BSF Eastern Command reviews operational preparedness through technology modernisation

Kolkata The Border Security Force (BSF) Eastern Command has reviewed its operational preparedness, focusing on illegal migration, trans-border crimes, and border management challenges, with emphasis on technological modernisation and cooperation with state police and Border Guard Bangladesh. A Field Commanders' Conference was held at the Headquarters of SPL DG (Eastern Command), BSF Kolkata on Friday (July 4, 2025) to discuss border preparedness and cooperation between stakeholders. The high-level meeting was chaired by Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, Additional Director General (EC), in which all the Inspector Generals of six Frontiers and two training institutions, and other top officials were present. 'The ADG directed the field formations to be prepared for all the contingencies in terms of Operations and Logistics. He tasked the commanders to focus on pending land acquisition cases and to complete the same with a mission mode, so that fencing be erected at unfenced areas. He stressed upon effective border management at Sunderbans,' an official statement from the BSF Eastern Command Headquarters said after the conference. The ADG asked commanders to 'leave no stone unturned' in upholding border integrity and encouraged the adoption of new-age technology to help with better and effective border security management. The officials also discussed on the increased importance of joint operations with State Police, intelligence agencies, and central security forces, while also encouraging commanders to strengthen grassroots relationships with border communities, calling them 'the invisible sentinels who amplify the force's vigilance.' A detailed analysis of crime data and emerging trans-border trends, offering valuable insights into changing patterns of illegal migration, narcotics trafficking, and cattle smuggling was also conducted during the meeting. This comes as multiple reports of smuggling and illegal border crossing has come to fore in the last few months in the Eastern States of India where the country shares thousands of kilometres of border with Bangladesh. Major emphasis was put on analysing existing data and patterns to predict future threats and mitigating them beforehand to enhance border security.

A BSF spokesman said that during his four-day visit (June 24-27), Aggarwal, a senior IPS officer, interacted with field commanders and jawans to assess the situation along the India-Bangladesh border. According to a release, ADG Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, who is on a four-day visit to Tripura, interacted with BSF jawans and field commanders, taking stock of the security scenario and reviewing operational preparedness. ADG addressed a Sainik Sammelan at BSF Salbagan. Lauding the tireless efforts and dedication of BSF officers and men in safeguarding the borders in Tripura, he emphasised the importance of good health, physical fitness, and discipline. Shillong, June 1 (UNI) Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, Additional Director General (ADG) of the Border Security Force (BSF) Eastern Command, reviewed the current security scenario along the India-Bangladesh international border during his visit to the Border Security Force, Meghalya Frontier, a BSF official said. Aggarwal wrapped up a four-day visit to Meghalaya on Sunday after visiting several Border Outposts (BOPs) in the West Jaintia Hills district and East Khasi Hills district and interacted with BSF personnel stationed in remote and challenging locations. He commended the troops for their dedication and resilience amid difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions. While addressing the officers of BSF Frontier Meghalaya, Aggarwal emphasised the importance of maintaining high morale, constant vigilance, and professionalism. He also highlighted the critical role of civic action programs in strengthening ties with border communities. In addition to operational reviews, the BSF Eastern Command Chief held meetings with senior officials of the civil and police administration to enhance inter-agency coordination and ensure seamless security management in the region. Inspector General of BSF, Meghalaya Frontier, O P Upadhyay briefed Aggarwal on the prevailing border situation, recent anti-smuggling operations, deployment strategies, and coordination efforts with local authorities. He reviewed the measures taken to prevent illegal infiltration and exfiltration, and appreciated the force's success in curbing cross-border activities. The BSF Eastern Command Chief also called on Meghalaya Governor, Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar, at Raj Bhavan, where he briefed him on the current security landscape and BSF's proactive measures along the international boundary. Aggarwal later met Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang to discuss administrative cooperation, logistical support for BSF operations, and joint efforts to maintain peace and order in the sensitive border region.
