Michelin to remove access to health centers for retirees
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Starting next year some Michelin retirees will lose access to health centers they have been using for years. Michelin North America, which operates multiple manufacturing facilities and a corporate office in the Upstate, confirmed Monday that, beginning in 2026, Michelin Family Health Centers will only be available to active employees and their dependents. For years, Michelin has operated health clinics at certain facilities, offering primary care, urgent care, lab services, exams and preventative health programs. The clinics have historically been available to all employees, retirees and their dependents. 'We recognize that this change may impact retirees who have utilized these facilities, and we are dedicated to making this transition as smooth as possible,' said the company in a statement. 'Retirees will continue to have access to all other providers covered under their health plans, along with the additional benefits that reflect our core value of respect for people.' Retirees will continue to have access to Michelin Family Health Centers through January 1, 2026. The company said it recently informed 'eligible retirees' of the change. You can read the company's full statement below. 'At Michelin, we are committed to supporting our employees and their families. Recently, we informed eligible retirees that, effective January 1, 2026, the Michelin Family Health Centers — onsite medical facilities at select U.S. locations — will be available exclusively to active Michelin employees and their dependents.' 'We recognize that this change may impact retirees who have utilized these facilities, and we are dedicated to making this transition as smooth as possible. Retirees will continue to have access to all other providers covered under their health plans, along with the additional benefits that reflect our core value of respect for people.' South Carolina Will Host the 2025 Michelin Guide American South Ceremony
Greenville, South Carolina, is set to host the 2025 Michelin Guide ceremony for the American South. The newly extended guide will cover restaurants from Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, in addition to the existing guide in Atlanta. Winners of the coveted awards will be announced at the ceremony on November 3 at the Peace Center. Michelin North America is headquartered in Greenville, making it a fitting choice for the event. Recent expansion The guide's new presence in the region is motivated by financial backing; the new regional guide is produced in partnership with Travel South USA, a multi-state collaboration that promotes tourism across the southern U.S. The Discover South Carolina tourism board is the host for the ceremony. With its expansion in the South, the guide has added new cities across the U.S. this year, including Boston and Philadelphia joining the Northeast cities guide. In the past two years, the company has published new guides covering Texas, Colorado, and Atlanta; growing its coverage in Florida and Toronto. This is all in addition to the company's existing North American guides covering Vancouver, Mexico, California, New York City, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. Related The Price Tag to Bring the Michelin Guide to Atlanta In November, cities like Charleston and New Orleans, will discover if they've received a Michelin star or Guide distinction for the first time. The guide is seen by many as the global standard of restaurant reviews with its up to three-star rating system, with one-star considered a 'very good restaurant in its category,' two-star considered 'worthy of a detour,' and three-star deemed a 'special journey.' There is also the Bib Gourmand status, an unstarred category given to high-caliber restaurants that serve a two-course meal for around $50 a person. Restaurants in Philadelphia could soon achieve a Michelin star. The Michelin Guide is coming to Philadelphia, and its inspectors are already dining in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. Michelin North America Inc. and the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) announced a partnership Monday, revealing that Philly restaurants and chefs will be considered for the world-renowned dining guidebook. Boston is also joining the Michelin Guide. The two cities will be included in the new Northeast Cities edition along with New York City, Washington, D.C. and Chicago. Michelin inspectors are already in Philadelphia, eating at the city's restaurants. The 2025 selections will be announced during the annual Michelin Guide Northeast Cities ceremony. Restaurants can be awarded up to three stars, while the Bib Gourmand award showcases standout eateries offering meals at affordable prices. "The local passion, talent and camaraderie in both Boston and Philadelphia is evident in their restaurant communities and the anonymous Inspectors look forward to spotlighting their unique experiences in both cities," Gwendal Poullennec, the international director for Michelin Guide, said in a news release. Poullennec added that Philadelphia and Boston are both "premier destinations for gourmets to experience a rich diversity of cuisine and culinary history." "In recent years, Philadelphia has become as renowned for its chef-driven food scene as it is for the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and its passionate sports fans," Gregg Caren, the president and CEO of the PHLCVB, said. "Our chefs, restaurateurs and hospitality professionals have been steadily building our city into an internationally acclaimed foodie destination." A press conference will be held on Tuesday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at the Barnes Foundation about the inclusion of Philadelphia in the Michelin Guide. Mayor Cherelle Parker and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro are expected to attend. 1st regional Michelin Guide for the American South launched to honor top southern cuisine
