Oakland enthralled with Ballers for giving them another chance to love the game

The Oakland Ballers are more than a baseball team. More accurately, the Ballers have become ingrained in the fabric of Oakland itself. For Dennis Reichert, he's psyched that his friend's kid designed the team's logo. For Toni Rubart, she's thrilled to know that one of the ballboys is her friend's grandson. And despite a 12-game win streak being snapped as the Ballers fell to the Rocky Mountain Vibes on Wednesday afternoon, the team tops the Pioneer League, proving that teams don't need huge stadiums to involve the community in good old-fashioned baseball. 'What I think is special about the team isn't that it's a sports team,' Vice President of Communications and Fan Entertainment Casey Pratt told the Chronicle. 'It came in the wake of a pretty hardcore time where Oakland lost, you know, the Raiders, and they were losing the A's. It's a sports team, but I don't think it's a sports story. In a lot of ways, it's a community story first.' Brian Mulhern and Gary Bargman became friends 25 years ago when they worked as ushers at the Coliseum for the Oakland Athletics. Bargman was thrilled to share his memory of escorting Reggie Jackson to the owner's box at the Coliseum. For both men, good baseball is all that matters. Mulhern was diagnosed with ALS in January 2020. After losing much of his mobility, it was Oakland baseball — video of his pandemic cutout being hit by a foul ball was shown on SportsCenter — that brought him back to the ballpark. And while that picturesque moment was at the Coliseum with the A's, his disappointment with their departure hasn't soured his love for the sport. 'I'm Ballers all the way. And I'm here now, which means a lot to me because, you know, they pretty much diagnosed that I had three to five years here,' said Mulhern. 'Just being able to go out again and do stuff, I just think has invigorated me. The fact that I'm still here and able to go to a ball game. It just means a lot to me.' Nate Carroll-Browne, a fan owner via the team's unique crowdfunding program, was enjoying food and drinks at an intimate tailgate in the parking lot before Wednesday's game. Carroll-Browne volunteers with the Alameda County Homeless Action Center, and after the Athletics joined the fleet of pro sports teams departing Oakland, Raimondi Park became a pastime favorite for the nonprofit. The center brings out both volunteers and folks benefiting from the program to home games, and Carroll-Browne is the resident Ballers expert. 'I've been here since last year, going to home games, and like, it's great for the community, it's been great for the neighborhood. It's great to have a space for shared joy,' he said. 'For us just to be here together, and, you know, spend some time together, it means a lot.' The shared joy at Raimondi Park was felt throughout Wednesday's game. When Darryl Buggs hit a home run in the second inning to narrow the Ballers' deficit to 4-3, the stands roared beneath the rumbling feet of fans. Even when the Ballers gave up three runs and were down 7-3 in the bottom of the third, the 2,644 fans didn't budge from their sun-soaked seats. And as the hot dog vendor started an 'Oakland Ballers' call and response, many voices contributed to the choir. The support doesn't come as a shock to most fans. 'I've been an Oakland fan since I was born, and the Ballers are Oakland. It's rooted in Oakland,' said Mike Davis-Adams, who provides cigars to the team. 'It's the intimate level of things going on, like I'm high-fiving the players when they come in and out. … This is something I think people will get behind when they realize how this is going to stay and be a permanent fixture in the city of Oakland.' The fans thundered during the sixth inning — relentlessly rooting on Oakland as it scored six times to take an 11-7 lead. And when Rocky Mountain regained its footing in the ninth, scoring four runs to tie the game, fans remained firmly in their seats. Not until after the knockout round — when the Ballers' Cam Bufford came away from the home run derby-like tiebreaker with just one HR to the Vibes' three — did fans begin to exit Raimondi. Even with the loss, fans didn't hesitate to approach players and thank them. Many of the Oakland Town Camp youth welcomed to the park as guests were excited for the chance to meet a 'real life baseball player.' 'It starts with the fans. Every day, they show up. They support us,' Bufford told the Chronicle. 'We've been on a hot streak, but even when we're doing bad, they're behind us, supporting us.' The Ballers are more than just a local team filling the void left by the A's. 'They're a symbol that baseball is alive and well in Oakland, and you don't need a giant effing stadium,' Rubart said.

