American release of 2025. Disney and Pixar's 'Elio' is narrowly projected for third, earning another $3.2 million on Friday. (That's more than 'M3GAN 2.0' after factoring out Thursday preview grosses.) The original alien adventure is actually looking at a good hold in its second outing, though not strong enough to overcome its rough opening weekend, which broke the record for Pixar's lowest ever. 'Elio' has now earned $34.7 million domestically through its first eight days of release — a disappointing start for the $150 million production. Rounding out the top five, Sony's '28 Years Later' is getting a big bite taken out of it. The hopeful trilogy-starter earned $3 million on Friday and is projecting a second weekend of $9.5 million, down 68% from its opening. Great reviews haven't shielded director Danny Boyle's zombie thriller from a sharp drop. Domestic total is expected to hit $50 million through the first 10 days. A sequel, '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,' has already been filmed and is expected to be released in January. Boyle has openly discussed that financing for a third and final entry is dependent on box office performance. Fast cars vs. killer dolls: ‘F1,' ‘M3GAN 2.0' gear up for box-office showdown

Two major films are revving up for big debuts at the box office for the June 27-29 weekend, with Apple Original Films' ambitious Formula One drama F1: The Movie and Universal's campy horror sequel M3GAN 2.0 each eyeing strong openings. F1 is tracking to debut above $30 million in the U.S., with some forecasts suggesting that the film, starring Brad Pitt as a retired Formula One driver mentoring a rookie (Damson Idris), could start as high as $40 million–$45 million domestically and even race toward $50 million–$60 million if momentum builds. Internationally, where Formula One has a massive fan base, Warner Bros., distributing the film for Apple, is hoping for a $75 million-plus haul across 77 markets. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and carrying a hefty $200 million production budget, global success is key for F1 to justify Apple's gamble on theatrical releases. The original M3GAN, released in January 2023, shocked industry expectations by opening to $30 million and legging out to $95 million domestically ($180 million worldwide) on a mere $12 million budget, fueled by its viral TikTok dance routines. This time, the PG-13 killer doll movie returns with upgraded thrills and escapist stakes, as the titular AI is rebuilt to stop a humanoid robot aiming for world domination. With a modest $25 million budget, M3GAN 2.0 doesn't need a blockbuster showing to turn a profit. SEE 'M3GAN 2.0' reviews say the sequel is both too much and not enough F1 is expected to dominate the domestic charts, propelled by Pitt's star power, Kosinski's storytelling expertise, and Formula One's global popularity (Lewis Hamilton even serves as a producer). While F1 seems geared to attract older male audiences, M3GAN 2.0 is strongest with younger women and remains a social media sensation. Both films will face heavy competition as Universal's Jurassic World: Rebirth roars into cinemas on July 2, along with holdover hits like Disney/Pixar's Elio and Sony's 28 Years Later. Gold Derby readers predict that F1: The Movie will win the June 27-29 weekend with between $25 million and $50 million domestically. After strong test audience reactions and early previews, F1 is poised to dominate the box office with a projected opening of over $40 million. M3GAN 2.0 is expected to scare up enough fans for a strong second-place debut, bringing in over $20 million. Meanwhile, Universal's How to Train Your Dragon remains steady in its third week, giving the killer doll some competition as it eyes $20 million as well. The live-action remake has already amassed an impressive $200 million domestically and $376 million worldwide. Rounding out the top five, Disney/Pixar's Elio and Sony's 28 Years Later are set to continue their box office battle from last week. Though the horror sequel took the lead in their initial matchup, the animated family movie is projected to have more staying power, edging out 28 Years Later with both films aiming for $13 million this weekend.
