Vietnam needs to fix a massive skill gap— it's betting big on reverse brain drain
The government has not set a formal target for returnees, but analysts say Vietnam needs highly qualified professionals with global experience to achieve its growth ambitions read more Vietnam is looking to woo overseas citizens to come back and fill the talent gap in the country. Reuters Vietnam is stepping up efforts to attract skilled overseas professionals as part of sweeping economic reforms aimed at propelling the country into higher-value industries. Recent policy changes include relaxed immigration rules and the introduction of dual nationality to entice members of the Vietnamese diaspora to return. Officials say the country, with a population of 100 million, is seeking to bolster its talent pool in sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence and finance. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The government has not set a formal target for returnees, but analysts say Vietnam needs highly qualified professionals with global experience to achieve its growth ambitions. The story of Minh Hoang illustrates both the opportunities and challenges of this drive. 'I had everything in the US, a good job, a nice house, a nice life. But working here means I can contribute to the country where I was born,' Nikkei Asia quoted Minh, who recently returned to Hanoi after two decades abroad, as saying. His decision came after Vietnam introduced policies making it easier for overseas Vietnamese to live and work in the country without giving up their foreign citizenship. Minh, now chief data officer at Techcombank Securities, typifies the professionals Vietnam is courting: experienced, globally trained and eager to contribute to the country's economic transformation. Yet, even for those willing to return, integration into Vietnam's corporate culture can be challenging, with hierarchical structures and opaque processes contrasting sharply with workplaces in developed economies. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Vietnam is betting that policy shifts under Communist Party leader To Lam will make the country more attractive to such professionals. The government has pledged further incentives on salary, accommodation and job opportunities, alongside procedural reforms to cut red tape. These measures are crucial as Vietnam navigates a transition from a low-cost manufacturing economy to one anchored in technology and high-value services. 'There are many young and smart people on my team,' Minh said. 'Some are especially good at math, an essential skill for AI.' His experience shows that while Vietnam is teeming with raw talent, expertise in advanced technologies is still limited, leaving returning professionals to play key roles in upskilling local teams. Private companies have been instrumental in driving the trend. Techcombank, for instance, launched an 'Overseas Talent Roadshow' to connect with Vietnamese professionals working in finance, data and technology sectors abroad. Chief Executive Officer Jens Lottner said the bank initially targeted Singapore and Europe, drawing hundreds of potential candidates. 'Vietnam is more exciting now,' Lottner said. 'The political leadership and the aspiration the government has articulated are very encouraging. So, people are saying: 'Maybe now is the time to come back.'' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, persistent obstacles remain. Administrative enforcement is inconsistent, with different provinces applying national regulations unevenly, according to consultancy InCorp Vietnam. The lack of a comprehensive framework for dependent visas and spousal employment rights further limits the appeal of long-term relocation. Despite these challenges, momentum is building. The State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese estimates that around 6 million people of Vietnamese origin live abroad, with 10 per cent considered highly qualified professionals. As the country pushes forward with infrastructure and technology projects, policymakers and companies alike are betting that many will view Vietnam's changing economic landscape as an opportunity worth seizing.

Augusta's Hamilton Coleman holds off Minh Nguyen for U.S. Junior title
Hamilton Coleman was up big, and then he wasn't. But Coleman never lost hope, or his lead, before birdieing the 35th hole to secure a 2-and-1 victory over Minh Nguyen in Saturday's final of the 77th U.S. Junior Amateur. Coleman, a 17-year-old from Augusta, Georgia, converted a birdie from 18 feet and led 5 up after 12 holes of the scheduled 36-hole championship match at Trinity Forest in Dallas. He went into the lunch break 3 up, too, before the 18-year-old Minh, of Vietnam, clawed back to just 1 down with six holes to play. 'Getting off to that hot start, I knew that I couldn't just ease my way into winning, and I knew I had to keep hitting quality shots,' Coleman said. 'I was playing well, and he just kept making putts and hitting shots close. It got a little tight there, but I never lost faith. And I told my caddie, I was nervous, but I was never scared. I'm proud of the way I handled that.' Minh, who will attend Oregon State starting this fall, began his afternoon comeback at the par-4 first, where he curled in a 5-footer for birdie to move to 2 down. Coleman then won Nos. 22 and 23, the latter after nearly holing out his third shot on the par-5 fifth, to stretch his advantage back to 4 up. But Minh birdied four of the next seven holes, including the lengthy par-3 11th where he landed his tee ball on the front of the green and watched it roll some 50 feet to close range, to get it to 1 down. Minh nearly tied the match on the 34th hole, the par-5 16th, but his 12-footer for birdie missed. He couldn't get a similarly distanced putt to drop at the par-3 17th, which set the table for Coleman to hole his match-winner from 10 feet. 'You try not to tell yourself what it's for, to qualify for the U.S. Open and be the U.S. Junior champion,' Coleman said. 'Just stuck to my line and made a free, aggressive stroke at it, and it happened to go in.' Like Coleman said, he's into the field for next summer's U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. He's also the first U.S. Junior champion from Georgia since Andy Shim in 2012. A Georgia commit for 2026, Coleman is the first future Bulldog to win this championship since Brian Harman in 2003.

