The new Mazda CX-5 is due to arrive in the second half of 2026. Image: Supplied Hot on the heels of its global debut earlier this month, Mazda South Africa has confirmed the local launch timing and other details about the third-generation CX-5. The newly redesigned SUV will hit our shores during the second half of 2026, although final launch dates are still pending, Mazda SA's marketing head Deolinda Da Costa revealed. She also confirmed that local versions will be powered by a 2.5-litre normally aspirated petrol engine. In overseas markets, this motor produces 132kW and 252Nm, pairing up with a six-speed automatic gearbox. Rear styling resembles the CX-60. Image: Supplied Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Although pricing will only be confirmed closer to launch, the presumed discontinuation of the current 2.0-litre engine and the third-generation vehicle's larger size - with overall length growing by 115mm - are likely to push it upmarket. The current CX-5 costs between R570,500 and R688,400. Da Costa also confirmed that mild hybrid versions could follow at a later date, but initially, the company would focus on the 'robust' regular 2.5L engine as it aligns with local driving preferences and conditions. ''The next-generation CX-5 marks a significant milestone for Mazda globally. While we look forward to introducing it locally, we're equally committed to delivering outstanding value and features with our current lineup.' The CX-5 houses Mazda's largest ever touchscreen. Image: Supplied While local specifications have yet to be revealed, overseas, the vehicle offers an enhanced range of driver assistance and safety features. Customers can also look forward to increased interior space and comfort, Da Costa says, as well as an updated Human Machine Interface, offering streamlined control of apps, navigation and vehicle settings. In overseas markets, it is available with the largest touchscreen ever to be offered on a Mazda product, measuring 15.6 inches across. While the current Mazda CX-5 is showing its age, Mazda SA says it is offering flexible finance options on the older model through its Mazda Assured programme, which will give customers the opportunity to 'seamlessly' upgrade to the new generation model when it arrives next year. The third-gen Mazda CX-5 is one of four new models due to reach our shores by the end of 2026. IOL Motoring

Mazda confirms when it will introduce the new CX-5 in SA

Mazda has also bundled in its latest Human Machine Interface, which apparently streamlines the control of apps, navigation and vehicle settings. Infotainment duties are, depending on the model derivative, handled by a 12.9" touchscreen or a larger 15.6" version — the biggest offered inside a series production Mazda. As to be expected, an array of enhanced driver assistance and safety features are also available, but the extent of these available locally will be confirmed closer to launch. Under the bonnet, those of you expecting the option of mild-hybrid powertrains might be disappointed to hear the new CX-5 will initially only be available in South Africa with Mazda's 132kW/242Nm naturally aspirated 2.5 l four-cylinder petrol engine with SkyActiv technology. It comes meshed to a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. 'The next-generation CX-5 marks a significant milestone for Mazda globally,' said Mazda South Africa marketing and communications head Deolinda Da Costa. 'While we look forward to introducing it locally, we're equally committed to delivering outstanding value and features with our current line-up.'

New Mazda CX-5 penned-in for South Africa in second half of 2026

Initially, the CX-5 will only be powered by the normally aspirated 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G petrol engine. All-new third generation CX-5 will debuting on local soil in the second half of 2026. Image: Mazda Arriving next year as one of its key local markets models, Mazda South Africa has provided select first details of the all-new generation CX-5 revealed globally earlier this month. Details Approved back in January, the third generation CX-5 will make its arrival in the second half of next year, powered by the revised normally aspirated 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G petrol engine. Although offered with mild-hybrid assistance in Europe, Mazda Southern Africa's Head of Marketing and Communications, Deolinda Da Costa, confirmed that while the unit remains on the cards, initially, only the non-electrified petrol will be offered in a similar capacity to Australia and North America. Despite appearing shorter than the outgoing model, the new CX-5 gains all the various dimensional fronts. Image: Mazda In these markets, the free-breathing petrol will produce 132kW/242Nm and come mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox, with all-wheel-drive being standard from the start. 'We're confident in the value our current CX-5 provides. [However], the next-generation CX-5 marks a significant milestone for Mazda globally,' Da Costa said in a statement. Interior has been redesigned comparatively radically from the outgoing CX-5. Image: Mazda 'While we look forward to introducing it locally, we're equally committed to delivering outstanding value and features with our current line-up'. Longer and wider than the current, outgoing model, the CX-5 introduces a brand-new interior, and while specification will only be announced next year, items expected include Head-Up Display, the new infotainment system measuring 12.9-inches or 15.6-inches, the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and significantly revised safety and driver assistance system. More soon At the same time, Da Costa stated that the current five-year/unlimited km warranty and service plan will be retained for the new CX-5. 'From a Mazda perspective, we have seen a shift in where we position our vehicles in the South African market,' Hiroshima's CEO for South Africa, Craig Roberts, told Moneyweb in a podcast in January. As mentioned, more details will only be announced once into 2026. ALSO READ: Next Mazda CX-5 spied again as company commits to South Africa

New Mazda CX-5 confirmed for SA: What to expect in 2026

Derived from the CX-60 positioned above it, the rear facia does incorporate elements from the latter, as well as the BMW X1 when viewed from certain angles. A further new addition is the removal of the corporate Mazda logo on the boot lid replaced by a block letter MAZDA badge similar to the new Opel Grandland. 'Uncluttered' new interior Described at the time of the teaser campaign as 'human-centric' and 'uncluttered', the interior represents the biggest change from the previous CX-5 with a minimalist design modelled on that of the all-electric 6e. Besides a new steering wheel, still with albeit new physical buttons and Mazda name scripting, the infotainment display now becomes a freestanding setup in sizes of 12.9-inches or 15.6-inches. In a contradiction of previous statements, both displays are touchscreen only as the previous rotary selector dial has fallen by the wayside. Flanked by a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, the now renamed 'simplified' layout has resulted in the cabin doing away with conventional buttons for touch icons related to functions such as the climate control and audio system accessed at the base of the infotainment display. Kept, though, the traditional gear lever and 'single-piece' centre console. Upgraded materials and the first-time availability of ambient lighting rounds the interior off. Petrol and hybrid but no diesel Up front, and despite previous rumours alluding to the CX-5 following its arch rival, the new Toyota RAV4 in being powered solely by hybrid power units, the initial line-up still includes a conventional petrol engines, but only in select markets. Omitting any form of plug-in hybrid assistance, the range starts off with the existing 2.5 SkyActiv-G, now without the turbocharger offered in certain markets, and as the base engine now that the 2.0-litre has been dropped. Set to be offered in Australia and North America, the unit develops 132kW/242Nm and is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. All-wheel-drive is standard from the start. For Europe, the same engine gains a 24-volt mild-hybrid system, but with reduced outputs of 104kW/238Nm. The same transmission remains, however, buyers will the option of front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. Having been dropped towards the end of the current CX-5's lifecycle, the 2.2-litre SkyActiv-D turbodiesel engine won't be renewed and instead, will be replaced by the still under-development SkyActiv-Z hybrid in 2027. Here in 2026 On-sale in Europe, Australia and North America at the beginning of next year, the CX-5, as mentioned, has been given approval for South Africa as part of four new models the brand will debut in 2026. 'The new CX-5 will debut in the third quarter of this year and probably hit our shores in early 2026. It is the first product we are really, really excited about,' Mazda South Africa CEO Craig Roberts said in a podcast with Moneyweb earlier this year. Expect more details regarding price and specification to emerge next year.
