Dear Hongrang – K-drama Episode 8 Recap & Review

Episode 8 Episode 8 of Dear Hongrang begins with Jae-yi heading to confront Hong-rang. But she recalls their conversation on his birthday. He had been quite sad that he never had anyone. She wonders who he is. Instead, she pleads with Yeol-guk to let her go with Mu-jin and live a normal life. She gets his approval and an angry Hong-rang confronts Mu-jin for taking her away. Mu-jin threatens him by mentioning his slave name, Rodent Scrap. However, Mu-jin promises to keep it a secret as long as Jae-yi leaves with him. His aide still doesn't understand why he doesn't expose Hong-rang and take back the guild. Mu-jin explains that Jae-yi kept him going when life got hard. He cannot lose her. He also owes Hong-rang for saving his life. As for Jae-yi, she confides in one of the sleuths about Hong-rang. She also reveals that she was relieved to learn they are not related, even though it means the real Hong-rang is still lost. She cannot forgive herself and that is why she needs to leave. Onto the guild politics, the merchants gossip that Yeol-guk has lost all power as Yeon-ui elects Hong-rang as guildmaster. The Grand Prince suddenly shows up and marvels at how perfect Hong-rang looks. It seems that he wants Hong-rang but Yeol-guk warns him. Yeol-guk also warns him of a royal investigation into the missing kids and the Snow Man, courtesy of the Songs. The Grand Prince decides to paint to restore the yin and yang balance and enlists Yeol-guk's help. The prince also recalls how he had created a yin-yang masterpiece long ago which was lost. It cuts to Hong-rang getting a copy of the test results on Song Su-nam. His skin is burnt and has traces of limestone, alum and arsenic. The assassins search for the source of the toxic powders and it leads them to the caves where the Painter's kids were kept. Flashbacks show a young In-hoe and Hong-rang being bathed in toxic substances to turn their skin pale. The Painter then tattoos their bodies in the cave. Meanwhile, Mu-jin gifts Jae-yi two Java sparrows. The birds mate for life and he hopes they can similarly be each other's lifelines. She agrees and Hong-rang sadly watches them. Surprisingly, Bang-suk spins a tale to Yeol-guk that Hong-rang is fake. Some of his lies are unwittingly true, such as Hong-rang working with assassins to take over the guild. Bang-suk adds that Hong-rang plans to pin the Snow Man and Su-nam's kidnapping on Yeol-guk. As proof, Bang-suk takes him to an abandoned Min kiln where the kid was burned. Bang-suk found it from the traces on Su-man's clothes. Seeing how close he is to the truth, Yeol-guk has the Snow Man kill Bang-suk. Turns out, Yeol-guk is in cahoots with the Evil Painter and the Snow Man. He rushes to their hideout, where Du-ryeong is painting with his left hand. Yeol-guk rebukes him for being careless with the kiln. However, Du-ryeong scoffs and claims to be invaluable. Meanwhile, Hong-rang tracks one of the Painter's men and tortures him. The man takes him to the hideout and Hong-rang kills him. A fight ensues between Hong-rang's assassins and the Painter's men. Yeol-guk is gone by the time Hong-rang fights the Snow Man. The Snow Man is not a ghost but a really tall and pale man. His body is full of tattoos and he is one of the Painter's human canvases. Hong-rang's clothes are torn and Yeol-guk's aide spots tattoos on his back. As more assassins arrive, the Snow Man runs off. Hong-rang finds Du-ryeong (killed by Yeol-guk). A flashback shows Hong-rang stabbing the Evil Painter on the left side of his chest. But Du-ryeong has no scar. He is not the Evil Painter but a minion who handles the kids. A disappointed Hong-rang heads home and the cook pleads with him to patch up with Jae-yi before she departs. The next morning, he confesses everything to Jae-yi, about his enslaved past and torture. In return, she confesses that she is in love with him. He begs her not to go with Mu-jin. Meanwhile, the aide tells Yeol-guk that Hong-rang is an impostor. Yeol-guk would have never allowed the real Hong-rang to be tattooed by the Painter. But both Hong-rang and Jae-yi are missing. Mu-jin sees that the birds are set free. There is a note and he looks angry. At the end of Dear Hongrang