Detroit man charged with murder after crash during Warren police chase kills woman

The Brief A Detroit man is accused of hitting and killing a woman while fleeing Warren police. Authorities said officers tried to stop Anthony Eugene-Douglas Grier Jr. because he was going about 70 mph in a 40 mph zone. Grier is currently being held in the Macomb County Jail. WARREN, Mich. (FOX 2) - A Detroit man is facing several charges, including murder, after police say he caused a fatal crash while fleeing Warren officers over the weekend. Officers spotted a Chrysler 300, driven by 33-year-old Anthony Eugene-Douglas Grier Jr., going about 70 mph in a 40 mph zone on Van Dyke near Miller just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday. An update on this chase is expected at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Watch live above. The backstory Grier did not stop, leading police on a chase. The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office said he allegedly drove on the sidewalk, in the middle turn lane, ran red lights, and reached speeds faster than 100 mph as he evaded officers. While at the intersection of Van Dyke and Nine Mile, the suspect hit two vehicles, including one being driven by 71-year-old Wendy Drew. That woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Grier fled his crashed car on foot, but was caught. He was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree fleeing police, and assaulting/resisting/obstructing police, and remanded to the Macomb County Jail. "This matter is a prime example of the peril that results from a driver failing to stop for police. It is a terrible tragedy that an innocent woman was killed. The Warren Police Department can be commended for their efforts to protect the public and prevent what could have been an even greater loss of life," Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido said. "The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office will prosecute the defendant to the fullest extent of the law." Macomb County mom sentenced to 24-50 years in prison in son's starvation death

A mother charged in the starvation death of her 2-year-old son two years ago was sentenced to 24 years to 50 years in state prison on second-degree murder, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office and court records. Sierra Pearl Zaitona, 29, was sentenced April 9 in Macomb County Circuit Court. She pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and second-degree child abuse in February. She was sentenced to 43 months to 10 years in prison on the child abuse charge, with the sentences to run concurrently, according to a release from the prosecutor's office. She received credit for 754 days, or more than two years, that she served in the county jail, according to online court records. The records indicate Zaitona also must register and comply with Wyatt's Law, which provides greater access to the Central Registry for Child Abuse and Neglect, which is maintained by the state health department's Children's Services Agency. "Ms. Zaitona deeply regrets the tragic loss of her son and mourns him every day. She endured a severe and prolonged domestic violence situation, which tragically delayed her ability to secure safety for herself and her children. Ms. Zaitona has fully accepted responsibility for her role in these events and is prepared to serve the sentence imposed by the court," her attorney, Marissa Kulcsar, an assistant county public defender, wrote in an email Friday to the Free Press. An entire family is also permanently impacted in a terrible way. Our thoughts are with the family during this incredibly difficult time. We hope this resolution brings some measure of healing and closure while providing justice for the victim." The boy's father, Jonathon Matthew Cheek, 27, was sentenced in December after he pleaded no contest to the same charges in the same court. He also was sentenced to 24 years to 50 years in prison on a second-degree murder charge. As with Cheek, a circuit judge adhered to a sentence agreement between Zaitona and the county prosecutor's office for 24 years to 50 years in prison with credit for time served in the county jail. The boy was found dead in his crib March 16, 2023, in Clinton Township, the prosecutor's office said, indicating previously that the medical examiner determined the boy's cause of death was starvation. A release from the prosecutor's office in March 2024 indicated Zaitona found her son dead in his crib, and Cheek was at his mother's house visiting when the boy was found dead. After the death, he returned to his home, according to the release. Contact Christina Hall: chall@ Follow her on X, formerly Twitter: @challreporter. Support local journalism. Prosecutors: St. Clair Shores man accused of killing mom with broken broomstick handle

A St. Clair Shores man killed his mother by beating her with a broken broomstick handle, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. Armando Jourdain Streeter, 46, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of second-degree murder and assault with intent to murder, both of which carry a life sentence upon conviction, a prosecutor's office news release said. It indicates Streeter is accused of killing his 76-year-old mother, with whom he lived, on Saturday. He was being held in the Macomb County Jail without bond after arraignment in 40th District Court in St. Clair Shores. No attorney was listed for Streeter in online court records, which indicate he was represented by appointed counsel and that there was a request for appointed counsel following arraignment. Court records also indicate Streeter was referred for a competency evaluation. A probable cause conference is scheduled for April 15. In his office's release, County Prosecutor Peter Lucido called the allegations "extremely serious and deeply concerning. This terrible act of violence cannot be tolerated, and we will fully pursue justice to the full extent of the law." According to an online story by the Macomb Daily, a detective sergeant told the judge that dispatchers received a call from Streeter's brother saying he found his mother dead in the bedroom "with the end of a broomstick impaled in one of her eyes." A man matching Streeter's full name, age and year of birth was discharged from state prison in January 2024 after serving time on charges of assault with intent to murder and a felony firearms offense from a case in Wayne County in 2001. He was sentenced in 2002 after a jury conviction, according to Michigan Department of Corrections online records. Contact Christina Hall: chall@ Follow her on X, formerly Twitter: @challreporter.
