Washington DC [US], August 12 (ANI): The Handmaid's Tale star Max Minghella is in final talks to join the cast of Clayface, the next DC Studios movie, reported The Hollywood Reporter. Minghella will star alongside Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie in the horror film, which will be directed by Speak No Evil filmmaker James Watkins. The movie will begin filming this fall in the to the publication, Clayface is based on a Batman villain who can change his appearance. The film, written by Mike Flanagan, is described as a body-horror thriller with similarities to the 1986 movie The story follows an up-and-coming actor (Harries) whose face is badly disfigured by a gangster. In desperation, he turns to a scientist (Ackie) for help. Minghella will play a Gotham City police detective who is in a relationship with the per The Hollywood Reporter, the film is expected to have a budget of around $40 million and is set to release on September 11, is best known for playing Nick Blaine in The Handmaid's Tale, a role that earned him an Emmy nomination. Max Minghella is in talks to star in Clayface. The Handmaid's Tale actor is set to join Tom Rhys Harries - who takes the title role in James Watkins' upcoming movie - and Naomi Ackie in the comic book movie centred around the Batman villain, though Deadline reports he hasn't yet closed a deal. It is currrently unclear what role Max is in line to play. The body horror thriller is focused on the supervillain and his appearance-altering powers, with comparisons to the feel and structure of 1986 classic The Fly. That film followed a relationship between a scientist (Jeff Goldblum) fused with the DNA of a fly, and the journalist (Geena Davis) writing about the discovery. For Clayface, a B-movie actor's life is changed for ever when his face gets disfigured by a gangster. He desperately seeks out a scientist for help, and while the experiment is initially a success, things take a sinister turn. The film is slated to shoot at Warner Bros. Leavesden studio in the UK later this year as it marches towards its September 2026 release date. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Clayface will be a 'stripped down movie', with a budget of approximately $40 million. DC Studios boss and Superman director James Gunn recently opened up on his vision for the wider cinematic universe, and insisted there can't be a set style or genre across each film. He told CBS Mornings: "We've got Clayface, which is a totally different thing. Although it's in the same universe, it's a complete horror film. "That's one of the things we want to do. There's not a company style. It's not like every movie is going to be like Superman. "The artists — the directors and the writers — each one will bring their own sense to it… "That's what we want to bring to the films because we don't want people to get bored. We want to invigorate people." Gunn and fellow DC Studios chief Peter Safran will produce Clayface, along with Lynn Harris and The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves, while Chantal Nong will executive produce. Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan wrote the first version of the screenplay, with Hossein Amini pitching with additional drafts.

The outlet reports that Minghella is being looked at to play a character named John, 'a detective and fiancé to Caitlin Bates, who's suspicious of his fiancée's relationship with Matt Hagen/Clayface.' Nexus Point News further reports that Mickey 17's Naomi Ackie has now officially been offered the role of Caitlin, who will be Hagen's love interest and doctor. Minghella is best known for playing Nick Blaine in The Handmaid's Tale, a role that earned him a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2021. He's also recognized for playing Divya Narendra in 2010's The Social Network, while his filmography further includes 2011's The Ides of March, 2013's Horns, 2016's The 9th Life of Louis Drax, 2021's Spiral, and 2022's Babylon. The script for the DCU Clayface movie comes from Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House) and Hossein Amini. James Gunn has previously confirmed that the movie is being made to receive an R-rating. Watkins has previously directed movies such as 2008's Eden Lake, 2012's The Woman in Black, 2016's Bastille Day, and 2024's Speak No Evil, while he additionally helmed the 'Shut Up and Dance' episode of Black Mirror and was a second unit director on 2009's The Descent Part 2. Clayface hits United States theaters on September 11, 2026. Prior to that, the next DCU project will be Peacemaker Season 2, which premieres on HBO Max later this month, while Lanterns and Supergirl are also both coming out in 2026.