Episode 8, Jae-yi and Hong-rang run off on horseback. The Episode Review Dear Hongrang Episode 8 answers most of our burning questions, resolves the big Painter mystery and gets ready for the showdown between Hong-rang and the bad guys. Now that the K-drama is in the final stretch, there is no time left to waste, forcing all the characters to reveal their cards. Hong-rang's identity is out in the open, Mu-jin is very likely going to turn to the dark side and Yeol-guk's evil connection is revealed. Bang-suk spinning his tale, unknowingly guessing the truth was pretty hilarious. But it is strange that all these characters just happen upon the truth at the right time. How is it that Hong-rang suddenly finds the cave and one of the henchmen? How is Bang-suk the only one to find the kiln? Why does Jae-yi take 12 years to find the real Hong-rang's satchel when it was hidden in plain sight? It all is a bit too convenient and has been happening way too frequently for viewers to constantly suspend belief. By the way, Yeon-ui seems to have taken a backseat which is quite a shame as she has the potential to wreak even more havoc. Unfortunately, it looks like she is going to have to relinquish her spotlight to Yeol-guk and the Evil Painter. Who, by the way, is very likely the Grand Prince. It did seem odd that his demand in the previous episode went unanswered. Seeing the way he fawns over Hong-rang, he most likely wanted him as a canvas in exchange for saving Mu-jin. And like the toxic dad he is, Yeol-guk chose his 'biological' son over his adopted one. Previous Episode Next Episode Expect A Full Season Write-Up When This Season Concludes!

Dear Hongrang – K-drama Episode 6 Recap & Review

Episode 6 Episode 6 of Dear Hongrang begins with Gyu-ha warning Hong-rang about Kkot-nim's kill order. He rationalises that the marriage will keep Jae-yi safe and Hong-rang should leave her be. However, Jae-yi tries to make a run for it. She is brought back by Yeon-ui's man, Yuk-son who threatens the sleuths. 5 days are left for the marriage when Mu-jin gets a note from Lady Ko. They can annul the marriage on the grounds that Choi Ju-yeol is still married to her. Ko plans to show up in the middle of the ceremony. It is D-Day and the ceremony begins. Mu-jin's men cannot find Lady Ko and Jae-yi looks scared as the ceremony ends. Seeing her fear, Hong-rang feels guilty. He is the one who sent Mu-jin the note and helped Lady Ko run away. On top of that, Hong-rang learns that Yeon-ui plans to kill Jae-yi, blame it on Ju-yeol and take his land as a prenup violation. While Mu-jin and his men frantically try to stop the consummation, Yeon-ui's assassin drugs Jae-yi and attacks her. Hong-rang kills the assassin and hides her. She comes around but her vision is hazy. She holds his hand and he kisses her. Outside, Mu-jin confronts Ju-yeol when he finds Jae-yi missing. Before it can get worse, Yeol-guk reveals his hand. He brings in Lady Ko who exposes the Chois. The marriage is annulled as Ju-yeol has a living wife. Jae-yi is still missing and Mu-jin suspects Hong-rang. However, Hong-rang pretends to be drunk in his room. Alone, In-hoe confronts him. He looks sad when Hong-rang confesses that he has fallen for Jae-yi. The next morning Mu-jin finds a confused Jae-yi in her room and recounts last night's events. She looks troubled as the drunk Hong-rang story doesn't match her hazy memory of kissing him. Meanwhile, Hong-rang begs Kkot-nim to leave Jae-yi alone. He will do his part and get her the Min Guild's partition deed. But she believes Jae-yi will betray him like Yeol-guk betrayed her. As for Yeol-guk, he is surprised when Mun Gyu-ha proposes an alliance. It is revealed that the Sims were a poor family and Yeol-guk meant to use the Min wealth to run away with Kkot-nim. Gyu-ha pretends to sympathise and claims they have to take down the real enemy – Yeon-ui. Back home, Jae-yi confronts Hong-rang about the kiss. She hopes it is a dream, as she will be in pain if it turns out to be real. He assures her that it was a dream but he looks sad. Feeling bitter, he focuses on Kkot-nim's plan. He hints to Yeon-ui that Yeol-guk is having an affair and she has Yuk-son follow him. It is bad timing for the Sims as Yeol-guk creates a secret