(Picture credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: All India Mahila Congress chief Alka Lamba on Wednesday announced that women from deprived sections in Bihar will receive Rs 2,500 per month if the Mahagathbandhan alliance forms the next government in the state. The promise backs RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav's 'Mai Behan Maan' scheme, first unveiled in February. Speaking at a press conference in Patna, Lamba criticised the NDA governments at the Centre and in Bihar, accusing them of neglecting women's welfare. 'The Congress and our Mahagathbandhan allies are committed to women's empowerment. If we win the upcoming elections, Rs 2,500 per month will be directly transferred to eligible women by the state government,' she said, as per PTI. Lamba said the scheme will be implemented 'immediately' after the alliance takes power, citing similar initiatives rolled out by Congress governments in Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh. To facilitate enrollment, party workers will distribute registration forms across the state. Additionally, a mobile number (8800023525) has been issued for women to register via missed call. Targeting the current Bihar administration, Lamba said, 'The state is giving only Rs 400 to poor women, and even that is irregular. Yet, the government remains a mute spectator.' Responding to questions on Tejashwi Yadav's earlier announcement, Bihar Congress president Rajesh Ram clarified that 'Mai Behan Maan' is a joint Mahagathbandhan initiative. 'It's not a scheme of any one party. The decision was taken by our alliance's coordination committee. All partners will work together to build voter awareness,' he said, as reported by PTI. Ram added that Congress was the first to implement this model in Karnataka and Himachal, and similar initiatives were run by the Mahagathbandhan government in Jharkhand. Reacting sharply to the announcement, BJP spokesperson Neeraj Kumar alleged that Mahagathbandhan parties are 'fighting for credit' and 'misleading voters.' In February, Tejashwi Yadav had promised Rs 2,500 per month to women if his party returned to power. He has also pledged 200 units of free electricity and LPG cylinders at Rs500, criticising Nitish Kumar's leadership and accusing the government of corruption, unemployment and lawlessness. 'The CM is tired. Retired officers are looting the treasury. Administrative anarchy prevails,' Yadav had said, adding that Bihar tops 'all the wrong charts.' The announcement comes as political temperatures rise in the state ahead of the 2025 Assembly polls.

Bihar's women to get Rs 2,500 monthly stipend if 'Mahagathbandhan govt' formed, says Congress
All India Mahila Congress chief Alka Lamba on Wednesday announced that the women of Bihar will get a monthly stipend of Rs 2,500 if the Mahagathbandhan, of which her party is a constituent, comes to power in the state after the assembly polls due later this year. Lamba made the promise during a press conference here, backing to the hilt the ' Mai Behan Maan ' scheme which was visualised by her alliance partner Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD a few months ago. "The NDA governments at the Centre as well as in the state are least bothered about the welfare of the people, especially women. But the Congress and the alliance partners of the Mahagathbandhan are concerned about them. If the Mahagathbandhan comes to power in the upcoming elections in Bihar, Rs 2,500 per month will be provided by the state government to women belonging to deprived sections," she said. The condition of women in Bihar's rural areas is very pathetic... crimes against women have increased substantially but the state government is remaining a mute spectator," she alleged. When asked about a similar scheme already announced by Tejashwi Yadav, Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Ram told reporters, "Let me make it very clear... it's a scheme of the Mahagathbandhan. Workers of all alliance partners will work towards creating awareness among voters about the scheme, which will be implemented after the formation of the government." "This decision was taken in a recently held meeting of the coordination committee of the Mahagathbandhan for Bihar. This is not a scheme of any particular party," he added. However, it is true that the scheme was first implemented by the Congress in Karnataka and then in Himachal Pradesh, and a similar scheme was also implemented by the Mahagatbandhan government in Jharkhand, Ram said. Reacting to the announcement, state BJP spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said, "Today's announcement of 'Mai Behan Maan' scheme by the Congress reveals how parties of the Mahagathbandhan are fighting each other for taking credit for the scheme. They are simply misleading the electorate." Tejashwi Yadav had in February this year announced that if his party came to power in the elections, Rs 2,500 per month would be transferred by the state government into the bank accounts of women belonging to deprived sections.

Bihar polls: Tejashwi Yadav promises Rs 2,500 for women, 200 units of free electricity if RJD wins
NEW DELHI: RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday pledged a series of welfare schemes if his party returns to power in Bihar in the assembly polls scheduled for later this year. Taking a cue from the Bharatiya Janata Party's playbook, Tejashwi announced a monthly cash transfer of Rs 2,500 to women under a proposed initiative called the Mai Behan Maan scheme. The former Bihar deputy CM also announced that his party will provide 200 units of free electricity and subsidised gas cylinders for Rs 500. Addressing a press conference, Tejashwi also criticised chief minister Nitish Kumar, claiming the current administration is exhausted and disconnected from the ground reality. 'The chief minister is tired and unable to see the truth. Retired officers have only one job now to loot the state treasury. Administrative anarchy prevails,' he said. Yadav accused the ruling alliance of failing to address core issues such as poverty, unemployment, and migration. 'Bihar ranks number one in all the wrong areas,' he said, blaming two decades of JDU-led rule. The RJD leader expressed confidence that the public will bring an end to what he described as a crumbling and outdated government. Tejashwi has been vocal in recent months, sharply criticising Nitish and the ruling NDA. In a video released on social media, Yadav alleged rising corruption, unemployment, and crime, accusing the government of failing the people. He claimed that after 20 years of BJP-JD(U) rule, Bihar is ready for change. Yadav also accused the BJP of "misusing" Nitish Kumar's image while effectively controlling the state government. He went further to allege that JD(U) leader Lalan Singh is mentally aligned with the BJP. In response, Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary defended the NDA's record, highlighting progress in infrastructure, electricity, and healthcare. JD(U) spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad rejected Yadav's allegations, citing employment figures and improved law and order. He added that Bihar has seen reverse migration, unlike during the "jungle raj" under RJD rule.
