Andrew Garfield Says Spider-Man Return 'Would Have To Be Very Weird' & The 'Creative Freedom' Of Animated ‘Spider-Verse' Movies

Andrew Garfield has made it no secret that he is open to reprising his Spider-Man role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While making an appearance at the Middle East Film & Comic Con in Abu Dhabi, the actor explained the conditions under which his version of Peter Parker could coexist with Tom Holland's. More from Deadline 'Fantastic Four: First Steps': Pedro Pascal Reveals 'Biggest Character Secret' Playing Mister Fantastic Anthony Mackie Hopes For An X-Men & Captain America Team-Up In 'Avengers: Doomsday' Jon Bernthal Helped Tom Holland With Spider-Man Audition Tape: "Not That I Take Responsibility" 'I really love playing Spider-Man. I would love to play the character again in some capacity, but I think it would have to be very weird,' Garfield said during the panel, which ET bel Arabi shared on Instagram. 'I think I would want to do something very strange.' He continued, 'I would want to do something very unique, and offbeat, and surprising, kind of like the creative freedom that they have with the animated Spider-Verse movies. I think they're so great and you can honor the character in so many different ways through the multiverse.' The Oscar-nominated actor starred as Peter Parker in Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 and reprised the role in its 2014 sequel. Although a third movie never came to fruition, Garfield was able to don the Spidey costume again in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Holland and former Spider-Man Tobey Maguire. RELATED: ' In an interview with Esquire from October 2024, Garfield said he was 'left dangling' after Sony didn't proceed with a third installment of his iteration of Spider-Man. The actor described his return in No Way Home as 'healing' and noted that he would like to reprise the role again. 'I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it's additive to the culture, if there's a great concept or something that hasn't been done before that's unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into,' he told the publication. 'I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I'm joyful in return.'