guild under his name. He signs Mu-jin on as the guildmaster and shares his plan to transfer their assets to the new guild. As part of the plan, the royal registry gives the Min Guild's position to the Muns. Yeon-ui is upset and Yeol-guk swoops in with a solution to partner with the Muns. But once he leaves, Yuk-son updates her that Yeol-guk is secretly meeting with Mun Gyu-ha, Kkot-nim's brother. She puts two and two together and is furious. Meanwhile, Mu-jin is pleasantly surprised as Jae-yi starts avoiding Hong-rang. But he happens upon her sketchbook which is filled with sketches of (fake) Hong-rang. Looks like he just cannot catch a break as Yuk-son follows Mu-jin's men while they hide guild assets at the Min silver mine. Yuk-son sets off a bomb which kills most of the men. At the end of Dear Hongrang Episode 6, Yeon-ui accuses Mu-jin of illegal sulfur trade, the miners' casualties and embezzling from the Min Guild to his own Sim Guild. Yeol-guk tries to stop her but she gives him a choice – to send Mu-jin to the magistrate or to quietly deal with it. He lets Yeon-ui hold Mu-jin captive. The Episode Review Dear Hongrang Episode 6 is a busy chapter as it deals with the Ju-yeol marriage, causes a rift between Hong-rang and Jae-yi, has Gyu-ha entrapping Yeol-guk and Yeon-ui taking out her anger on Mu-jin. It feels like a movie with constant action and plot progression. Even the filler scenes add to the story or aid in character development, such as Mu-jin being pushed to the dark side as his father abandons him and Jae-yi falls for Hong-rang. Then there is Jae-yi who is conflicted by the kiss as she now believes that Hong-rang is her brother. It may feel icky to viewers as Jae-yi believes she is living in Game of Thrones, attracted to her brother. Honestly, the K-drama could have easily kept the same story, stakes and suspense while getting rid of the sibling factor. Additionally, the narrative in this chapter is a little too convoluted in trying to weave an ambitious thriller involving several subconflicts and way too many characters. It feels disjointed and viewers are bound to get confused unless they rewatch the episode with a keen eye for every clue and misdirect. The Evil Painter and Snow Man drama also seems to be sidelined for a majority of the episodes so far. Which is quite strange since it is supposed to be the main crux of the conflict that affects the two Hong-rangs. Dear Hongrang – K-drama Episode 5 Recap & Review

Episode 5 Episode 5 of Dear Hongrang begins with Yeon-ui's assistant, Yuk-son, stabbing a pregnant Kkot-nim in the stomach. He claims that it is Yeol-guk's order. She survives but loses her child. She adopts Fake Hong-rang who is an orphan and has just escaped his captors. At present, she warns him not to be distracted by Jae-yi. Her plan is to kill the Sim kids and have Hong-rang take over the Min Guild. Hong-rang insists that they can use Jae-yi. Kkot-nim indulges him but orders her assassins to kill Jae-yi should she step out of line. Meanwhile, Mu-jin is upset with his aide for the kill order. He hates that he accidentally put Jae-yi's life in jeopardy. Coincidentally, she is thinking about Hong-rang's Soulless Reaper rumour and asks Mu-jin about it. He tells her how Hong-rang is an assassin but this just causes her to worry for him. She confesses that while she doesn't recognise Hong-rang as her brother, her heart seems to know him. This saddens Mu-jin as he vies for her heart. As for Hong-rang, he snoops around Jae-yi's secret cave and finds paintings of Little Hong-rang. The kid has a sachet and he recognises it. Jae-yi spots him and he tries to gaslight her into thinking his memories are returning. She wants to know of his assassin past to accept the new image of her brother but he deflects. But he has a plan as he asks the cook about the sachet. It is a protection amulet given by the family. Little Hong-rang lost his and he always wore Jae-yi's. A flashback shows Kkot-nim and Fake Hong-rang burying the sachet Yeol-guk had made for Kkot-nim's child. The Min Guild is in trouble as the patrons have lost their trust. Yeon-ui kills the Jin verifier and fakes a suicide note stating that the Sims did not know about the forgeries. The patrons feel guilty for