Anurag Basu dismisses claims Aashiqui 3 starring Kartik Aaryan-Sreeleela being rescripted after Saiyaara's success: ‘The only similarity in our films is…'

Whenever a Bollywood movie becomes a success, it often instils a sense of dread among audiences, fearing it may trigger an unending trend of films that blindly replicate the original's story and style. This concern is not unsound, and the industry has witnessed it many times with filmmakers and production houses rushing to ride the gravy train by rehashing someone else's original work, thus reaping the rewards without sowing the seeds. With renowned director Mohit Suri's Saiyaara becoming a massive hit, all are now waiting to see how many 'new' musical romantic dramas will follow suit. Meanwhile, the project that has found itself in the spotlight is director Anurag Basu's Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela-starrer, which is already under production as the third instalment in the Aashiqui franchise. Much like Saiyaara and even Mohit's Aashiqui 2 (2013), the male lead in the Kartik Aaryan film is also a rockstar musician, inevitably inviting comparisons among all the projects. Ever since the Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda-starrer became a hit, speculations have been rife that Anurag and team were busy reworking their script to eliminate similarities. However, the Metro… In Dino director has categorically denied the rumours, maintaining that the resemblances between the two projects were minimal. 'Mohit and I are very close. I'm happy for his film's success. The only similarity in our films is that the male lead is a rockstar, and the story is about his journey,' he told Mid-day. Saiyaara revolves around a young couple whose lives take a turn when the woman is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Asserting that he knew the Mohit Suri film's storyline as the latter had narrated it to him, Anurag emphasised that they share a warm camaraderie. He added, 'In my film, the girl doesn't have dementia or any [other condition]. We are not rewriting or re-shooting. I knew beforehand that the girl had Alzheimer's disease in Saiyaara. So, why would I write the same [plot point] in mine?' Although Mohit originally pitched Saiyaara's story to be developed as Aashiqui 3, it eventually didn't go through. Thus, he went ahead and kickstarted it as a fresh project, while Aashiqui 2 producers Bhushan Kumar (T-Series) and Mukesh Bhatt (Vishesh Films) roped in Anurag Basu and Kartik Aaryan to float the third instalment in their musical romantic drama franchise. However, after the Bhushan-Mukesh split, a legal dispute arose over the use of Aashiqui in the film's title. After it took a legal route, the Delhi High Court ruled in Mukesh's favour, preventing the makers from naming the film Aashiqui 3.

‘System is so cruel': OMG 2 director disappointed after his Shahid Kapoor film on Shivaji gets shelved, wonders if his ‘Rs 180 cr film was not enough' proof

Vicky Kaushal-starrer Chhaava has been the biggest Hindi hit of the year so far and until Saiyaara came along, it seemed like Chhaava's throne might remain untouched. While that is yet to be determined, another film based on the life of another Maratha king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has been shelved. Amit Rai, of OMG 2 fame, was going to direct the film and Shahid Kapoor was attached to the project. Amit blamed the 'cruel system' for his film getting shelved and said that despite his last film doing really well, his hard work of five years has been destroyed. In a chat with Mid-day, Amit said, 'The system is so cruel. Even if you have proved your mettle with a R180 crore film [OMG 2], it's not enough.' Amit did not explain why his project was shelved but expressed his disappointment with the systemic problems of the film industry. 'How is a director supposed to work here, under these systems of casting, production, star, and management? You live with a story for five years, and within minutes, somebody writes a five-pager, pointing out what is wrong and what is right in the film,' he said. Exclusive | Salman Khan's Bigg Boss 19 fees revealed, actor to charge between Rs 120-150 crores for three months In 2024, it was reported that Amit's film would be produced by Telugu film producer Dil Raju, and Shahid was already attached to the project. At the time, he was also going to star in Ashwatthama, which was later put on hold due to budget constraints. A post shared by Riteish Deshmukh (@riteishd) Meanwhile, Riteish Deshmukh has already announced his film, Raja Shivaji, based on the life of Shivaji. Riteish is directing the film and will also play the lead role here. The film also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Amole Gupte, and Genelia Deshmukh.

Tusshar Kapoor on joining the cast of 'Masti 4': 'It feels like a reunion because...'

When asked about the on-set chemistry with the original trio, Tusshar reflects, 'I've worked with all the 3 actors separately before and with Riteish and Aftab in a similar zone for Kyaa Kool Hai Hum!' read more Tusshar Kapoor has officially joined the ensemble cast of Masti 4, and the actor has spoken about it as per a report by Mid-day. On stepping into this new role, Tusshar shares, 'Masti is a bonafide and successful brand in the comic genre, my role is an interesting new addition and I wanted to collaborate with Indra Kumar ji and Amar Jhunjhunwala for a long time for something worthwhile! Plus Milap Zaveri and I have worked earlier, but this time around it's much bigger and better, too!' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Adding further, he reveals, 'I readily accepted this film after hearing a brief narration of the story and my role in it! I can't reveal much about my character now but it's something you've never seen me do before! I had to watch a few regional as well as foreign language films to prepare for it!' When asked about the on-set chemistry with the original trio, Tusshar reflects, 'I've worked with all the 3 actors separately before and with Riteish and Aftab in a similar zone for Kyaa Kool Hai Hum! Therefore, there was no reason to be concerned about the chemistry between us and, most importantly, they welcomed me with open arms when I reached the outdoor venue where the film was being shot! We were all excited and in sync with each other from the very 1st day! I'm sure the camaraderie and fun off‑screen will reflect on‑screen, too!' Addressing the film's tone, which balances bold content with wider appeal, Tusshar says, 'Masti 4 is an adult but family comedy and has been written keeping the sensibilities of the wider audience in mind. My job as an actor is to do my job with sincerity and I've stuck to doing that with conviction! Regarding the boldness of it, my director is more concerned than me about the limits of the Masti universe and he'd be best able to explain further!'
