Fake doctor in Assam handles 50 caesarean sections in a decade, held
GUWAHATI: The Assam police arrested a fake doctor after he allegedly handled several pregnancy cases and performed more than 50 caesarean sections for a decade. The accused, Pulak Malakar, hails from southern Assam's Barak Valley. The locals knew him as an obstetrician and gynaecologist. He practised at a private hospital in Silchar of Cachar district. According to reports, Malakar worked as a fourth-grade employee in various hospitals prior to becoming a doctor with a forged MBBS certificate, allegedly obtained from a racket by shelling out a huge amount of money. The accused was arrested two days ago. He was produced in a local court and it sent him to a six-day police remand. Senior Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta told the media the police had received inputs about the man treating patients by using a fake degree. A resultant investigation revealed his certificate from a government medical college in Odisha was forged.

After 50 C-sections in 10 years, doc with fake degree lands in cop net
1 2 Guwahati/Silchar: A fake doctor, who performed atleast 50 C-section and gynaecological surgeries over a decade at two private hospitals in Silchar , has finally landed in police net after being caught in the act. The accused, Pulok Malakar, was produced before a local court on Monday, which remanded him in five-day police custody. He was arrested a day earlier. Malakar, claimed to possess an MBBS degree and a CDM Pune qualification. CDM Pune refers to a certificate in disaster management course offered through distance and open learning. Malakar is the 50th fake doctor caught in the state under an initiative of one Dr Abhijit Neog, who is now the vigilance officer of the anti-quackery cell under the Assam Council of Medical Registration. While fake doctors have been caught from various parts of the state over the years, including the capital Guwahati, the arrest of Malakar was the first case where a fake doctor was apprehended for conducting major surgeries. The quack was nabbed while performing a caesarean section at a private hospital in Silchar. The accused is from Badrpurghat in Sribhumi district and reportedly masqueraded as a qualified medical practitioner for an extended period at the hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He allegedly conducted surgeries and offered various treatments at the autonomous charitable hospital from where he was arrested. "From a reliable source, our cell got the information that he was performing a surgery at the hospital," Dr Neog told TOI on Monday. Prior to the arrest, a zero FIR was lodged by Dr Neog on July 30 at the CID police station in Guwahati. He said prior to lodging the FIR, the anti-quackery cell, after investigation, found that Malakar did not have any medical qualification. "He does not have a valid registration number as a doctor. CDM is a six-month correspondence course offered by IGNOU and has nothing to do with medical science," Dr Neog added. Police sources revealed that Malakar submitted certificates claiming to have medical qualifications from the Odisha Council of Medical Registration and Utkal University. However, preliminary verification suggests that the documents were dubious and not legally tenable. Officials said the conditions of the patients operated on by Malakar will be examined following the seizure of hospital records. Sources said while tea gardens, semi-urban, and rural areas are vulnerable to the menace of fake doctors, the recent arrest of several quacks from Guwahati raised concern among the patients in the state capital as well. It may be noted that the hospital from where Malakar was nabbed on Sunday evening was founded in 1931, one of the oldest in Silchar. This hospital has a long-standing reputation for serving the poor and underprivileged in the northeast, especially women and children. The exposure of such a serious lapse has dented the hospital's credibility and raised questions about oversight and verification protocols, officials said.

Former Congress MLA Shankar Malakar joins Trinamool, hits out at Grand Old Party
In a major blow to Congress in West Bengal, former Congress MLA Shankar Malakar has joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Malakar, an influential figure among the Scheduled Caste community in the North Bengal region, formally joined the TMC in the presence of senior leaders Subrata Bakshi and Aroop Biswas."I have decided to join the TMC as this is the only party which is fighting against the BJP and its communal politics in Bengal. Congress can't defeat BJP in Bengal and there is no future of Pradesh Congress in Bengal." Malakar said, explaining his decision to switch parties. He expressed dissatisfaction with the Congress, stating that the party lacks direction and grassroots connect in the move is seen as a strategic win for the TMC, which has historically struggled to gain ground in north Bengal. His experience and deep community ties are expected to help the party strengthen its organisational presence in the region. "I will work closely with the leadership to strengthen the organisation in north Bengal," Malakar said. Political observers view his switch as a calculated move by the TMC to bolster its presence among Scheduled Caste communities. Malakar's entry into the TMC comes after former Union minister John Barla joined the party last month, potentially expanding its footprint among tea garden workers and Adivasi communities."The TMC's growth in north Bengal has been slow, but with the right strategy and connection with the people, Malakar and Barla's induction can turn the tide," said political analyst Biswanath Chakraborty. Street dancer heckled for singing ‘Allah ke bande' at Tripura temple, CPI(M) seeks action
AGARTALA: A street dancer was allegedly heckled for singing Kailash Kher's 'Allah ke bande' at the famous Tripurasundari temple in Tripura's Gomati district, sparking political outrage. The opposition CPI(M) on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, demanding swift action from the state government and accusing it of fostering an atmosphere of intolerance. The video of the incident that went viral on social media on Sunday shows the street dancer, Shanu Malakar, is purportedly being threatened by another person (not seen in the video) and questioned him for his choice of song on the temple premises, saying that praise of Allah could not be done at a temple. In the video, Malakar is seen replying that he does street dance performances to raise funds for donations to the poor. In reference to the video, CPIM politburo member and leader of opposition Jitendra Chaudhury said, 'A youth, Sanu Malakar, a local singer who also earns money through his street dance performances and displaying physical acrobatics, was seen, in a social media video, singing the song which is devotional as well to appeal for humanity. A person threatened him in front of a huge gathering and questioned him why he uttered Allah. I appeal to the state government and the police to step in at the earliest.' He further said that the person who threatened Malakar did so by declaring that this is 'Hindustan", claiming that those who worship Allah or follow that faith are 'jihadis", and asserting that such songs have no place on Indian soil. Asserting that every Indian has constitutionally approved right to express their opinions through devotional songs of any religion, be it Hindu, Muslim, Christian or Buddhist, Chaudhury said the state government and police didn't take any action against the perpetrators till now. 'We often see that several people were arrested with different charges after the Pahalgam terror attack, and harassing them for 10-12 days... Why has no arrest been made here?' Chaudhury asked. Reacting to the incident, BJP state spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya said, 'It's natural that neither Azaan can be performed in temples nor Durga Puja can be performed in mosques.' A senior police officer stated, 'We have seen the video as well, but so far, no one has come forward to lodge a complaint.' Last year, the Gomati district magistrate served a notice prohibiting shooting of any such dance, music videos, reels and posting on social media after netizens raise objections against objectionable dance performances by social media influencers in Tripurasundari temple.