doubting them and go back to the guild. In exchange for saving Yeol-guk's reputation, Yeon-ui wants Jae-yi to be wed. He is furious as he doesn't want Jae-yi to be used as a pawn. However, he knows not to rile Yeon-ui up. Instead, he focuses on Gyu-ha as he thinks he is up to no good. Meanwhile, Hong-rang finds the buried sachet. Since Jae-yi believes that only one sachet exists, she will believe that he is the real Hong-rang. He is about to give it to her when he sees her and Mu-jin act like lovers. He is jealous and confesses to Goldie, the pet dog, that he doesn't want to give the sachet yet. If he does, Jae-yi will see him as her brother. One night, Jae-yi asks about the Soulless Reaper at a gambling den. Everyone is too afraid to answer. Right then, she is kidnapped by Bang-suk who claims to have found the real Hong-rang. He wants revenge on Fake Hong-rang in exchange for the evidence. However, Jae-yi ends up tricking him as she confesses to Hong-rang that she doesn't want him hurt, even if he is an impostor. She has grown to care for him. The gamble pays off as Bang-suk had lied about the real Hong-rang. Soon, a fight ensues between Hong-rang and Bang-suk's thugs. Kkot-nim's assassins help take them down and then try to kill Jae-yi. Hong-rangs begs her to accept him and knows she will die if she doesn't. To seal the deal, he gives the Sim sachet and tells her about the Soulless Reaper. It is enough and she accepts that he is her brother. Relieved, In-hoe orders the assassins to back off. It cuts to a montage of Jae-yi doting on Hong-rang. Mu-jin is still suspicious but agrees to give the guild to him. Jae-yi takes Hong-rang to her secret picnic spot. Having realised his attraction to her, he keeps crossing the line by wiping her lips and licking sugar off her fingers. She is flustered and confused by his actions. Kkot-nim is furious; her vengeance against the Sims includes killing Jae-yi. She orders In-hoe to kill her regardless. He is troubled but Gyu-ha comes to his rescue. Jae-yi is being married into an unsavoury family. The man is Choi Ju-yeol. He does his best to impress Jae-yi, talking about art and Du-ryeong. He finally confesses that he knows what it is to lose someone, and she is more agreeable. Mu-jin wants to stop it but Yeol-guk claims it is a good marriage. Should the Chois violate the prenup, they lose their land to the Sims. But both Mu-jin and Hong-rang conduct separate investigations. Turns out, Ju-yeol is a cruel man. All 3 of his wives have mysteriously died or disappeared. Hong-rang finds the third wife, Lady Ko, whose face has been torn off. Right before the ceremony, Ju-yeol beats a servant and smiles. At the end of Dear Hongrang Episode 5, the wedding begins. The Episode Review Dear Hongrang Episode 5 introduces a third antagonist but Kkot-nim is even more complex than Yeon-ui and the Grand Prince, given that she is a victim. The emotional rollercoaster she sends Hong-rang and In-hoe on is exciting while also frustrating. A pretty cool observation is that while Yeon-ui is responsible for killing her unborn child, her revenge against Yeol-guk is still valid. This episode shows that in his passivity, Yeol-guk does more harm than good to those he cares about. Having been caught by his wife, he decides to stay with her rather than live a life of poverty with Kkot-nim. He cares for Jae-yi but not enough to stop Yeon-ui from hurting her or marrying her off without looking into Ju-yeol. And this is why Kkot-nim becomes the antagonist since her vengeance includes our heroine, poor Jae-yi, who already has it tough. Especially in this episode, with that whiplash she gets from Hong-rang flirting with her. To top it off, she is being married off to a monster. By the way, is Ju-yeol the same creepy painter, Du-ryeong? We are never clearly shown Du-ryeong's face, are we? The chapter also works as a great mid-season finale, as most of the initial mystery is resolved. Fake Hong-rang's identity is confirmed, Kkot-nim's revenge is explained, and so is Yeon-ui's master plan now that her 'son' is back. The second half of the K-drama is now free to address the mystery of Snow Man and Evil Painter, the real Hong-rang's whereabouts and Fake Hong-rang's final showdown with his captors.
