
Abu Dhabi to host Middle East Film & Comic Con till 2027
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Informa has announced a partnership extension that will see Middle East Film & Comic Con (MEFCC) held in Abu Dhabi through to 2027.
The agreement, which confirms the emirate as the event's home for a further two editions, was formalised during Arabian Travel Market 2025.
Since relocating to Abu Dhabi in 2022, MEFCC has established itself as the biggest pop culture event in the region, experiencing remarkable growth and attracting diverse celebrities, artists, and fans. Each edition has surpassed previous attendance records, solidifying its position as a leading event for pop culture enthusiasts.
The 2025 edition, which concluded in April, welcomed 38,000 visitors, attracting 400 international brands and celebrities such as Andrew Garfield from the Amazing Spider-Man franchise, Charlie Cox from Matt Murdock, Natalia Dyer from Stranger Things, Hideo Ishikawa from Naruto, and Emily Rudd from One Piece. The popular Gaming Arena, in partnership with Abu Dhabi Gaming, delivered a line-up of gaming tournaments and challenges across consoles, PC, and mobiles. Gaming enthusiasts also had the exclusive opportunity to demo new games before anyone else.

MEFCC offers an expansive range of activities and exhibitions that celebrate various facets of pop culture, including film, television, gaming, anime, and comics. Past editions have featured high-profile guests such as David Harbour from Stranger Things, Hayden Christensen from Star Wars, Matt Smith from House of the Dragon, and Iñaki Godoy of One Piece, alongside voice acting legends from Transformers, Dragon Ball Z, and The Last of Us. The event also boasts popular attractions like the dynamic Artist Alley and the thrilling Gaming Zone, which hosts tournaments for popular games such as NBA2K, FIFA 23, Fortnite, and Rocket League, as well as new additions like the Collectors Gallery and Japanese Village.

Abu Dhabi to host Games of the Future 2025 in December
Phygital International, the global governing body for the Games of the Future (GOTF), has announced Abu Dhabi as the Host City for the Games of the Future 2025, taking place from December 18 to 23. Bringing together cutting-edge innovation and elite competition, the Games of the Future will transform Abu Dhabi into the epicenter of phygital sport and feature a dynamic fusion of physical athleticism and immersive digital gaming. The multi-sport event includes a variety of ground-breaking phygital disciplines, including Phygital Football and Phygital Shooter, as well as tech sports and esports. Each phygital discipline sees athletes first compete in a digital version of their sport, followed by competing in the same sport in real-life. Final results are determined by combining performance across both stages - blending the physical and virtual into one seamless competitive experience. Aspire, the driving force behind grand challenges and global competitions for Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), is appointed as the UAE Delivery Authority. In this role, Aspire will lead the delivery of the event's innovation agenda, ensure alignment across multiple stakeholders, and coordinate funding frameworks with government partners and sponsors. Ethara, the region's leading live event management organisation, will serve as the Event Delivery Partner, leading end-to-end execution including venue operations, logistics, and fan experience. In addition, Ethara will drive event promotion and play a key commercial role by securing sponsorships and partnerships to support the event's success. From Console To Classroom: Abu Dhabi Unveils Region's First Dual-Certified Video Game Design Degree
In a major move to boost Abu Dhabi's rising stature in the global gaming industry, the region's first dual-certified bachelor of arts degree programme in video game design will be introduced in the upcoming academic year at Abu Dhabi University (ADU). The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT – Abu Dhabi), ADU, and Rubika signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the programme. Saeed Ali Al Fazari, Director of Strategic Affairs at DCT Abu Dhabi; Prof Ghassan Aouad, Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University; and Dr Stephane Andre, CEO of Rubika, were the signatories. 'This agreement to launch the region's first bachelor of arts degree in game design aligns with DCT – Abu Dhabi's strategic priorities to elevate culture and creative industries in the emirate, as well as to inspire and empower youth,' Al Fazari said. 'By ensuring that aspiring game designers have access to world-class education and practical experience, we are enabling the growth of the gaming sector, regionally and globally, developing a highly qualified talent pool and positioning them to excel in this dynamic industry, right here in Abu Dhabi.' Internships, scholarships Through Abu Dhabi Gaming, DCT – Abu Dhabi will facilitate deep industry integration by offering structured internships, mentorship programmes, and connections with local game studios. The department will fund up to 140 scholarships over a six-year period to support access and participation in the programme. Rubika, a globally recognised French institution specialising in video game design, animation, and digital arts, will provide academic leadership, curriculum oversight, and faculty training. The school will also enable international exchange opportunities with its global campuses, bringing international best practices to Abu Dhabi. 'Our strategy is to establish ourselves in regions with a strong cultural heritage. By leveraging their creativity, the students in our programmes are encouraged to draw from their own cultural roots to contribute to the enrichment of global culture through video games and animated films,' Dr Andre noted. From August ADU will host the programme on campus and enrolment is set to begin in August. 'This partnership reflects our commitment to aligning education with emerging industry needs. By launching the region's first dual-certified game design degree, we're giving students access to specialised training that opens up career opportunities, both in the UAE and internationally,' Prof Aouad underlined.
