The secret button on your washing machine that can slash your energy bills by £72
WASHING machines are a busy household's best friend, but they can be a drain on your wallet. Luckily, experts have revealed a handy little tip to help make your laundry cheaper. 1 You can save around £72 a year on your energy bills by flicking the spin button before popping wet clothes in the tumble dryer. Miele kitchen appliance expert Ryan Adams, director of Ati Harrogate has revealed why this handy tip can save big money. 'Placing wet clothes directly into a tumble dryer forces the appliance to work much harder. "Running a second spin cycle in the washing machine to remove excess water and untangling items before drying helps the clothes move freely in the drum, reducing strain on the dryer. 'Including a thorough spin cycle before tumble drying can help households potentially save between £29 to £72 annually.' And that's not the only tip guaranteed to save you some cash - Ryan also has strong views when it comes to mixed washing. We often chuck all sorts of clothing and bedding together, but one mixture to avoid is washing towels and bed linen. This combination can also cause damage to your washing machine drum too. Ryan said: 'Washing towels and bed linen in the same load can cause excessive strain on a washing machine. "The added water weight often exceeds the recommended load capacity, potentially damaging the drum shaft and bearings. "Additionally, these items tend to form a single heavy ball during the cycle, which can bounce around and harm the machine's internal parts.' Another tip is to always check pockets, as coins can wreak havoc on washing machines and driers. "These items can bang around inside the drum, leading to expensive repairs. A quick check of pockets before starting a load can save your machines and prevent unnecessary costs.' Finally, another thing to keep in mind when you're next working through a pile of dirty washing is to remember to empty the lint trap. Ryan said: 'Neglecting the lint trap can have serious consequences. "A clogged trap reduces airflow, forcing the dryer to work harder, which not only wastes energy but also risks overheating the appliance. 'Regularly cleaning the lint trap before each drying cycle makes it more efficient and safer, preventing fire hazards.' More ways to save on laundry bills It's not just eco settings that can slash your energy bills when doing the laundry. Make sure you only run the machine when it's fully loaded. Cutting down on a half full cycle each week adds up to significant savings over a year. Consider using colder washes more frequently. A large part of the energy consumer by a machine is to simply heat the water. When drying clothes, try to ditch the tumble drier where possible. Drying clothes outside is easy and quick in the summer. When temperatures are cooler, consider investing in a heated clothes airer which use far less energy than a drier. And put your clothes on an extra spin cycle first to wring out as much water as possible. If you do use a tumbler drier make sure all lint is removed from the filters, which can impact the efficiency of the machine and means it has to work harder and use more energy. Popping an old tennis ball in a tumble drier with your laundry can help clothes to separate out and dry faster to help you use less energy. 4 ways to keep your energy bills low Laura Court-Jones, Small Business Editor at Bionic shared her tips. 1. Turn your heating down by one degree You probably won't even notice this tiny temperature difference, but what you will notice is a saving on your energy bills as a result. Just taking your thermostat down a notch is a quick way to start saving fast. This one small action only takes seconds to carry out and could potentially slash your heating bills by £171.70. 2. Switch appliances and lights off It sounds simple, but fully turning off appliances and lights that are not in use can reduce your energy bills, especially in winter. Turning off lights and appliances when they are not in use, can save you up to £20 a year on your energy bills 3. Install a smart meter Smart meters are a great way to keep control over your energy use, largely because they allow you to see where and when your gas and electricity is being used. 4. Consider switching energy supplier No matter how happy you are with your current energy supplier, they may not be providing you with the best deals, especially if you've let a fixed-rate contract expire without arranging a new one. If you haven't browsed any alternative tariffs lately, then you may not be aware that there are better options out there.

