Will Rangers 'properly arm' Martin to challenge Celtic?
How much money will Russell Martin have to spend on new signings this summer?Chief executive Patrick Stewart says a "decent amount" of the £20m investment promised by the club's new owners will be made available for Martin's transfer Grant, chief football writer for The Times in Scotland, told the BBC's Scottish Football podcast: "Rangers have to arm him to be able to deal with Celtic."That's going to be extremely difficult for the club because when you look through the squad there's so much work to do."There's so many questions about players that are already there, the defence almost has to be rebuilt. We don't know if the midfield is going to stick together or whether a couple of assets might be sold. There's question marks about up front."All of this has to be addressed and pretty quickly. So you're immediately applying pressure on Rangers."If Martin stumbles in the first couple of games and they're behind again immediately, it seems like the same old cycle, doesn't it?"The recruitment team has to get this right, they really have to arm him properly."While Martin's appointment has not been universally welcomed by the Rangers support, Grant said: "Critics are always going to be noisier than those who back him."It's an easier default position to just say, 'Oh I don't fancy this guy, he was rubbish at Southampton.'"I think he'll pleasantly surprise a lot of Rangers supporters. They will watch him and listen to him and think, 'Oh right, this guy's got something about him.'"

Impact of speed cameras on slowing drivers on rural Stirling road praised
The findings have revealed an uptick in the number of drivers now complying with the speed limit on the stretches of the A82 and A85 after the introduction of the cameras. The introduction of average speed cameras on a stretch of road near Tyndrum has led to a "significant improvement" in driver behaviour and speeding problems. That's according to new research published by Police Scotland following the introduction of the cameras on the stretch of the A82 and A85 roads between Lix Toll and Tyndrum. The 'speed surveys' carried out on the A85 between Auchessan and Luib have shown that 9 out of every 10 vehicles are now complying with the speed limit. Cops claim this is an uptick on previous data which revealed one in three vehicles were speeding prior to the installation of the cameras. There has also been a reduction in injury collisions, with five collisions recorded between 2022-24 compared to the 21 collisions which occurred between 2014-16. Michael Grant, East Safety Camera Unit Manager, said 'Prior to the installation of average speed cameras in March 2020 and despite mobile safety camera van enforcement, the number of collisions and speed of vehicles on the A82/A85 was concerning. "It is encouraging that during the five year period since the average speed cameras began enforcing, there has been such an improvement in driver behaviour and road safety on this route. "We are now seeing nine out of every ten vehicles travelling within the speed limit and an average speed of 51.5mph, making journeys safer and more enjoyable for all road users.' The impact of the cameras was also hailed by politicians and community representatives based around the Tyndrum and wider National Park area. Gordon Watson, chief executive of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, said: 'The installation of average speed cameras on this busy route through the National Park is delivering clear and positive impact, which is welcome news. "These measures were designed to ensure responsible and considerate use of the road network, and it's encouraging to see such a strong shift towards more positive driver behaviour. "Safer roads benefit everyone, from local communities to the many people who come here to enjoy this special place. It's everyone's responsibility to play their part in protecting and enjoying the National Park, safely.' Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop added: 'Road safety is a key transport priority for the Scottish Government and I remain resolute in my determination to save lives on the country's roads. 'The results of the evaluation are very encouraging, demonstrating the positive impact this technology has had on driver behaviour along a busy section of the trunk road network. "It has clearly contributed to a reduction in the number of people killed and seriously injured on this route."

Rangers' opponents Athletic Bilbao 'strong but not brilliant'
The Times' Michael Grant thinks Athletic Bilbao's style of play could suit Rangers as the sides prepare to meet in the Europa League first leg at Ibrox is on Thursday before the return leg in Spain next week and Grant says Rangers have nothing to fear against Athletic, who sit fourth in the Spanish top beat Roma across two legs in the previous round, while Rangers got the better of Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce."You look at it and you would think that Athletic Bilbao would be a step too far, but how many times have we thought that?" Grant said on the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast. "They've done it against teams that you thought that this is going to be too strong for them."Athletic Bilbao are interesting and they're strong. don't think they're brilliant though, it has to be said. I watched their game against Villarreal at the weekend. It was fairly flat to be honest with you. "Their last three games have been 1-0, 0-0, 1-0-0. So I'm not sure there's going to be awful lot of goals at Ibrox. And that's probably going to suit Rangers because not only are they a good Europa League team, they've been a good away Europa League team. "And they might think, well, if we are still in this game after the first leg, then we've got a fighting chance in Bilbao next week."