The first regional Michelin guide of top restaurants in North America is heading for the Southeast, and its anonymous inspectors are already in the field. This new Michelin Guide American South, announced Wednesday, will cover six states: Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. It will also encompass a pre-existing Atlanta, Georgia, Guide. The Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp is partnering with the state of Tennessee in support of the American South project, said Deana Ivey, NCVC's president and CEO. "We are thrilled that for the first time our Nashville restaurants have the opportunity to be considered by the prestigious Michelin Guide, which reflects the incredible talent and creativity found across our culinary scene,' Ivey said. 'While we're known globally for our music, our restaurants and chefs have earned national acclaim and are consistently honored among the best in the country. Recognition by the Michelin Guide would further cement our reputation as a must-visit destination for food lovers.' The full 2025 restaurant selection will be revealed later this year during the annual Michelin Guide ceremony for the American South. No further details have yet been released about the ceremony. The Michelin Guide was first published in France at the turn of the 20th century to encourage tire sales by giving practical advice to French motorists. It remains a stalwart source for identifying some of the best restaurants in the world. More: A Nashville Michelin Guide? Chefs say they'll be ready if expansion continues South Though the Michelin Guide covers restaurants from casual to fine dining in its search for broader excellence, its coveted Michelin Stars are reserved for the highest in culinary excellence. According to a media statement from Michelin North America, Inc., the new regional approach allows the guide to better uncover the authentic food culture of the American South, outside of its main urban centers. 'We are excited to embark on this new journey for the Michelin Guide as this will be the first time since the Guide's North American debut in 2005 that we are launching a regional selection,' International Director of the Michelin Guides Gwendal Poullennec said. 'The cuisine of the American South is a unique product of diverse influences creating an iconic array of specialties prepared by proud and impressive culinary talent.' The South is a treasure trove of unique culinary culture, from the food of the Gullah-Geechie in the Lowcountry to, yes, Nashville hot chicken. The move to focus on such vibrant regional food is long overdue. "Our region has long deserved global recognition for its extraordinary farm-to-table cuisine, world-class seafood, and rich food culture — crafted by some of the world's most creative and talented chefs,' Travel South USA President Liz Bittner said. 'We couldn't be prouder to be the first region in the country to showcase our culinary assets in big cities and small towns on a global stage." More: A guide to Nashville's James Beard-nominated chefs and restaurants The Michelin Guide is a selection of restaurants that display culinary excellence, based on Michelin's historical methodology. Restaurants must display quality products, harmony of flavors, mastery of cooking techniques, the voice and personality of the chef as reflected in the cuisine, and consistency between each visit and throughout the menu. Often, the Michelin Guide has relied on local tourism organizations to support the cost of creating and promoting the guides. Korea paid the company nearly $2 million to bring the guide to Seoul in 2016. A Michelin Star is awarded annually to restaurants deemed by the guide's anonymous judges as displaying mastery of the five criteria required to make it into the guide. Since the early 20th century, inspectors have crowned restaurants with one, two or three stars. A Michelin Star awards the food on the plate and does not take into account the restaurant's style or formality. The awards are handed out annually to the best restaurants around the world. A Michelin Star is one of the most coveted culinary achievements a chef can attain. According to the Michelin Guide, there is no secret mathematical formula; they're just looking for really great cooking. Some Michelin-starred restaurants are innovative, some traditional, some prix fixe and some a la carte. "All we are saying is 'these are the restaurants with the best food, where you will enjoy the most outstanding culinary experiences,'" the guide says. "It is then up to the reader to choose the one that best suits their needs/preferences." Mackensy Lunsford is the senior dining reporter for The Tennessean.
