MPMA Calls For Immediate Deferment Of SST Implementation
PETALING JAYA, June 17 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA) is calling on the Government to immediately defer the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST) and to initiate structured consultation with affected industries. The sudden rollout announced without adequate notice, clarity, or stakeholder engagement has already disrupted operations, particularly for exporters and companies with raw material shipments currently en route to Malaysia. MPMA expresses serious concern over the lack of transparency and consultation in this decision-making process. Consultation is not a formality, it is essential. Policies made without industry input often fail to reflect practical realities, leading to unintended consequences such as reduced competitiveness, lower investor confidence, and broader economic instability.

500kg plastic waste collected during marathon

Kota Kinabalu: Some 500kg of consumer plastic waste was collected during the Alliance Bank Borneo International Marathon 2025, thanks to a green initiative led by the Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA) Sabah branch. Held last Sunday (May 5) at the Likas Sports Complex, the annual international charity event attracted around 8,000 runners participating in the 42km, 21km, and 10km categories. As part of its 'Don't Be A Litterbug' campaign, the MPMA Sabah Branch mobilised 70 volunteers from its member companies to collect used plastic beverage bottles and other waste along the marathon routes. 'This year, we managed to collect 500kg of plastic bottles and non-recyclable waste like paper and wrappers. 'All bottles were sent to a recycling centre where they'll be given a second life as sustainable packaging products,' said MPMA Sabah Branch Chairman Liaw Hen Kong. Designated recycling bins were placed strategically along the race route to ensure plastic waste was properly sorted and not contaminated by general trash. A recycling station was also set up near the finish line to demonstrate the crushing, compacting and baling process to the public. The initiative builds on the success of last year's campaign, which saw 400kg of plastic waste collected from 6,000 runners. The increase in both runner participation and volume of recycled waste highlights growing public awareness and commitment to sustainability. The campaign, held in collaboration with the Kinabalu Running Club and Datuk Dr Heng Aik Cheng, who is also Race Director of the marathon, aimed not just to create a litter-free event but to promote a culture of responsible waste disposal and recycling among the public. With runners from 49 countries, the campaign also supported Sabah's image as a green tourism destination. The initiative is part of MPMA's ongoing nationwide effort to reduce plastic pollution and promote recycling through its four branches across Malaysia. Strata management and pest groups urge SST pause, say many paying ‘under protest' amid confusing govt guidelines
KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 — Strata Owners Association Malaysia (SOAM) and Malaysian Pest Management Association (MPMA) have today called on the government to pause the implementation of Sales and Service Tax (SST) on their sectors. In a joint press conference, the two groups cited a lack of clarity and claimed that those affected are paying the SST 'under protest'. 'The community is urging the government to delay the implementation. Parliament must debate this properly to urge the government to halt or defer enforcement until there is clear guidance. 'People are willing to cooperate with the government but not under confusion. Without clear guidelines, many are paying SST under protest,' president Datuk Theng Book said. He said some industry players have been told registration for SST is unnecessary as they are not classified as business entities, while others were told to comply. 'For example, a residents' association managing a housing area is unsure whether to register. If the committee makes the wrong move, either by registering or failing to do so, they risk being penalised. 'There have already been cases where some organisations were told they didn't need to register, only to later find out they must,' he said. He also said that those which did register are now at a competitive disadvantage because they have to charge SST and pass the burden to customers. Also speaking at the press conference, Malaysian Pest Management Association (MPMA) president Regine Lim said the pest control sector continues to face uncertainty due to the lack of clear and comprehensive guidelines. She explained that pest control services encompass a wide range of activities including general pest management, vector control, hygiene treatments, and fumigation which serve various clients across residential, commercial, industrial, and government sectors. 'The nature of our industry is complex and multifaceted. Therefore, we seek practical and clear directions from the Customs Department or Ministry of Finance to ensure effective compliance,' she said, urging MPMA members to cooperate with recent audit documents requests made by Customs. However, she said the association has also formally appealed to Customs to review the necessity of widespread audits, particularly considering the recent amendments to the law and the absence of any offences committed under the Customs Act.