EA Looking to Shut Down Long-Running Studio
It seems isn't done closing down some of its studios. A new report suggests the long-running racing developer may be next on the chopping block. Video game insider eXtas1s recently claimed the developer of games like Grid, Colin McRae Rally, Dirt, and most recently F1 25, will shut its doors. Those impacted will be put on the next F1 game or a new Need for Speed game currently in development. Additionally, the insider learned that there are about 400 'more' layoffs at EA. 'The cancellation of Black Panther will NOT be the only thing,' said eXtas1s. 'I have been able to learn that there are about 400 more layoffs coming up at EA, a total CLOSURE of the main headquarters of Codemasters and that these developers will be integrated into EA Sp (F1) and a new Need For Speed that is already in development.' EA recently closed Cliffhanger Games and cancelled its Black Panther game. According to an email from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele, this decision was to 'sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.' 'These decisions are hard,' Miele wrote. 'They affect people we've worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We're doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we've had success helping people land in new roles.' The status of Codemasters has been up in the air since EA paused development on future World Rally Championship titles. Around that announcement, the official Codemasters X account was pulled. While all signs are pointing to Codemasters getting shut down, EA has yet to officially confirm the closure. EA Cancels ‘Black Panther' Game, Shutters Cliffhanger Games Studio, Gamers React
Source: EA/ Cliffhanger Games / Black Panther That Black Panther standalone we were all excited for is no longer happening. IGN broke the news that EA has taken away Cliffhanger Games' heart-shaped herb and has cancelled one of the games Marvel fans have been eagerly anticipating since it was first announced back in July 2023. According to the website, EA Entertainment President Laura Miele stated in an email that the recent changes, cancellations, and other moves were aimed at 'sharpening our focus and putting our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.' The bad news for the gaming industry doesn't stop there, EA is also laying off an unspecified number of workers on both mobile and central teams. IGN reports that EA declined to comment on the specific number but believes, while not confirming that the number is less than the roughly 300 employees let go last month across Respawn and EA's Fan Care teams. 'These decisions are hard,' said Miele. 'They affect people we've worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We're doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we've had success helping people land in new roles.' Gamers Are Sad About Black Panther's Cancellation & Layoffs At EA As you can imagine, the gaming community isn't taking this news very well. 'You've got to be fucking kidding me. First Wonder Woman (a female led game) gets cancelled and now Black Panther (a poc led game) gets cancelled, and neither of them ever had a video game before. This really is Trvmp's America…' one post on X, formerly Twitter, read. ' more layoffs as the Black Panther game cancelled and the studio closed it keeps getting worse :(,' Kinda Funny and GamerTag Radio's Parris Lilly said. While we are not getting the Black Panther game, EA says it is still committed to bringing us that Iron Man game currently being developed by Motive, and will focus on Battlefield , The Sims , Skate , and Apex Legends . What a sad time to be a gamer and Marvel fan, just saying. The video game streets are still talking; you can see those reactions below. EA Reportedly Cancels Black Panther Game, Shutters Cliffhanger Studio
Almost two years after it was initially announced, EA has reportedly canceled a Black Panther game that was in the works, and the publisher closed the studio that was developing the game. According to a report from IGN, news of the Black Panther game's cancellation came on Wednesday. Along with canceling the game and closing the studio, EA laid off additional workers from various teams, but there were no specifics on the number of people affected. An email from EA Entertainment President Laura Miele laid out these changes along with details about layoffs, saying they were to "sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities," according to IGN. "These decisions are hard," Miele wrote in an email, according to IGN. "They affect people we've worked with, learned from and shared real moments with. We're doing everything we can to support them, including finding opportunities within EA, where we've had success helping people land in new roles." EA didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the game's cancellation. EA formed Cliffhanger Games to develop the open-world single-player Black Panther game. Heading the studio was Kevin Stephens, a former VP of Monolith Productions, which made the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War games. Few other details about the game were known other than that it was supposed to take place in Wakanda, the fictional home of Black Panther. This Black Panther game is different than the Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra game that was announced back in 2022. That game was expected to feature Captain America and Azzuri, T'Challa's grandfather, who was the Black Panther during World War II. Marvel 1943 is being published by Skydance New Media, partnered and Plaion, and was initially planned to come out this year, but Skydance announced earlier in the month that the game is being pushed back to early 2026.

EA will no longer make the Black Panther game, game studio shut: Report
Electronic Arts has reportedly cancelled Black Panther game, which it has been working on in collaboration with Marvel. Moreover, the American video game publisher has reportedly shut down the game studio Cliffhanger Games, which it had created to develop the game – reported gaming-focused news organisation IGN. Since its initial reveal in 2023, limited details have emerged about Black Panther game, other than it being a single-player title featuring an original story created in partnership with Marvel Games. As per the report, in an email sent to staff from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele, she said that these changes, alongside other recent cancellations and layoffs, are being done to "sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities." She added: 'These decisions are hard. They affect people we've worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We're doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we've had success helping people land in new roles." EA's partnership with Marvel affected According to IGN, Marvel and EA's collaboration on Black Panther is part of a broader three-game agreement that also includes Iron Man and an as-yet unannounced title. The partnership is expected to move forward, with Motive Studios taking the lead on upcoming Marvel projects. In a statement shared with IGN, Miele confirmed: 'Our partnership with Marvel remains strong and our multi-title, long-term collaboration continues.' Layoffs at EA The layoffs at EA follow several waves of job cuts and project cancellations in recent years, particularly throughout 2025. Just last month, the company reportedly let go of around 300 employees, including nearly 100 at Respawn, while also scrapping a Titanfall title in development and another incubation project, as reported by IGN. According to the report, earlier in 2025, EA restructured BioWare, redeploying some staff and laying off others. In 2024, a major company-wide restructuring led to 670 layoffs, including approximately two dozen at Respawn. The previous year, BioWare saw 50 roles eliminated, with additional undisclosed cuts reportedly taking place at Codemasters.
