BSF Eastern Command reviews operational preparedness through technology modernisation
The Border Security Force (BSF) Eastern Command has reviewed its operational preparedness, focusing on illegal migration, trans-border crimes, and border management challenges, with emphasis on technological modernisation and cooperation with state police and Border Guard Bangladesh.
A Field Commanders' Conference was held at the Headquarters of SPL DG (Eastern Command), BSF Kolkata on Friday (July 4, 2025) to discuss border preparedness and cooperation between stakeholders. The high-level meeting was chaired by Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, Additional Director General (EC), in which all the Inspector Generals of six Frontiers and two training institutions, and other top officials were present.
'The ADG directed the field formations to be prepared for all the contingencies in terms of Operations and Logistics. He tasked the commanders to focus on pending land acquisition cases and to complete the same with a mission mode, so that fencing be erected at unfenced areas. He stressed upon effective border management at Sunderbans,' an official statement from the BSF Eastern Command Headquarters said after the conference.
The ADG asked commanders to 'leave no stone unturned' in upholding border integrity and encouraged the adoption of new-age technology to help with better and effective border security management.
The officials also discussed on the increased importance of joint operations with State Police, intelligence agencies, and central security forces, while also encouraging commanders to strengthen grassroots relationships with border communities, calling them 'the invisible sentinels who amplify the force's vigilance.'
A detailed analysis of crime data and emerging trans-border trends, offering valuable insights into changing patterns of illegal migration, narcotics trafficking, and cattle smuggling was also conducted during the meeting. This comes as multiple reports of smuggling and illegal border crossing has come to fore in the last few months in the Eastern States of India where the country shares thousands of kilometres of border with Bangladesh.
Major emphasis was put on analysing existing data and patterns to predict future threats and mitigating them beforehand to enhance border security.

He hailed the security forces for working tirelessly to stop the cross-border drug trafficking. 'In 2024, 283 drones carrying heroin, weapons and ammunition were seized. As many as 137 drones have been seized this year. The anti-drone system will be deployed along the border from Pathankot to Fazilka as the second line of defence in coordination with the BSF,' he said. The chief minister said that any drone entering the state through the border can be immediately neutralised. Previously, the Punjab Police did not have any such system to neutralise drones. He also said these systems come with automated alert technology, which immediately notifies authorities upon detecting drone movement, thus eliminating the need for manual monitoring. He said that to ensure the successful implementation of this advanced system, coordination will be maintained with BSF, the Indian Air Force, the army and other agencies. Mann said that the anti-drug curriculum has been already introduced in schools under the 'war against drugs' campaign with an aim to make eight lakh students aware of the menace.

Punjab first state to deploy anti-drone system along int'l border
Tarn Taran: Chief minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal flagged off an anti-drone system (ADS) named 'Baaj Akh' on Saturday, With this, Punjab has become the first state in the country to deploy such a system along the international border. While talking to mediapersons, Kejriwal alleged that previous regimes colluded with drug smugglers, allowing this curse to strengthen in the state. "Now a massive crackdown has been launched against drugs, and big fish involved in this trade have been put behind bars," he said. He said that the anti-drone system has been launched to eliminate the supply of drugs from across the border. He mentioned that three ADS units had been launched, and six others would be launched very soon to make Punjab free from this scourge. He said properties acquired by drug smugglers through the illegal drug trade were being demolished. Without naming anyone, he said the most notorious and feared drug lord had been put behind bars. Meanwhile, Mann said under the 'War Against Drugs' (Yudh Nasheyan Virud) campaign, Punjab on Saturday launched a battle to stop drug smuggling from across the border. "Punjab shares a 553-km border with Pakistan, which is considered one of the most sensitive zones for the smuggling of narcotics and weapons. To strengthen border security and tackle the challenges posed by drone-based smuggling, nine anti-drone units are being set up along the international border," said Mann, adding that an amount of Rs 51.4 crore is being spent on these units. He said although the armed forces, including Border Security Force (BSF), have already been using such systems, Punjab is the first state in the country to deploy anti-drone systems along the international border. "The ADS will give a strong response to drug smugglers from across the border, adding that anti-national elements always use technology for anti-social activities," he said. Video: BSF, Meghalaya Cops Pursue, Arrest Armed Bangladeshi Gang
Guwahati: Four Bangladeshi nationals who allegedly attacked an Indian villager at a border area in Meghalaya have been arrested by the Border Security Force (BSF). Visuals of the aftermath of the operation to capture the four Bangladeshi suspects show the BSF questioning them in a forest. The police said the "brazen attack" on the villager happened at night on Friday. Balsrang A Marak, who runs a shop near the border with Bangladesh, was sleeping when eight-nine armed men entered his shop and kidnapped him, the police said. Mr Marak alleged the "Bangladeshi gang" handcuffed him and marched him toward the border. He said he was sure they would have slit his throat. As they were walking in the dark, he managed to sprint away and run inside the first house he could find in the area. The gang fired shots toward him, the shopkeeper said. The BSF along with the police immediately launched an operation and captured three Bangladeshi suspects. The police fired two warning rounds in the air as the suspects began running toward Bangladesh. They were surrounded and arrested. Villagers caught another suspect. Before the police reached them, the four Bangladeshi nationals managed to throw away their weapons, cash, mobile phones and the identity card of a Bangladeshi policeman. All of these have been recovered, the police said. The four Bangladeshi nationals who crossed into India and attacked a villager at night The BSF and the Meghalaya Police are continuing the operation to find the rest of the gang. "This season has seen a surge in cattle smuggling, with criminals using violent attacks on BSF personnel during interception attempts. Large stretches of the border remain riverine and difficult to patrol, creating an opportunity for miscreants to exploit the terrain," Inspector General OP Upadhyay said, adding there is a growing threat from smugglers and organised crime networks operating along the Indo-Bangladesh border. "These people not only engage in cattle trafficking but also make illegal incursions into Indian territory to loot natural resources such as sand and stone. The BSF has intensified vigilance to curb these crimes, deploying specialised teams and advanced technology to monitor river channels and intercept cross-border movements," Mr Upadhyay said. The four suspects have been identified as Mefus Rehman, 35; Jangir Alom, 25; Meruphur Rahman, 32, and Saem Hussain, 30.
