More than 60,000 people have been displaced from their homes and villages who are staying in relief camps in different districts.The ethnic violence between the non-tribals Meiteis and tribal Kuki-Zo broke out in the northeastern state on May 3, 2023, after a ' Tribal Solidarity March ' was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

"The only mistake I made in my life is growing fast in politics," Prajwal, arrested in May last year upon his arrival from Germany, said. The special court for MPs/MLAs Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat on Friday had convicted the 34-year-old Prajwal in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases registered against him. The court is likely to pronounce the quantum of sentence on Saturday. The case pertains to a 48-year-old woman who was working as a help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Hassan district's Holenarasipura. She was allegedly raped twice -- at Hassan farm house and Bengaluru residence-- in 2021 and the act recorded by the accused on his mobile phone. Union Minister stresses coordination to fast-track ROB projects in Guntur
Coordination between Central, State and local authorities is essential to complete Road Over Bridge (ROB) projects quickly and transform Guntur into a traffic-free city within two years, said Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar on Saturday (August 2). He was chairing a review meeting at his camp office in Guntur with railway officials, municipal authorities and local legislators to assess the progress of seven sanctioned ROBs. Mr. Pemmasani said that the ROBs are in various stages, some under construction, others in tender or awaiting land acquisition and technical clearance. He emphasised that all hurdles must be addressed with urgency and unity to ensure timely completion. Key discussions focused on Nehru Nagar, Syamalnagar and Sanjeevaiah Nagar ROBs. Guntur East MLA Mohammad Naseer Ahmad highlighted the decades-old Nehru Nagar ROB issue and said railway officials have agreed to expedite work and sanctioned ₹7 crore for expansion. He has his own reasons for saying it. My concern is much more that our relationship with the US, as a strategic and economic partnership, is important for us.' The Congress leader said India must protect its strong trade ties with the US, emphasising that America is one of the country's biggest export markets, with around $90 billion worth of goods going there annually. 'We are exporting something like 90 billion worth of goods to America. We can't therefore be in a position where we are going to lose that or have it diminish significantly. Some people say Oh, that is only 2 per cent of our GDP, but in terms of percentage of our exports, America is one of our largest markets,' he claimed. On the issue of tariffs, Shashi Tharoor backed India's trade negotiators, saying, 'When we look at the tariff question, we must wish our negotiators strength and courage in working out a fair deal for India.' 'We should also be talking to other regions for exporting our goods. Then we could make up for some of what we might lose in the US. We have to support our negotiators,' Tharoor added. Donald Trump recently stirred controversy by calling India's economy 'dead' while announcing new 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods.
