Spin To Win In Australia Vs South Africa Series Decider?
Last Updated: Australia faces South Africa in a T20I series decider at Cazaly's Stadium, the first men's T20I at this venue. Spin may play a crucial role in the match. On Saturday night, Australia will find themselves in unusual territory as they face South Africa in a T20I series decider at a sold-out Cazaly's Stadium. While the Proteas were in a similar situation just three weeks ago in the T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe, Australia have not played a series-deciding match since September 2022, with several series in that period either decided before the final game or disrupted by rain. The clash will also mark the first men's T20I at this venue, adding an element of uncertainty for both teams as they prepare for the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup. The stadium last hosted international cricket in a 2022 ODI series, where spin proved effective — Adam Zampa took 5-35 against New Zealand, while a BBL game at the ground that year saw left-arm spinners Matthew Kuhnemann and West Indies' Akeal Hosein claim three wickets each. This history of favouring spinners could tempt both sides to include extra spin options. Australia are forced into at least one change, with Mitchell Owen ruled out due to concussion. Josh Inglis (flu) and Nathan Ellis (rested) are expected to return, while all-rounder Aaron Hardie could slot in at number seven, potentially allowing for a two-spinner combination alongside Zampa. If that happens, it could mean one of Josh Hazlewood, Sean Abbott, or Ben Dwarshuis misses out, especially with an ODI series approaching. South Africa, meanwhile, must decide whether to maintain the pace-heavy attack that secured victory in the second T20I in Darwin or bring back a left-arm spinner like George Linde or Senuran Muthusamy. Trio rewarded as Australia announce new names in national contract list
Young batter Sam Konstas, spinner Matthew Kuhnemann and all-rounder Beau Webster are the big winners as Cricket Australia announced their list of 23 men's players to be offered national contracts for 2025-26. The trio are all included on an updated list of 23 players with national contract, with all-rounder Aaron Hardie, pacer Sean Abbott and spinner Todd Murphy the three players to lose their contract for the coming 12 months. There is also no place for young duo Cooper Connolly or Jake Fraser-McGurk ahead of next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Every Sam Konstas boundary | U19 CWC 2024 Konstas won his national contract on the back of an impressive debut series against India during the battle for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, while Kuhnemann is rewarded following an outstanding effort in Australia's series triumph over Sri Lanka in the sub-continent. Webster displayed his all-round talents with an excellent contribution with both bat and ball on Test debut against India in Sydney and backed that up with during two further Test appearances in Sri Lanka. Selection Chair George Bailey believes the trio all deserves their contracts and is now looking forward to some strong competition for spots ahead of Australia's appearance in this year's ICC World Test Championship Final against South Africa at Lord's in June, an away Test series in the West Indies from July and the eagerly awaited visit of England for the Ashes on home soil later this year. 'Matt was outstanding once again in Sri Lanka and we believe he can play a key role across the next 18 months," Bailey said. 'In Beau's case he proved more than comfortable at Test level with bat and ball, adds an additional dimension in the field and to the balance of the side. Aussie spin star breaks silence on ICC probe
Australia off-spinner Matthew Kuhnemann says he has 'never doubted' his bowling action after being cleared by the International Cricket Council. Kuhnemann's action was under investigation after leading Australia's attack to a 2-0 trouncing of Sri Lanka. Kuhnemann underwent biomechanical testing in Brisbane to prove his left arm did not bend more than 15 degrees. It was reported the majority of Kuhnemann's tested deliveries fell under 10 degrees. Kuhnemann says he is looking forward to putting the process behind him and getting back to playing Sheffield Shield cricket for Tasmania. 'I am very grateful for all the support I have received from my family, friends and teammates and to Cricket Australia who stood by me throughout the process,' he said. Cricket writer Ben Horne unpacks the shock news that Matthew Kuhnemann has been reported for a suspect bowling action, and what's next for the Aussie spinner. 'It was a disappointing way to finish what was such a successful Test series for Australia. 'I've never doubted my bowling action throughout my career and I'm always looking to improve the art of spin bowling in different conditions. 'I thought the process itself was quite fair and I appreciated the professional manner in which testing was explained to me and then conducted. 'I'm looking forward to finishing the season with Tasmania once my thumb has fully healed and then getting into my off-field preparations.' Australia does not play another Test until the World Test Championship final in June.