ITV forced to halt filming of Stephen Mulhern show after fire on set

Filming of Stephen Mulhern's game show You Bet! was brought to a halt due to a fire on set. The Saturday Night Takeaway and Dancing On Ice host, 48, was working on the ITV show in Yorkshire at the time, shooting a special Emmerdale segment. It's been reported that a car burst into flames, with the fire spreading to prop vans used by crew members. As a result, thousands of pounds worth of equipment went up in smoke. According to MailOnline, two fire engines were called to the scene. An eyewitness described what unfolded as 'carnage'. 'The blaze just started from a random vehicle, which then resulted in vans used by the crew also going up in flames,' they explained. 'There was obvious panic, and it's a miracle nobody was harmed.' It's said the fire started 'within close proximity to the soap,' but thankfully, it didn't spread inside where filming actually happens. Speaking after the incident, a spokesperson for You Bet! also said: 'Following an incident that was unrelated to filming, production for You Bet! was suspended as a precaution. 'The situation was promptly assessed by the fire services, and no one was injured or affected. 'The health and safety of all individuals involved in the making of the programme remains our highest priority.' Also confirming their attendance to the matter, a spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire Service explained that they were called to 'reports of a small vehicle on fire on Harewood Avenue' at 3:57pm on Friday. On the arrival of their two crews, the fires were extinguished. The cause has been recorded as accidental. Photos from the scene illustrate the extent of the damage, showing how the blaze completely destroyed what was inside the trucks. The set was located on the grounds of Harewood House in Leeds, with Mulhern there to record a challenge to appear in the upcoming series. Filming of the programme – which is a revival of the original format, which first aired in 1988 – will continue this week. In August 2024, ITV announced that Mulhern and Holly Willoughby would front two special episodes of You Bet!, in which a celebrity panel bets on the ability of members of the public to accomplish typically unlikely challenges and stunts. It was later revealed that Catchphrase host Mulhern would host the next full series solo, with Willoughby having quit in March. The reboot will comprise seven episodes and a Christmas special, but, in a twist to the format, each will be filmed in different locations across the country. An ITV spokesman said previously about the switch-up: 'Free from the restrictions of the studio, our epic challenges are about to get a whole lot bigger. 'Watching on, our celebrity panel's job is simple; they must decide if each challenger will succeed – yes or no. If they guess correctly, they'll be awarded points. 'The Celebrity with the most points at the end of the show will receive £5,000 for their chosen charity.' You Bet! will be aptly renamed You Bet! On Tour for the upcoming series, and bosses are hoping Willoughby will be up for returning at some point as a guest panellist. Other famous panel members will include Zoe Ball, Rob Beckett, Alex Brooker, Rylan Clark, Alesha Dixon, Alison Hammond, and Danny Jones. More Trending Speaking ahead of its release, Mulhern – who recently left his lucrative role at Butlin's – expressed his excitement: 'I'm absolutely thrilled that YouBet! is back – and this time we're hitting the road! 'Each week, I'll be joined by a top celeb panel as our challengers take on some brilliantly bonkers and amazing challenges. 'With the title of You Bet Champion on the line, it's going to be unbelievable from the start.' View More » You Bet! was originally hosted by Sir Bruce Forsyth from 1988 to 90, before Matthew Kelly took over from 1991 to 1995. Darren Day then hosted from 1996 to 1997. Got a story? Dublin City Council built fewer than half the homes it was meant to over past three years

For those years, 2,341 homes were delivered in the local authority area, equating to 49 per cent of the target of 4,800. The figures come from an update given to councillors by Mick Mulhern, DCC's head of housing, at yesterday's housing committee meeting, during which he conceded the recent performance of the authority on delivering homes had been 'not great'. Broken down by year, 613 homes were built in 2022, 759 in 2023 and 969 in 2024, well short of the 895, 1,931 and 1,974 respective targets set by the Department of Housing. For 2025 so far, 235 homes have been delivered in the DCC area. "The slow start in 22, 23 and 24 were due to a variety of reasons around resourcing and capacity in the sector … but I think the ship is moving, and I think we will exceed our 25 and 26 targets,' Mr Mulhern said. Department of Housing targets for 2025 and 2026 are 2,122 and 2,165 homes respectively built. In the council's own Housing Delivery Action Plan 2022-2026, the authority committed to 2,588 homes to be built this year, and 2,355 next year. Over the lifetime of the plan, DCC said 8,939 homes would be built, of which 2,576, or 29 per cent, have been completed. Mr Mulhern said that out to 2030, there is a potential capacity of 14,000 homes in the DCC area, with that rising to 16,000 by 2032. Councillors were disappointed with DCC's failure to meet housing targets, with Sinn Féin's Daithí Doolan saying the proportion of houses in the report directly built by DCC was 'quite alarming'. "Dublin City Council delivering 14 per cent of housing in Dublin, to see it in percentages shows how far back we have become, as opposed to the '60s and '70s when Dublin City Council were the driving force, the majority in delivering units,' Mr Doolan said. "I would like to see us return to that day when Dublin City Council is the lead developer. From my understanding, it's more effective, it's more efficient. There's more democratic control and the outcome is better.' Independent councillor Christy Burke decried the number of three-bedroom homes being built in Dublin city. "If you get one, it's like winning the lottery,' he said. "It's heartbreaking when you have families who are probably seven and eight years now number one and two and three on the [housing] list, waiting on three-beds, and there is not a move going to happen'.