Lam trial hears "abusive" mother spent three days in nursing home
Worried about their mother's increasingly abusive behaviour, the Lam family moved her out of the Bowmount Street townhouse she shared with her two adult daughters and into a nursing home. Second National Press Forum in Vietnam elevates strategic vision for revolutionary press
HANOI: The second National Press Forum, which wrapped up in Hanoi on Friday (June 20), was a great success, opening up a creative space and elevating the strategic vision for Vietnam's revolutionary press as it advances alongside the nation, chairman of the Vietnam Journalists' Association Le Quoc Minh (pic) affirmed. Minh, who is also Head of the Steering Committee for the National Press Festival 2025, said that the forum has become a remarkable highlight in the series of events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, drawing special attention from the press community and the public over the past two days. He appreciated the dedication, enthusiasm, and strong commitment of nearly 70 speakers who contributed to the forum, affirming that the active participation of hundreds of delegates, including journalists, media agency leaders, press managers, journalism students, and media enthusiasts, resulted in 12 high-quality sessions. Notably, the 10 thematic panel discussions were well-organised and methodically conducted, featuring highly topical themes and rich content that captured strong interest from both the press circle and the wider public. Amidst a rapidly transforming world driven by digital technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and globalisation, Vietnamese journalism is facing unprecedented challenges, yet also tremendous opportunities, provided it can proactively adapt and innovate. One of the most pressing challenges is the rise of social media video content and individually generated news, which poses a direct threat to mainstream media outlets. This new era presents journalism with chances to reaffirm its leadership role. In the context where AI dominates and produces vast volumes of content, the only sustainable path forward for journalism is to focus on high-quality content and core values. Journalism must redefine its mission - not to report the fastest, but to provide the most profound and trustworthy value. These pressing concerns were at the heart of discussions at this year's National Press Forum. The forum served not only as a space for intellectual exchange and dialogue among journalists nationwide but also as a platform for exploring innovative approaches to transform Vietnamese journalism, aiming toward a truly professional, modern, and human-centered journalism in this era of the nation's rise, Minh added. At the first session 'Vietnamese journalism in the new era: Vision for creating development space,' delegates and experts discussed challenges, opportunities as well as key solutions for the sustainable development of Vietnamese journalism. Meanwhile, the session on AI and digital transformation strategy of Vietnamese newsrooms attracted many managers, experts, and journalists. They shared the view that AI opens up unprecedented opportunities for the Vietnamese press and media industry from improving the content quality to increasing social impacts, helping newsrooms adapt to the digital era and meet the increasing information needs of the public. At the fifth session on revenue in the digital age, speakers stressed that newsrooms must focus not only on producing quality content but also on securing sufficient funding to sustain operations. Other sessions covered topics such as female leadership in journalism, strategies to engage Gen Z, how television is adapting to the new media landscape, and mechanisms to develop radio in the current context. Notably, the 10th session on Resolution 18 and the requirement for innovation in press personnel attracted the public and journalists. The resolution, aimed at streamlining the political system, called for a leaner press sector to enhance its effectiveness. However, streamlining is not just about mergers, downsizing, or staff cuts. It's also about optimising resources, minimising waste, and improving operational efficiency. The process presents an opportunity for press agencies to innovate their organisational models, build convergent newsrooms, and modernise workflows. - Vietnam News/ANN
